Man.  How to soften a crusty man.  Take his first pup away from him.  Had to put this guy to rest tonight.   13 great years.  Great dog.  Tough day.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Who was the coach that roamed our sidelines with the big wad of gum?

Danny Smith. Special teams coach.

Yep.  Redskins and Steelers as well.  Always annoyed me.  Like the Pete Carroll annoyance.

I believe our special teams sucked under him too.

Better memory than mine.   That was a long time ago.  I do think he was the ST coach just before Andy and (Harbaugh).

Yes, he was here under Rhodes. Harbaugh eventually replaced Smith.

I have a feeling the NFL is going to do everything in its power to make the Super Bowl dreadful to watch with all this extra stuff.

Because you are 100% right, the only solution that works is...don't turn it on until kickoff.

lol no you were implying he took a lessor job , you also implied College ranks pay better. You tell us why would he make that move if this were true?

Unless of course you cant logically explain your position.

been doin that for the games all year, not one pre game or post game show watched, most times dont even watch the halftime shows.

And to be honest, i have almost zero interest on watching this superbowl.

Jeffery wasn’t an aging player when extended. Extended to 31 was a bit of a risk but not huge.  Conversion with guaranteed salary was a huge error.   Brooks and Lane are not old for OL.  Arguably Howie was trying to lock in Brooks and Lane for their final years.  A risk but not huge.  What age do you cut off retaining OL? Other positions?  Now Jackson, that was a huge risk.  I do think for a lot of positions, Howie needs to reevaluate 30.

but he was already an injury concern. It was a concern from Chicago, and he did get hurt in 2017, he just played through it. We knew he was often injured and getting older when we resigned him.

I want to see the game, but the pre/post game silliness isn't for me.  Actually, glad that the Eagles aren't there this year so I can stay away.

Interesting that the Texans were hell-bent on hiring a black head coach and still passed over Bieniemy.

kinda makes one think it isnt about his skin color huh?

I think with the increased speed of the game, you have to lower the age at "speed" positions, and start signing guys to one year deals as patches. All the WR yardage leaders were 28 or younger, and I think you'd probably find a similar peak on the CB side (safeties can compensate with instincts). Same with speed rushers on the defense. Older WRs tend to be more role players these days.

On the other hand Whitworth was playing at a high level at 34-36 and started every game until 38.  Peters played at a high level through 34, and still started 16 games at 36.

So it's not unreasonable to expect Brooks to be a top guard into his early 30s, same with Lane.

Cox is no longer a dominant pass rusher and is overpaid, but will be a solid DT for a few more years.

I think one trick will be to let your players walk rather than give them big money extensions past their expected expiration date, then take the money and sign either younger veterans entering their peak years or older veterans to 2-3 year deals at a big discount. What you don't want to do is extend someone at 29-30 at a rate based on their past performance.

So we base signings on the outliers at the OL position?

Brooks had a ruptured Achilles, and had 2 years left on his current deal, TWO.  Howie had to kick the can a little and used Brooks as a tool for that, and gave him the biggest money ever to an OG.  He didnt just resign him, he gave him a HUGE raise, backloaded of course, as is his custom.

Johnson also had 2 years left, and just a few weeks after signing the contract required ankle surgery, which didnt go properly and now requires another one, more extensive than the last.  And gave him HUGE money on top.

The issue isnt so much that he signed them to extensions, its the timing of it (early) and the size of it (biggest contracts for an OG and an OT) at the time.

But maybe he wouldn't have had to use their contracts to kick the can down the road, if he hadn't overpaid for Desean and Alshon as well.  But, he had to do such stupid things, to cover for his other mistakes... like not being able to draft a WR, so he signed old, bad ones to big money... then he had no money to over-invest at DT to sign the likes of Hargrave, so he needed to free up money and took a risk on injured OL.

Howie's mistakes aren't moves in a vacuum, but each one is compounding a previous error.  And now we are to believe that Howie is the guy to dig the team out of the quagmire?

Oh, wait, I forgot... he's not responsible for these things.   This is all on Doug and Schwartz.  Howie is just a consensus builder, who points at those he has surrounded himself with to advise him.  And now Howie has new blood to blame when he screws up.  Howie truly is a genius, but not as it pertains to football, but with self-preservation.

Also of note: Howie hired Joe Douglas, Jim Schwartz and Andy Weidl, and he and Lurie forced Scangarello on Doug.

So he’s a consensus builder but has hired a group of people who help pick wrong players. It’s truly amazing he keeps getting away with this.

Since he’s always right, let’s hope Howie stops drafting from consensus and starts drafting his guys.

I don’t know squat about draft prospects, but I would love to see Philly pick this young man in the 3rd or 4th round.

Good friends son...been watching him since middle school. Great kid, hard worker, and seemed to do pretty well protecting Trasks blind side.

Wow, I was actually going to end my post with that and say right???

I had a coach that used to say the same thing. He was an o line coach, I didn't okay I line but I remember him telling the o lineman how to hold without getting caught

Yet I don't remember the league ever fining taking away draft picks or suspending a team or player for holding, the ref just throws a flag.

So in  your estimation brady isn't a cheater he's just tries Really hard?

I'll give you that ,Tom Brady is the GOAT at cheating...😒

Tom Brady did/does cheat. But one thing that I have come to realize since he went to the bucs, Brady w/o Belicheat and cheating > Belicheat and cheating w/o Brady

Well if he's bettcher, we bettcher get him then

I wonder if bringing McCown with him is basically like having him as the HC-in-waiting.

I dont understand the hire.  Then again I didn't understand the Pederson hire either.

Think I'd rather have Josh McCown as HC than Culley....and I dont think much of McCown as a coach.

McCown isn't black. I have no idea if Bienimey  is just terrible or what

Operation get every african american coach in Houston to try to keep deshaun

Yup, still won't work. Making it this obvious will only make things worse.

Unless these are all Deshuan's people he wanted.

So, now teams get 2 3rd round picks when they hire a "minority" HC?

Wow.
