Very obvious you have an agenda if you're killing Sirianni after today

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

So I disappear for a few weeks and the whole complexion of the team changes.

I do agree that there was definitely a consensus of what the messaging would be, i.e. "what is the response regarding Wentz?".

Most of the other stuff was benign and effectively laid out the framework from which Nick will be coaching.

Did anyone see Tyrone Johnson's tweets about Sirianni saying that he lied today over the QB questions and went onto question his character as a result. This is what the landscape of Philly sports media is in 2021. Complete and total stupidity. This guy is such a clown, and spends the vast majority of his time on twitter bashing fans and talking to them like they have an IQ of 50, while he invented sports. Maybe 97.5 should take a serious look at themselves and realize why WIP crushes them in the ratings. That entire show they have from 2-6 is a joke. You have a has been living off of a name, a loser like this, and a female who fits the stereotype of women in sports media who have no clue about sports.

I think they tried to keep it traditional because he could have just done the PC in his new office

God I cringe listening to Sirianni

I think we can say with certainty that the Eagles didn't start the coaching search looking to hire Nick Sirianni. The whole rumour was that that they wanted McDaniels from the jump.

I think they wanted Riley from the jump.

Who is Tyrone Johnson?

I can see why Eagles interviews are so long. Lurie comes across as the neighbour you avoid because saying hello, how are you = 30 mins of rambling about the weather, their shopping trip  and what the neighbours did last week.  As for Sirianni, you could hear his ass cheeks puckering in that presser; there is no life experience that prepares you for that, especially in a bigger market where the media will go hard straight away and you can't see anyone's faces.  I could see him thinking, don't eff this up.

I did find it strange calling out the players from the Colts/Chargers, but it's hardly a crisis

He's Mike Missanelli's minion on 97.5's show from 2-6 and also hosts Sixers Outsiders on NBCSN.

That's how you get the Eagles job. Whoever can politely nod and fake laugh there way through 10 hours.

I wonder if Tyrone ever questions Mike Missanelli's character?  He's a complete short fuse nut job.  If you ever send him an email criticizing something he said on the radio he will flip out and start emailing you to come fight him.  No wonder he punched his producer.

Lots of great coaches are cringeworthy in PCs.

Chip was probably better in a PC than any coach we’ve had going back to Vermiel.

When they are cringeworthy, they are either an idiot or they are force feeding you BS.  Hopefully it’s just the later.

Most of those signings weren't cheap, Jerrigan, McLeod, Brooks, Bradham, Jenkins, Jeffrey, all cost real money on multi-year deals. Only Blount and Smith were cheap one year deals, and they struggled to replace them. They did catch lightning in a bottle, but that team had at best a 3 year shelf life, which we've seen.

I agree, that team had a shelf life.  They needed to find creative ways to bring in younger players to replace the older ones... that's how it works in the NFL.  EVERY TEAM has a shelf life (NFL = Not For Long), so even while you are building the current roster, you always need an eye on the roster for next year, and the year after.  But, Howie (and likely Lurie too) decided to be STUPID about how they did that.  And they created this mess.  And frankly, I don't trust either one of them to figure out how to fix it again.  Frankly, they lucked into that Super Bowl - considering to replace Pederson after 2016, replace Reich, etc.   Remove them and there's no parade.  You can take that to the bank.

But, facts are slippery things... seems you aren't able to grasp them.   Let's look back at the facts on the players you mentioned.

Jerrigan was acquired for a flip of 3rd round picks, on a rookie deal.  They watched him for a while, then got him signed to an extension... And he wasn't 'old', nor injured when he was re-signed.  That was a low risk decision, but turned out bad - that happens.   That was not bad process, but it was also before the Super Bowl.  That move is not like what they've done since. And, frankly, even when it turned out poorly, it didn't cost much... 3 years total here for a total of $10M.

Brooks - when signed wasn't old, and also wasn't given a contract at the top of the market for all OGs in the entire league.  The resign at the end of the 2019 season, after he had one Achilles tear, and still had a full 2 years left on his current deal, that made him the highest paid OG in the NFL (by no small margin) was after the Super Bowl.

Bradham wasn't old, nor was he given a 'big money' deal to sign here.  $3.5M per year on the cap.

Jenkins was a moderate signing when he was brought in, and was a cheaper option than the two big name Safeties - Jarius Byrd and TJ Ward.  That was a 3 year deal for $16.5M.  Resigning him after 2016, wasn't too a huge money deal either... the last column is the cap number... Roughly $6M per year,  just 2017-2019 was 'only' $7.6M per year.

1000240962_ScreenShot2021-01-29at5_44_52PM.png.596a65cafcda8983afc825eddf679790.png

Jeffery cost only $10.8M for 2017 - many expected he'd get much more.  The market wasn't there, so Howie got him for a 'bargain' (relatively), but no commitment.  1 year, nothing dead.  The resigning happened (wait for it) after the Super Bowl.  And the cost skyrocketed.  The only reason that the numbers aren't as bad as they could be... and the Eagles were on the hook for $15M for 2020 and had to keep him because it would have cost them about $25M to get out of that contract before ... is because they restructured again.  BUT, then they are still on the hook for next year. We'll see what the final cost is for 2021 while he's gone... Looks like about $13M for nothing... we'll see what it really costs.

McLeod was 26 when he was brought in... and made roughly $7M/year.  The resign... after the Super Bowl.  And frankly, the numbers weren't terrible, but guaranteed, which makes them inflexible.

You mentioned Blount and Smith... Nice little acknowledgement.  Now, should we mention the two players that made the play of the game in the NFCCG that turned the tide... Chris Long - 2 years, $6M total.  Patrick Robinson - 1 year, $775k.    Jay Ajayi - 4th round pick with TWO years of control, on a rookie contract and immediate impact - because he fit (unlike the 3rd for an older Golden Tate... making much more money and an uncertain fit).

NONE of those moves before the Super Bowl, match the big money given to Brooks after the Super Bowl, and after his Achilles injury, at age 29 (where the majority of the cost happens when he's over 30) while he had 2 years left on his current deal, and would have become a UFA at 31, and likely could have been resigned (if they so chose) to a cheaper, less inflexible deal... to Johnson after the Super Bowl at age 29, while needing ankle surgery in the offseason.... and just like with Brooks, had 2 full years left on his contract.  Traded for Desean Jackson, a 32 year old WR, who even you admit, was going to miss games.  The price given to Jackson was the same exact price as Robby Anderson, 5 years younger, less injury prone, and wouldn't have tied the Eagles to some more dead money next year once he's gone (~$5M).  Traded for a 29 year old CB (3rd and 5th round picks) and then gave him a market value contract.  I remember a time that our GM didn't sign guys nearing or over the magic '30' mark.  Granted, it was a harsh practice, it generally hurt in the short term (mostly emotionally, rather than schematically), but kept the team flexible with the cap moving forward. Brandon Graham was pretty sure he was gone after 2018... and likely should have been (and I'm as big a Brandon Graham fan as there is), but he came back before hitting the free agent market.  Why?  Simply because he was given an offer he couldn't refuse... Howie paid him TOO MUCH.  3 years, $40M, but it really is likely the 2 year, $27M... Now, of all these guys, Graham is the only one that that investment actually paid off.  The rest have also been bad risks, and the rest have failed.

A player's best years are normally in the 25-29 year old bracket... with some exceptions that push those boundaries, and some positional differences... but sticking to having players in that age bracket getting the big money, usually means that you are getting what you are paying for.  When the payments go to players on the plus side of that age bracket usually means you are paying for PAST performance, not current play.

Missanelli is a loser and his schtick has been old for quite some time. I have nothing against Gargano but he is another guy whose schtick is so old and played out. You'd think 97.5 would realize why WIP smokes them in the ratings all of the time. I do like their new morning show though, and I would never listen to that junk WIP puts on in the morning. They are so much better from 10-2 and 2-6 though.

I won't argue that "best years" may be before 30, but 30 is no longer the cliff it was say 15-20 years ago.  There are plenty of pro bowl-level non-QBs in their 30's.

Yes, its more of a gamble to pay top dollar for a 30+ player, but its no longer the rule not to.

Shannon can be such a clown. I get he wants change but embarrassing someone like this isn’t the way to go about it.

Talking one on one, or even one on two or three - face to face, being open and honest about football, is very different from facing the press, and keeping your cards close to the vest because you don't want to divulge things that might hurt bargaining positions later.

Just a silly #hottake... not surprising, but disappointing.

I agree... but when you put all your big money into players in that 30+ category, its not a good thing.

Cox, Brooks, Johnson, Jackson, Jackson, Jeffery, Graham...

I can't believe I forgot to include Malik Jackson on that previous post... that's the exact opposite of the pre-2017 Chris Long move.

Now you have Hurts and ??? Gonna draft Fields with #6?  Rather just go with Wentz.

lets say i am not trading wentz (a franchise qb who had 1 bad year on a very bad team) at all, but if i was going to, id need at least 2 - 1sts. a 2nd and a 3rd

because franchise qbs are not easy to find and its even harder to win without one.

I’m done with the QB fighting, I’ll let Siri handle it and what he decides I’ll let ride for the year. I’m giving Siri a free pass for two years as well cause he is inheriting a bad situation across the board.

They should put Gargano back with the morning show.  That was one timeslot where his over the top persona actually fit with the morning zoo crap sports radio stations try to do.

There are a lot of QB-needy teams in the NFL right now; you could argue more than 10.

Wentz is 28 years old and anyone interested in trading for him would be operating on the premise of acquiring a starting QB for the next 10 years.

The adequate return in a trade would be a 1st and 3rd in 2021, plus a 2nd in 2022 — at a minimum
