A religion teacher, a Catholic priest who taught in Dougherty, was a pompous jackass who would throw me out of his class for asking questions about the stuff in the bible.

Thanks to him, I read it cover to cover, so I could find a story that would make him turn red and kick me out of his class. I would get suspended, and my parents would ask why, they would say, "Asking questions." and their response, "And you don't like that in your students?"

In a Catholic school? No, they don't want any students asking questions.

The look on the face of the vice-principal, the school disciplinarian, a priest, when my parents basically torched them for discouraging questions, was a priceless moment I will cherish forever. He expected my parents to back up his BS.

Um…no

its another in a long series of human created narratives trying to explain the unknown. More specifically what we didnt understand at the time, some of which we still dont

which makes it even less useful as a candidate for civil policy guidance after 2000 years of human development.

The bible teaches people how to be better humans. You don't have to crap on the bible and religion because evangelicals are nut jobs

Golly. Mr. Bootsontheground doesn't believe me.

I may never post again.

Most of the moral lessons are horrible. Sadly, the New Testament, actually has a lot of good guidance on living a moral life. The GOP rejects these lessons as being soft, and liberal.

I can’t say I ever read the OT cover to cover but I went to a lot of Mennonite Churches as a kid and they are heavy on the brim and firestone sermons and lessons.

I’ve read much more the NT and while I pretty much threw it all out when I first left the cult, I have since come to see the good teachings in it. I couldn’t care less if Jesus was real or a myth if people use his message for good.

Interesting that you would discourage picking up the Bible.

Good point. Why do we even need a constitution or a bill of rights when we have the bible? We should just let religion govern our country like they do in Iran.

Was your teacher's name Corn Pop by any chance?

Might be a good time to ask Mike Johnson when he's going to instruct the Republican conference to expel George Santos.

I had the exact opposite experience. None of my Religion teachers in HS took the Bible literally and encouraged debate about the deeper meaning behind the stories.

Only for a half a year. I was asked to leave (expelled). I'm proud of it, oddly.

Were they priests? Was this in California, or Massachusetts?

Delaware.

None of my religion teachers were priests. One was a former nun that had left, but my favorite (who I named a scholarship after) was just a great teacher.

Ah, that would explain it. With the exception of 1 nun, every good teacher I had in Catholic school was a lay teacher.

My kids go to catholic school. All the teachers are lay teachers.

I had 2 nuns as teachers in 4 years, and they were both US History teachers (basic then AP). I can't recall any nuns that were Religion teachers. The only priest in the school was the school chaplain.

My favorite teacher did spend some time studying with priests, but I don't believe he ever entered Seminary.

it was interesting going to Catholic school as a heathen. On Fridays at my first school, right before lunch was mass - it was decided that me sitting there, not participating was a distraction to the other students. I was asked not to attend, and had a double lunch hour every Friday.

CD was not so lenient.

If Trumpism is the next Reaganism just imagine what our leaders will be like in 30 years.

They made me go to mass for the first couple years, but my junior and senior years they let me skip. But there were a bunch of non-Catholics that didn't accept eucharist. You just went up and said "I don't receive" and walked back to your seat. I'd say ~40% of the honors students were non-Catholic, though few were non-Christians (me and a Jewish kid in my grade).

My favorite teacher used to come in after grading exams and berate the class going "the heathen (me) got an A, what happened to the rest of you!"

I was the ONLY on-Catholic in junior high. I was actually used to going to church, and going through the motions. The school didn't know what to do with me. Doughterty was different.
