Republicans could have easily decided to try for the middle and attempt to woo a small number of Democrats to support a firmly right-of-center house leader who doesn't lick Trump's boots - a guy like Emmer. That they chose instead to side with Gaetz and the fire-bombing idiots who caused this whole mess with no clear plan in place on who would replace McCarthy. It's clear that the Republican party is being led around by the most radical, insane members. The same is not so for Dems. It's a joke. Had it right until the end. Same is true for the dems

It maintains the status quo while McCarthy gets to fix Gaetz and his merry band of petulent children. What status quo? What kind of clown car the GOP wants to be? I fail to see why the Dems should assist this party of election denying dirtballs.

Seems that McCarthy was a more palpable option to them than Mike Johnson. McCarthy wasn't a real Speaker, he was beholden to Gaetz and his group from the concessions he gave them to get elected Speaker, and he reneged on a deal he agreed to with Biden -- meaning he was basically useless. The goal for Democrats is to retake the House in November 2024. I'm sure they surmised the next Speaker was more likely to be a MAGA tool than a "moderate Republican", and (if there is a strategy) they know that a majority of Americans support keeping the government open, providing aid to Ukraine and Israel, and accessibility to abortion, and they will force Johnson's hand in trying to block those measures -- to his party's own peril.

There are a handful that likely would have been "allowed" to vote to retain McCarthy if he was willing to play ball with them. He publicly stated that wasn't on the table, and I have little reason to doubt it. Notwithstanding that McCarthy's promises are worth even less than a typical politician's.

But when push came to shove, McCarthy was able to deliver a bill to keep the government running and Ukraine aid without cuts or additional items (hence status quo). But now we have an idiot who is beholden to a set of Fing morons which will pretty much insure that nothing gets done. No one wins except the campaigns. The next 15 months will be an absolute shitshow.
October 26, 20231 yr Compromise is how US government functions for over 200 years. For several weeks Republicans tried to act like they have a super-majority in the House but failed to replace McCarthy. With their slim majority in the House, they had to make a choice. They could have reached across the aisle to Democrats to get the Speaker votes they needed. They refused. Instead, they have walled themselves off and forced themselves to work with the crazy ultra-right MAGAs. That they settled on a guy like Johnson for Speaker shows how out of touch they are with the rest of America. If Republicans keep pushing toward autocracy, they will fail. 11 minutes ago, Alphagrand said: McCarthy wasn't a real Speaker, he was beholden to Gaetz and his group from the concessions he gave them to get elected Speaker, and he reneged on a deal he agreed to with Biden -- meaning he was basically useless. That's true. Democrats (who btw also have a slim-majority in the Senate, and hold the Presidency) have power in the House because the ultra-right MAGA holdouts have hamstrung the GOP. So Democrats do not have to bend to Republican demands. Rather they should reach to the middle, but they fail to do so.

I agree they give religion a bad name, but still. Gaetz saying what he did is more WTH. Maybe it's the wrong messenger, but I have no problem with someone saying prayer is appropriate.

Krav Maga and others, if taught by a high level instructor, and practiced often do have disarming techniques. Jiu-Jitsu is loved by team guys like Jocko for a reason as well. Should Hannity be the poster boy for it? No. As someone who's been in martial arts his whole life he drives me up a wall when he talks about his training and Kenpo. Will it help if you charge someone straight on with an AR? Probably not. Are there situations where training could take one down? Absolutely, but people laughing at that statement outright are ignorant as well.
