There were plenty of articles out there talking about it as soon as the vaccines started meeting up with the mutations. I've been on board with the yearly combo covid-flu shot since I first read about it. We also knew that the first vaxes were imperfect, blockers meant to get us by until we developed something better.
November 17, 20214 yr I'm sorry is that *squints* 93% vaccinated Ireland. *rubs eyes* *squints again* Well that's unfortunate.

November 17, 20214 yr Why Spain has avoided Europe's COVID surge https://news.yahoo.com/why-spain-has-avoided-europes-covid-surge-100025909.html Quote As most of Europe suffers a COVID-anxiety attack, however, la buena vida continues in Spain. Crowds revel at terrace bars, drinking sangria and eating tapas into the night, the clubs have reopened, crowds frolic at beach parties and wine festivals, and unlike in many Western European countries, a vaccine passport is still not required. According to Statista, the COVID rate in Spain over the past seven days is 46 per 100,000 population, compared to Austria at 851, the Netherlands at 539 and Slovenia at 1,058. Quote The reason for the relatively carefree mood across Spain, said Dr. Daniel Lopez-Acuña, former director of Health Action in Crisis at WHO, is the country’s very high vaccination rate, nearing 90 percent of those 12 and older, and its continued protection measures, like indoor mask mandates, which, unlike most places, Spain never dropped. Those precautions are paying off. "Spain is doing particularly well compared to other European countries,” Lopez-Acuña told Yahoo News, crediting health agencies, stringent class-size reductions and mask wearing in schools, and a science-accepting public, as well as long-enduring COVID restrictions. Oh. Vaccines, masks and mandates work. Oh.

Vaccines, masks and mandates work. Oh. That article is strange because Spain is dealing with an uptick in cases and their 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants is at 82. Quote The epidemiological curve of the coronavirus in Spain is once again on an upward trend, with cases rising at an accelerating rate. According to the latest Health Ministry report, released on Monday evening, the 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants now stands at 82. This is up nearly 11 points from Friday, the previous day for which data is available as no figures are released on the weekend. In comparison, last Monday, November 8, the incidence rate rose just five points over the same time period. In just two weeks, the incidence rate in Spain has risen 67%. Although the number of cases in Spain is still well below those being reported in many other European countries, in some regions, such as the Basque Country and Navarre, infection rates are double the national average. Hospital admissions for Covid-19 are also slowly rising and some regional governments are now considering introducing restrictions to control the spread of the virus. https://english.elpais.com/society/2021-11-16/coronavirus-contagions-in-spain-accelerate-as-incidence-hits-82-cases-per-100000-inhabitants.html Still, their numbers are better than much of Europe even the countries with similar vaccination rates and restrictions. Very odd.

Last I saw it was, on average, better than that (mortality somewhere in the 20-40s depending on the study you look). With new techniques and management strategies the numbers seemed to be improving as the pandemic went on (initially mortality was much higher, I saw 80 once in a very early and small study) but I don't know how/if delta changes that now. Age is also another factor that increases risk. Hope he pulls through Di.

These anti-vaxxers are about to find out how much more insidious Delta is compared to OG covid. Same for parents on the fence about getting their kids vaxed. My kids are in between doses and we had to pull them out of school yesterday due to a close call. I am not at all interested in F'ing around and finding out now that we are so close to being able to fully protect them.

Like you said the studies are a little skewed since they are counting the really high numbers in the beginning. What I read about being mechanically ventilated is crazy. Are there different types of O2-the rate-and then the criteria to determine if it is helping him or not? It's a little over my head. Let alone the risk for further lung injury, loss of muscle mass, and other physical therapy issues he will have if by some miracle he comes out of it. 1 hour ago, Jsvand12 said: If he was intubated his chances are pretty grim unfortunately. After seeing some of you in here with no adverse or different effects from the boosters shot, and it should get open to all adults within the next week or so, I went ahead and scheduled my booster. Sticking with the Moderna. Dec 1-just under 7 months out from 2nd dose.
