I learned something today I should have learned years ago. Twitter is a cesspool for miserable negative people who do nothing but trash everyone and everything else.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

I don’t think anybody disagrees with the facts you presented.  I think a number of things were in play that cannot be denied.

Jeff Lurie wanted to try to catch lightning in a bottle and viewed that as keeping the band together so they broke their own rules and did some extensions that in hindsight hurt the team in the long run.  Couple that with the rising use of guaranteed money on star contracts and the problem multiplied.  Now they are paying the price of that gamble.  The good news is I think they started seeing the errors of their ways last year.  Hargrave’s contract is pricey but the conditions aren’t.as rough and Slay is actually on the cheaper side of a contract that is really more of a series of one year contracts.

Now, for a team that seems to put a lot of value in analytics, the Eagles front office seems oblivious on Howie’s side of the group.  Analytics would have told them the Alshon contract was a mistake, would have told them the DJax trade was a mistake, that the Tate trade was ill advised, that Reagor over Jefferson was a bad bet, etc.

I think one of the reasons Howie broke his own rules was the realization that the team would be broken up after 2019 no matter what they did, and that a rising cap meant he could clear out most of the salaries by the end of 2020 and the rest by 2021. Then COVID hit and it became obvious they were in a worse hole, so while he didn't do any extensions, Slay and Hargrave were basically doubling down because they knew there would be at least 2 years of wandering the wilderness after 2020 with a flat cap, so might as well roll the dice and hope for lightning to strike twice.

And if Dillard and Brooks are healthy, and DeSean plays half a year, and is back for the playoffs, you go 8-8 or 9-7, win the division, have everyone back for the playoffs and maybe get hot. Imagine this team with Wentz playing like the end of 2019, a great OL, Sanders, DeSean, Jeffrey, Reagor, Ertz, Goedert going into the first playoff game, they'd have had a better shot than the WFT. Was that a long shot? Sure, but not a 100-1 long shot, more like a 3-1 long shot in April, with little downside because they weren't going to be able to trade people with the cap flat and they couldn't afford to cut them this season in any case. And that explains Hurts as well, he couldn't carry the team long-term but his style of play might allow you to steal a game or two if Wentz went down in the short-run. If the Eagles went 9-7 and got to the conference final, what would have been the conversation in here?

This would explain why Lurie doesn't blame Howie, Howie probably laid out the options and risks to Lurie in both 2019 and this offseason, and Lurie choose to gamble. So he figures it was his fault and Howie was just carrying out his wishes.

I also suspect Lurie and Howie got together, admitted they gambled and lost and decided it was time to rebuild, and when they didn't get the right answers from Doug, they decided to move on. I don't think they targeted anyone this offseason, the media sees coaching hires as musical chairs where the winners are the first teams that get the hot candidates and the other teams hire the dregs. After seeing their top candidates in 2016 fall flat on their faces, Lowie probably decided to cast a wide net and instead of looking for the "hot" candidate to please reporters, wanted to find the next AR. Notice the Sirianni interview went longer than any of the ones before him, they must of liked what they heard and wanted to hear more.

Doesn't mean Siri was the right choice, we won't know for three years, but it's likely he was the candidate they liked the most.

I feel like I’m missing something because his press conference wasn’t some train wreck. He stumbled a few times, who cares. Zach Berman can’t do a podcast without tripping over words. Our current *redacted. Take it to CVON* stumbles some times. Who cares.

I’d rather see @Shocker54 do a press conference

He was much better in the Q&A session than with his opening remarks, which were a tough watch.

Only because Ertz turned down their extension offer...

I agree. I liked him on the morning show. Didn't like Farzeta at all. Kincaid is just ok but I like the rest of the guys. Gargano can't carry a 10-2 show where it's him talking sports and talking calls solo. He needs multiple personalities to play off of his cuz schtick otherwise it just falls flat. Him and Myrtetus together was god awful.

I actually liked Myrtetus with Harry Mayes. Kincaid goes on these tangents that have nothing to do with sports and yeah Gargano I can only take so much of. Mikey Miss is ok when he just sticks to sports but then he goes on these SJW tirades because for some reason, he has to tell everyone how enlightened he is and how wrong you are for not agreeing with him.

Those two were good together. Gargano and Myrtetus together was a terrible mix. Kincaid is just ok to me. Don't love him or hate him. I get what you are saying though, he talks way too much about stupid crap like shampoo, traffic, game shows, etc. Typical morning show radio personality trying too hard to talk about stuff other than sports. I just like the other three guys in the morning and Farzeta got on my nerves so bad. Mikey Miss seems like an elitist liberal which are the type of people I can't stand being a left wing populist. Him and his two minions both act like they are smarter and better than everyone else and it drives me nuts. I barely ever listen to them for that reason.

Their opinions don’t count.... Unless they wanna get traded to the Eagles then I’ll listen!!!!!

So Sirianni repeats things.  Watch what he repeats.  The message he wants to drive home.  I am not a teacher, look to @Iggles_Phan and @Desertbirds for that, but I was responsible for my focus area and division for helping develop training and often times delivering it.   We had a large, worldwide training department.  They would do the grunt work but we delivered the training.  One thing that the trainers stressed is that folks really need to be exposed to something seven times for it to stick.   One trick is the emphasis repeat.  That’s what I heard from Sirianni today.   Smart.  Simple to learn, difficult for the opposition.   That sort of thing.

So we hired a coach that teaches?  What a novel idea.  Watch that five minute segment with Johnson.  In that five minute segment, you get the arm placement when throwing of both the throwing arm and the other arm about five times.  Picture in the background, statement about where, while speaking showing, explanation with continued showing. Negatives if not doing and positives from doing.  Anyone walk away from that video and not know what Johnson was stressing about arm placement?  So Sirianni isn’t just a teacher but he is hiring teachers.  Coaches are teachers.

Now coaches also have to be planners and call plays like playing chess or bridge or Risk or Pente.  We did not see that from Sirianni today.  But why would we? General presentation on overall philosophy and then the dumbest group of questions from reporters since Doug’s introductory press conference.

I think this group has a chance to succeed.

Not me of course 🙂

I think whether they win or lose under Sirianni, his staff will develop players better than Doug.

And that means three years from now he'll either win with the guys he develops or leaves a talented team for his successor.

Which is why he's the right choice for a rebuild, the question then becomes in three years is he the right coach to win once the rebuilding is over.

Twitter has been hilarious today 😂

Didn't we also just go through an entire election process where the current President was constantly stuttering and we were told stuttering is OK and not a big deal too?  So much that there was an article about a stuttering boy who wrote to him?  My goodness I just hate any media personality anymore.

Guessing you all would have been more impressed if he dropped a few curse words and talked about biting knee caps instead? If this press conference moves the needle for you at all I don't know what to tell ya

Too many serious people. It’s a joke. People are laughing at it. No big deal.

Meh, I got no problem with the memes and jokes (the tweet you posted was pretty funny).  But there are absolutely people taking it seriously, and trying to read into a press conference is just silly. For better or worse.

I guess. I haven’t seen em in the blog though. I say this anyone who is calling for his job after one press conference is crazy.

You don't agree that Lowie came in and overrode Doug and his decision on coaching decisions?  It happened last year and was part of the reason why Doug was let go a week after the season ended.  That is pretty much common knowledge.

So Howie should be able to tell Doug to fire Groh....but Doug was the reason we drafted Hurts?  And you tell me to make up my mind?!

No, You have it backwards.. Howie shouldn't be telling Doug which coaches to keep or fire - I said a coach should sink or swim with his guys ... I wasn't saying I didn't believe Howie interfered, I was saying it was wrong. Advise, sure. But ultimately the coaches should be the HC decision.

I don't believe the bit about game day actives.

Just so we're on the same page here, Howie is responsible for all draft picks. I'm not trying to work around that or point the finger someplace else. BUT, I'm convinced that Doug wanted Hurts. I don't believe Howie masterminds that pick. Thats the situation were the GM needs to tell the coach "NO".

I don’t know what’s worse people being bothered by his PC or people feeling the need to defend him like he’s a helpless child

There’s an easy middle ground here. People who say his PC wasn’t the greatest but will wait to make judgments on him as a head coach until he actually coaches.
