I agree... but when you put all your big money into players in that 30+ category, its not a good thing.

Cox, Brooks, Johnson, Jackson, Jackson, Jeffery, Graham...

I can't believe I forgot to include Malik Jackson on that previous post... that's the exact opposite of the pre-2017 Chris Long move.

We’re switching strategy now and putting all our stock into coaches who are 30.

Is there any coach besides Stout confirmed over 40? Lol

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Jason Michael (TE) is 42

I was really indifferent about the coaching hire before today but now I’m rooting for Sirianni even more after today’s presser, I saw a younger guy that was just nervous, it’s a shame most of the comments I saw were trashing him, I really hope he becomes a successful head coach in this town now

I won't argue that "best years" may be before 30, but 30 is no longer the cliff it was say 15-20 years ago.  There are plenty of pro bowl-level non-QBs in their 30's.

Yes, its more of a gamble to pay top dollar for a 30+ player, but its no longer the rule not to.

I think it depends on the position, QBs to late 30s, OL to early to mid 30s, WRs to late 20s, CBs to 30 or so, LBs/RBs buyer beware, speed rushers late 20s, physical DTs early 30s, safeties, early 30s.

I suspect Howie has revised his age curves after the last few years.

There's no argument that they gambled and lost, but Howie also handed Chip a solid core and rebuilt the team after Chip tore it down and won a SB.

There are only a handful of teams that draft well above average, and those GMs aren't moving, what you get are their assistants, i.e. Douglas.

Howie may have screwed up trying to keep the window open, but they did get back to the playoffs twice, and only delayed the rebuild by one year.

The idea that you can bring in young players to an aging team, well, maybe enough to go 7-9 instead of 4-11-1, but if your best players are 30 and over, it takes more than a couple acquisitions to make a difference - and sometimes the timing is wrong, DeSean was signed a year before Anderson, who was a UDFA who did little with the Jets to anoint him your #1. So the assumption that anyone could make all the perfect moves in hindsight is fan vision. GMs in every sport talk all the time, often the reason they don't make an obvious trade is the other team didn't want to trade at a reasonable cost, and when the other team is ready, they found another suitor instead of letting you know the price dropped.

So I disappear for a few weeks and the whole complexion of the team changes.

We brought in top men

Finally saw that tidbit of the press conference. Thank God for 2017

I really don’t like that the HC was nervous doing a Zoom press conference...

He maxed out his coaching stats and something had to take a hit. He chose public speaking.

He will be fine. Nobody will care about this in a week or two except maybe a few talking heads. By the draft it will be a complete afterthought. It's really not worth getting hung up over.

Are you kidding? This is the blog with some real knuckleheads in here...with a lull in the offseason, this will get shredded, redefined and beat to death..."functional public speaking" anyone....the sports talk radio simpletons are already chewing at it...not long til the madden guys jump in...man...this is going to be a long offseason

Talk radio can skewer Nick all they want, in the end, "you win or you die."

It may also extend into the season.

Well after the SB personnel moves will start to be made, players will be released etc, then the start of the new league year and free agency with the draft around the corner. By then I doubt anyone is going to care about this press conference. I hope you're wrong but you could always be right. Around here who knows. I'd like to think that the next time we hear from him he'll have a bit more composure. It shouldn't be as big of a deal though.

I've never seen a bigger overreaction to someone stumbling over their words in a press conference in my life.

people criticized Dougs introductory press conference too. then he won a super bowl.

idiots.

You want to play that game?   What had Desean done over the previous 3 years to make anyone anoint him anything?

Desean could have been traded for... as he was for a 6th round pick, and played on the contract he had.  At which time they could have moved on from him with no issue... So, the timing had nothing to do with it, and had to do with the contract that was given to Desean... which was just a stupid move.  It was stupid to give him a new contract for big money then, and its even dumber in hindsight.

They should put Gargano back with the morning show.  That was one timeslot where his over the top persona actually fit with the morning zoo crap sports radio stations try to do.

I agree. I liked him on the morning show. Didn't like Farzeta at all. Kincaid is just ok but I like the rest of the guys. Gargano can't carry a 10-2 show where it's him talking sports and talking calls solo. He needs multiple personalities to play off of his cuz schtick otherwise it just falls flat. Him and Myrtetus together was god awful.

Sure you did... about 5 years ago.

I agree, that team had a shelf life.  They needed to find creative ways to bring in younger players to replace the older ones... that's how it works in the NFL.  EVERY TEAM has a shelf life (NFL = Not For Long), so even while you are building the current roster, you always need an eye on the roster for next year, and the year after.

A player's best years are normally in the 25-29 year old bracket... with some exceptions that push those boundaries, and some positional differences... but sticking to having players in that age bracket getting the big money, usually means that you are getting what you are paying for.  When the payments go to players on the plus side of that age bracket usually means you are paying for PAST performance, not current play.

I don’t think anybody disagrees with the facts you presented.  I think a number of things were in play that cannot be denied.

Jeff Lurie wanted to try to catch lightning in a bottle and viewed that as keeping the band together so they broke their own rules and did some extensions that in hindsight hurt the team in the long run.  Couple that with the rising use of guaranteed money on star contracts and the problem multiplied.  Now they are paying the price of that gamble.  The good news is I think they started seeing the errors of their ways last year.  Hargrave’s contract is pricey but the conditions aren’t.as rough and Slay is actually on the cheaper side of a contract that is really more of a series of one year contracts.

Now, for a team that seems to put a lot of value in analytics, the Eagles front office seems oblivious on Howie’s side of the group.  Analytics would have told them the Alshon contract was a mistake, would have told them the DJax trade was a mistake, that the Tate trade was ill advised, that Reagor over Jefferson was a bad bet, etc.

Pretty good vouch for character and abilities when the team’s best player on defense goes to bat for the former OC

That's my biggest concern... they play the analytics where it doesn't make sense... a bad offense going for a 4th down conversion will have about as much success as they did on 3rd down.  But ignored it where it was obvious... old players and big money.
