January 8, 20232 yr Author Basically did what some here wanted the house GOP to do: worked with moderate Dems to elect someone who (they believe at least) would work across the aisle, marginalizing the crazy wings. Republican Party didn't like that, and censured the reps that voted with Democrats. The more this happens the more it signals that politicians believe independent voters are reasserting themselves, and that the era of just playing to your base and extreme partisanship is perhaps flagging. Optimistic take to be sure but I'd love to see it. Worth noting though that Ohio did this before, Republicans seem to be pretty open to fighting over the speakership. One of the last (Republican) house speakers is going to trial for corruption over $62m in bribes and dark money to pass certain legislation. Ho hum.
