The shooter will claim stand your ground as a defense and won't be charged. Because, if you don't like the person ringing your doorbell, in Missouri, you can shoot them without any consequences. Just what the NRA wants.
April 17, 20232 yr George Santos is running for re-election. The Trump-Santos 2024 ticket is still in play:

April 18, 20232 yr Is it just me or has Nate Silver become dumber with each election cycle? He's actually trying to make the case that DeSantis getting stomped out by Trump in '24 will help more than hurt him for another run in '28? WTF?
April 18, 20232 yr Author He's gotten out over his skis wading in to punditry, but I see the logic here. If he actually manages to bloody Trump in the 2024 primary and somehow maintains respectability then there's a chance it helps him be the frontrunner in 2028. Thing is, 5 years is forever in politics. And I think DeSantis is a crappy candidate in any year, so I don't think he'll be able to muster a respectable showing in 2024 nor do I think he has much chance in 2028 unless he really steps back and learns how to actually gladhand. But at his age I don't think he's going to improve his charisma from 5 to 16 in 4 years. (nerd scale) The guy is a jerk and it comes through in every public event.

Forget the "DeSantis is a saner version of Trump" narrative. This man is a lunatic that needs to be kept as far from the white house as possible.

There are no GOP candidates who've gone toe to toe with Trump have come out stronger from it. Not a single one. Kasich, Cruz, Christie, Rubio, etc. And we all know what happens to anyone in the senate or house who dares to step out of line and speak the truth about the election. Trump is king of the morons and absolutely bloodies all challengers from that side of the aisle. If DeSantis wants the maximize his chances to win the nomination, his best bet is to avoid Trump all together and wait it out until '28. There is really no plausible scenario I can envision where he takes him head on in '24 and survives enough to stick around for a second go at it in '28.

All of those famed Trump takedowns are 8 years ago, and this nation has dealt with a lot of Trump since then. I don't know what the path is, I suspect someone is going to have to basically just ignore Trump and stand tall on their own. I don't see DeSantis as being the guy who can do that. If Kemp can tone down his accent maybe he can, dunno. But acting like Trump is an unstoppable force in 2023/2024 is also a fallacy IMHO. A lot of Republicans, even those who "support his policies", want to move on. Given an option that doesn't try to out fire-bomb Trump, who looks like a sane and sober person touting reasonable policies next to an orange lunatic, and you may get enough Republicans v2024 to turn the page.

It's a really terrible take by Silver. He's pretending like Trump's new to the scene or something and the regular rules apply to him. They don't. It doesn't matter what anyone on the right says about him. No one cares. He lives in the sewer and you can't bloody him because he has absolutely no shame and neither does his following. DeSantis's best strategy is to pray he chokes on a ham sandwich or gets convicted in the DOJ case and can't run, but the latter isn't happening before election, so I guess he should just hope he pulls a Mama Cass. Otherwise it's '28 or bust for Meatball Ron.

I don't see the gop primary race as being even remotely competitive as things stand now. I know we joke about polls, but there haven't been any that show the race for the gop nomination as even remotely close.

The party has had so many opportunities to distance themselves from him and they've balked every single time. They're too afraid of their voters who are fed a steady diet of Fox News and believe every stupid thing that dribbles out of the lips of Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity. The minute Trump decided to run, he already sealed up the nomination. All those republicans who support his policies but hate him as a candidate are simply outnumbered by the dyed in the wool cultists who will still vote for him no matter what happens. They're looking for sanity in a party where there simply isn't any and hasn't been for a long time.
