They could have traded him before last season started and gotten a 3rd round pick.

Of course they could trade JJ Watt, but Watt has probably asked for a release so he can go somewhere as a FA.  The Texans are doing him a big solid in deference to the great ambassador he’s been for the organization.

In contrast to the guy who wants to force his way out because he wants to dictate executive hires for the organization

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Is Watt shot?

For the right team and at the right price, you absolutely take a chance on him. It ain't us though.

I think GB, Indy, Buffalo make a lot of sense. Seems like he'll go to Pittsburgh to play with his bro though.

JJ Watt says he asked to be released and the #Texans granted it. The move saves $17.5M in salary cap space.

Can Pittsburgh afford him?

It certainly looks like he's on the downswing of his career. Last year he played 91.5% of defensive snaps and only managed 5 sacks and 11 hurries. In 2018 he had 16 sacks and 32 hurries. He could probably be in a rotation somewhere and contribute but his days of being a dominant defensive lineman seem to be behind him.

My guess is he’s off to GB or TB

Geez, Whatever Howie is, he's not whatever they have in Houston.

Or LA, 2 1sts and a 3rd and Goff for Stafford is crazy. I'm not sure I'd take Stafford over Wentz, Stafford has had his best seasons from age 28-32, he'll be 33, maybe he's peaking and will play at a high level into his mid-30s, or maybe that's all there is. That makes him a strong armed gamble, gee, what is Wentz? Question with Stafford is whether he made Golladay and Hockenson TE (#8 pick for you Pitts fans) into pro bowl players or they made him look good. And Marvin Jones ain't bad. And 2 1st rd picks on the OL.

In fact, Lions may have better offensive personnel than the Rams, who have an OL anchored by soon to be 40 years old Whitworth, Woods (29), Kupp coming off an injury, Reynolds, Jefferson at WR, and Higbee and Everett at TE, Akers and Henderson at RB. A good group but not a great group. Maybe Stafford puts them over the top, or maybe Woods is past his peak, Kupp is never the same and Whitworth hits his expiration date.

Every season J.J. Watt has qualified, he has finished as a top-10 player at his position:

2011 - 75.1 (8th)

2012 - 92.3 (2nd)

2013 - 93.2 (1st)

2014 - 92.7 (1st)

2015 - 91.6 (2nd)

2018 - 90.5 (3rd)

2019 - 87.0 (9th)

2020 - 85.5 (7th)

Does Tampa have room to sign him?

How can you bash me for being a fan of the only QB to win a Super Bowl for the Eagles?

Don't sweat it.  Most Eagles fans are fans of Nick Foles.  For whatever reason, some people in this blog seem to lose their minds every time his name is brought up...as if bringing his name up is somehow a shot against Wentz.

38 million before cuts and restructuring of contracts , need to sign

Godwin

Gronk

David

AB

Shaq ,but he may be odd man out with

Suh and Fournette

Guess it depends what Watt is looking for...I'd guess they sign all of their own players, minus Fournette and Suh

Seeing his production be damn near zilch since he left, and Watt top 10 without him, looks like I was 100% correct that Watt made Clowney productive, and he is just a guy without a first ballot hall of famer across from  him.

Like is this serious. A franchise QB who the majority of other teams would take is cooling off, someone we should REALLY KEEP and the media suggests to stoke the fire.

Media guys think they drive trades. OK.

No, they don’t.

So the Texans have:

Traded a 3rd for Duke

5th for Hyde

Traded multiple 1sts for a rookie LT on an expiring contract

Traded Franchise WR for David Johnson and a 2nd

Traded for Cooks and his massive contract

Released their Defensive MVP for nothing

And still have the Watson issue to deal with....

Maybe AFan was right, it could be a lot worse than Howie....

In this day and age, everyone has the same information, video is ubiquitous, even the CIA can't keep secrets for long, what it often comes down to in trades is a game of chicken.

Everyone knows what Wentz did in 2017 and 2020, they can see some loss of athleticism, but the arm strength is still there, the big body is there, question is whether you can fix him, and that's an unknown for both the Eagles and any buyer. What teams don't know is how driven Wentz is to succeed, he has money, a family and Christ, he simply may not have the competitive drive of a Brady, or last year might just have been one of those seasons. Some QBs play at a high level until 40, others burn out by 30. Some live for the game, to others it's just a well paying job. He could be Brees, coming back from a serious shoulder injury for a decade of excellence, or McNabb, who was never the same after his serious injury in 2005.

People who talk about Lurie having to save face, etc., simply don't follow the NFL. Teams have to work on overlapping three year cycles, that is, most contracts are effectively 3 year deals with options years for the team (pay the out years, eat the dead money, or renegotiate) - once you get to 2nd and 3rd contracts, the only difference between your own player and free agents is you have more information about your own player.

So trading up for Wentz was a success, the centerpiece of a rebuild that got them to the playoffs 3 times and won a SB - ask any GM if he'd make that deal if that was the outcome!

It also means it's sunk costs, and whatever they get for Wentz, if they don't see him in their plans for the next 3-5 year cycle, is a plus.

It’s obvious to all but the Carstans that his priorities lie elsewhere.  He spent the entire offseason playing house, huntin, and fishin, instead of working on his game.  We all saw the results.  That’s why Lowie is good with cutting bait now. You can’t win paying this guy $35M/yr.

I see there are still some hoagie mouth morons who believe their beloved ''franchise QB'' isn't being traded and this is all just being driven by the media.

Yep, and as much as it sucks to not get that first, they should probably just take the two 2nd round picks and move on already.

Nah, Lurie called him an asset, Sirianni declined to commit to him and Carson is radio silent just because.

Everything is fine. The media is making it up.

Two, 1sts and a 2nd rounder for Tunsil I think.  That’s just crazy.

Siri isn't going to build an offense around Hurts based on his running, that's stupid b/c it's not sustainable.

He's going to try to turn Hurts into a pocket QB who can run when needed, both scrambles and designed runs, but not as the centerpiece of the offense.

A QB who can pass out of the pocket effectively but also run is much harder to defend, because the defense can't focus on his legs, so when he does take off, or you call a designed run or RPO type play, you can catch them flatfooted.

Which means Wentz can run the same offense. The difference from Doug will be more horizontal routes and fewer vertical routes, scheming receivers open underneath.

Doesn't mean Wentz will stay, but it does mean Zangaro is off the mark, Siri isn't going to tailor the offense to Hurts v Wentz, he's going to coach whatever QB he has to run his offense, tweaking it for their skill set, but there won't be separate offenses for each QB. That would be madness since who knows who the QB will be in 2 years.
