If he stammers in front of the team, spouting nonsense, then it matters... if he stammers in front of the press, who cares?

The proof is in the pudding.

Dude, all I have to go by right now is the first press conference. As I said we'll see, but the first impression by me (my opinion only) aint good. As always I'll certainly be glad to be wrong.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

He is a problem, but he's also a talented one. They have to make a choice. If they want to go with Wentz then they have to clear the table and put him in a situation to succeed and go all in. If they aren't willing to make that investment knowing his mental blocks, then Wentz (or both) should be moved, and they draft a new one at 6.

Bottom line is he has mental blocks. You can't try to rehabilitate him looking over his shoulder. Make a choice and go with it.

Yea I’m not buying the mental block arguments anymore. There was no threat in 2019 and yet he struggled for much of that season as well. And I just can’t believe Carson would feel threatened by a 2nd round rookie QB - it made way more sense in the context of having the Super Bowl MVP as your backup. Carson is a high level to elite talent that should only feel threatened by someone of that pedigree (unless he thinks he’s not good enough).

Performances over press conferences are ridiculous. I remember the niners media were gushing over when they hired Chip. He seemed like a real coach as compared to Tomsula who sounded like a knucklehead in his first pc. Chip then went 2-14 and got canned after a year.

I want my coach to coach.  Don't care if he talks eloquently to the media or not.

I don't think it was so much his "performance" that concerns people, but his demeanor brings concerns that when there's a strong belief by many he got the job because Howie and Lurie could control him and then he's up there bumbling and stumbling and dodges questions, it gave off "pushover hire" vibes. Now whether or not he actually is that remains to be seen, but I can see why fans were concerned about that especially when they already were concerned before the press conference. He didn't say or give off any vibes to squash those concerns basically.

Ok. We'll see, but have you ever given public speeches? First one isn't always smooth giving a prepared statement. It's a skill to be able to read and speak without stuttering and fumbling at times...along with controlling the nerves, which even Seinfeld says he still has. That's a lot different than talking to the team off the cuff about something he is an expert on.

Where are you people getting that Carson struggled throughout much of the 2019 season? His stats were very good in 2019 and if you say the "eyeball test" I'm gonna scream

Don't think we'd know it unless it was reported

He's already being mocked for this clip. Yeah, he sounded very awkward, but I'll defend him somewhat in this clip has no bearing on whether or not he can coach, and people are already using it to push their "You hired THIS GUY over Bieniemy???" agenda.

Don't have an agenda but I did want Bieniemy over this guy

Doug benched him for a C+ rookie prospect...Not the Eagles.  I guess that is an important distinction now.

I don’t really believe that was Doug’s call only.

My Girl says to stop being so judgmental over one press conference and give the guy a break. I’ll listen cause she’s cute....

Yes, so? My first impression of him is not favorable. Cripes people, I know I can be wrong.

And I said OK we'll see, but I guarantee your first one didn't sound perfectly smooth. It's a skill he probably hasn't had a lot of exposure to. Doesn't mean you won't be right, but that doesn't translate to how he will be as a coach. Doesn't mean he lacks command, confidence, or direction. It means he's not a good public speaker in his first prepared statement.

I think it's perfectly normal for a coach who's only coached for 2 midwestern teams and 1 team that doesn't have fans to be nervous at his first Eagles press conference.

I just heard this guy talk and I legit hate Howie and Lurie.

I think its weird they made him stand at a podium in an empty auditorium. Just have him sit at his desk.

Which is why I have hopes for the future with Fipp getting blown out of town.    Sadly, not all the rats in this ship have been cleared out.

And I remind folks, I like Greg Ward, the person.   I just can't stand watching him on the field as the most prolific WR on this team, and the primary punt returner.  He just stands as the symbol for all things that have gone wrong with this team... he's the offensive/ST version of Nate Gerry on the defense.

The Eagles barely blocked on returns after the LOS.  I think they analyzed returns and the likelihood of a return without it being called back plus loss of yardage for blocking penalties and concluded that 95% of the time the best result is less blocking and fair catches. I think they probably analyzed the percentages for letting the ball hit the turf outside the hash marks and also at a certain distance from the goal line.  Blame Howie and the analytics department because the Eagles average starting field position this year was atrocious.

It's also possible he was nervous not because it was his first presser and he's new here, but because Howie and Lurie told him so many things to not say, being the control freaks they've become, that he didn't want to accidentally say anything that would piss off his bosses.

I wouldn't be shocked. That's the environment those bozos have created here and in part, why this wasn't the first choice of any of the candidates.

And spring for a teleprompter. You can tell he was losing his place and getting even more nervous about it.

Didn't he say it was his decision though?

I didn't watch the whole thing myself, but from what I gather on social media/radio/etc is that it was more of a vibe thing, he came off nervous, and him saying he didn't watch tape on any of the players. Which has people question why he was so impressive in the interview if he couldn't give breakdowns on their roster since he hasn't seen any of them play.

I think the fear was already there by the fans that he was hired to be a "puppet" and when they see a nervous stumbling guy speaking it feeds into that narrative.

I watched the whole thing.  He was nervous and did a bad job giving the speech.  He was looking at his notes the whole time. I have seen lots of good attorneys get tripped up on their words in court and in oral arguments.  That said, I think he did make some good points that weren't about biting knees.

I am sure they vetted his speech.  I think it's fair to believe they added some points for him to make.

What did you just say about D'Wayne Eskridge?

Probably going too high. We can get a very good slot this year probably into day three.  BPA always but defense has a higher weight in BPA this year, IMHO.

Honestly, out of everything, the thing I feel best about is that Lowie appeared to have allowed Sirianni to hire the staff he most wanted. Maybe they realized they meddled with Doug too much in that regard. Also think Sirianni gave them more confidence than Doug ever did he could assemble a strong staff

Had the exact same thought.

When you see clips of Sirianni speaking to people 1 on 1, or teaching players on the field, he communicates fine.

If anything, this makes me like him more.

How people forget Doug’s first presser where he came up with the lame excuse about why they took so long on a drive to not want to give Brady the ball back when they were down by two scores.
