April 24, 20205 yr From the front lines.. my sister sent this text about her night last night with a 70 yr old patient. Underlying conditions: ... it happened all of a sudden. She woke up at like 4:30 after being pretty lethargic all night and said call my husband I’m tired. So we call him and the son and she’s begging them to let her go she’s so tired. We tell the husband to come in and we make her comfort care and she doesn’t have IV access so we are trying to get her comfortable with Fing IM morphine and roxanol squirted in her mouth. The husband gets there and I go down to get him and he’s a big guy with white hair like dad and I bring him up and gown him up and he starts bawling and I take him in and the whole thing was awful. She kept gasping for air and then not breathing for a bit and then taking big gasps and he’s telling her it’s okay to go... She died while he was holding her hand. End of life stories are always difficult and brutal... for the families and these healthcare workers, many of whom don’t normally do end of life and critical care. It’s so sad when you hear about the specifics of what people are dealing with.
