You're missing the most obvious team here my friend.  Would it surprise you at all if this brass thought that Hurts could be a franchise QB?

Oh i definitely would bet they believe that. They stated they didn’t want to potentially lose out on him like they did with Wilson. Id bet a ton of money they believe he is.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

You're confusing "franchise QB" with "Elite Franchise QB".  There's only maybe 5 or so "Elite franchise QB's" in the NFL.  Most of other 27 are still "franchise QB's" (at least to some degree) who will have their "up and down" games.  The better half of those 27 will have more good games than bad games and would be considered "true franchise QB's"  So let's say there's another 13-14 "true franchise QBs"

Wentz was an "Elite franchise QB" in 2017 but went down to a "true franchise QB" level in 2018 and 2019.  In 2020 he he regressed and no longer played the way you would expect a franchise QB to play.

On a positive note, if Howie uses this logic on Pace in Chicago, he’ll either give us 2 first rounders, or he’ll climb a tower with a semi auto rifle and a bag of groceries.  Either way it’s a good story.

We’re not really comparing Hurts to Tebow are we? Lol

You mean comparing Hurts to a more successful college QB who was not benched and forced to transfer, who was drafted earlier, and who is the only QB in recent history with a comparable tendency to run versus pass in critical situations?

I'd say its a fair comparison.

I don't want to jump to conclusions with Hurts because it was his rookie year and he didn't have a proper offseason to gear up so I'll give him that benefit of the doubt, but if the gameplan and scheme is anything like we saw in his four starts this season, count me out. I am so out on this dual-threat running QB gimmick scheme. Do you want your QB to be athletic enough to move outside the pocket and create when things break down? Absolutely. But I don't want him rushing for 60-100 yards a game. Because when it comes down to mattering, that philosophy always fails and/or he gets hurts eventually.

What I give Hurts credit for and his best characteristics are that he's coachable, he works hard, and he'll buy into whatever the coaches want him to do. Those were the qualities he showed in college and they're admirable. But my concern is that he just doesn't have the tools to be a franchise QB. If/when Wentz is traded, we'll find out assuming they roll with him as the starter for 2021. But if they try to roll out this Lamar Jackson/Read option offense it's not going to last. And I hope Sirianni and co. are smart enough to know that.

It's wishful thinking on my part that the Eagles are not in that group.

This is the most positive thing I've ever seen you post, but I'm taking credit for getting it out of you.

There is no way the Eagles are getting two firsts and a player for Wentz. If Howie gets a first and a second for him he will have done extremely well.

I definitely respect what Matt Ryan has done.  At 35 and on that team, however, that's a non-viable relationship at this point.  I assume ATL is aware of that, but I don't follow the falcons so I really don't know...maybe they go up a rung to teams with assets preparing to cut bait.

They also owe him a ton of money this year and next year to get out of. I guess because the Eagles might do it and the Rams did it they could. However is cap is 40 mil with dead money 49 for 2021. In 2022 it’s 41.6 million and 26.5 dead money. To me the bigger issue for Atlanta lately has been the defense is consistently god awful

If they start with that offense, it will be a double gut punch.  First knowing that we have no qb, second knowing that the new coach is an idiot.

I don't think they are dumb enough to do that though.

Idk atlanta committed to Matt Ryan. Say whatever you want Matt Ryan in the 5 year window has played like a top 10 QB outside of his 2017 season. His averaged over a five year window 67% completion, 4605 yards, 30 tds and 10 picks. That’s top 10 in like every major category

He is one of the more underrated  QB's in the NFL.  Heck, he was an All-Pro as recent as 2016 and has been very solid since.

Nobody knows what Hurts is or isn’t going to do these same experts claimed Wentz was elite, he isn’t.

Until hurts wins a playoff game, no we are not

His 2018 was nearly as good as his mvp season. He threw for over 4900 yards and i believe that was 20 yards less than his mvp season. He also completed 69% of his passes like his mvp season. And had same amount of ints (7). Only difference was really 38 tds his mvp season to 35 in 2018

The Falcons defense has been bad since 2017.

There's going to be a lot of crow eating around here if Hurts impresses next season.

Hey there!  I'm the English language.  Have we met?

Some of the Hurts issues are extrinsic, but that doesn't help his chances of success.  If we are to believe that everything was the fault of Doug and his staff, they were such horrible teachers...well, Hurts is basically a rookie in 2021 with last year mostly wasted.

He spent most of the season learning to either lineup at WR or be a shotgun wildcat QB.  Once he does get real playing time, half the plays are designed QB runs.  The other half he's encouraged to run immediately after his first read.  On critical 3rd and 4th downs, he ALWAYS ends up running.

You don't have to blame Hurts for that if you don't want.  Put it on Doug or whomever.  But it's a problem nonetheless.  The guy has no idea how to run an NFL offense.

So how is the 2022 QB draft class? Because it's sure looking like Wentz is gone and if they roll with Hurts, combined with all the cap casualties, they'll absolutely be picking at worst top 10.

 Not great

I know.  I'm Irish.  Plus, I was watching The Quiet Man recently so I recalled that scene where Squire Danaher asks Feeney to write Sean Thornton's name in his book (after he bought White O'Morn out from under him) and strike a line through it.

Great great movie.

Omg now we are changing the goal post again to elite level franchise QB and true franchise level qb. Lol. You justify it anyway you want. Have a good night

Tebow is an interesting comparison to Hurts...considering that Hurts has the lowest ratio of passing yards to rushing yards of any qb to start 4 or more games since Tim Tebow.

That stat actually favors Hurts.  It states that he had some exceptional games since he also passed for 1061 yards. Had he only passed for say 500 or so yards, then it would look bad.  But the fact that he rushed for 350 (or so) yards AND passed for 1061 yards, providing a total offensive production of over 1400 yards in less than 4 games is elite level production.

How many yards did Tebow pass for?

A few things on Jalen Hurts....

When you get hired on most jobs, you have at least a "90 day probationary period".  During that time, most businesses evaluate your performance, etc.  At the end of the 90 days (unless you get fired for disciplinary reasons before then) your employer typically gives you some sort of evaluation and if you pass, you are hired as a "permanent" employee.  At least that's the way it's been for the vast majority of my jobs.

For a rookie QB, their entire pre-season (4 games) and every game they play during their rookie year would be the equivalent of the 90 days.   Let's say on average a starting caliber rookie QB starts about halfway through their rookie years and ends up playing 8 games....for a total of 12 games their rookie year.

Hurts has played less than 4 games.  For those that are ready to dismiss him after 4 games (which he actually performed well, given the circumstances) it would be the equivalent of your boss firing you for performance reasons 30 days into your 90 day grace period.  What successful business would do that?  Especially since they basically trained you the entire time during those first 30 days.
