June 25, 20205 yr 42 minutes ago, Kz! said: This is funny because the WHO, CDC, and US Surgeon General were actively telling us not to wear masks at the beginning of the pandemic and actually chiding those that did. Actually, no. It isn't funny at all. Except to crap sucking a-holes. When the virus first hit, there was a lot of bad information. There is still a lot we don't know. We do know masks help slow the spread. I bet you don't wear a mask out, right? Are you one of the tool bags responsible for the US leading the world in infections and deaths?
June 25, 20205 yr Greg Abbot just ordered all elective surgeries to be cancelled in all major Texas cities. There is discussion in Dallas about turning the huge convention center into a popup medical facility. It's New York all over again and nobody learned anything.
June 25, 20205 yr 43 minutes ago, Lloyd said: Right. But then they changed their position and, like scientists do, they explained why. So is your argument that masks don't help? Or that Trump is right to forgo masks, even though they DO help? He thinks that blaming departments of the Trump administration somehow diverts blame from the Trump administration. Also, he's an idiot.

It’s more apparent now, than ever. That said, living here in Central Florida, I would "guess” it’s only about 10-20% of the population that feels masks are a violation of their rights and/or some sort of conspiracy.
June 25, 20205 yr Its just so shocking that this highly contagious virus is spreading again now that people are in contact with one another. Wild. Who would have thunk it.

June 25, 20205 yr Sad truth: Both are true. The rally was attended by less than 7,000 people and since staffers brought COVID with them, people got infected. Apparently a dozen secret service agents, among others, while you puss bags yuk it up. Smooth - do people usually get possibly fatal illnesses from your lame attempts at humor?
June 25, 20205 yr 1 hour ago, lynched1 said: the left headline is misleading. it's purposely linking two separate topics, at least at this stage. OK may have reported its highest number of cases, but it's not linked in any way to a rally - at least not yet. it may be that there will be a spike in cases related, but it would be impossible to parse them out from case growth unrelated to that particular event - not to mention it's unclear how many attendees were actually from OK. the right is a bit more meaningful, only because there has been more time for an increase in cases to appear and be measured. there was some concern that there would be a spike, but it does not appear that there has been an appreciable increase around these protests.

Otherwise I'm in trouble.
June 25, 20205 yr The rally was 6 days ago. Spike was already happening. I also think we won't know about the cities with protests for another week. Politicizing and rushing to conclusion on a novel virus is so idiotic. It pains me this is happening after what NY just went through and there's still people out there thinking it's nothing to worry about.

June 25, 20205 yr Just now, VanHammersly said: It's still risky. You can't tell me they didn't spread it at those huge protests. no doubt. I'm sure there was some spread, it would be impossible for that number of people to be together without having some communication of the disease. but if you wear masks and you're outdoors in the sun a lot, it goes a long way. and when a few of those connections in something that might otherwise spread exponentially are broken, it can really drop the growth/spread rates significantly.

It's certainly better than riding your rascal through an indoor MAGA rally with no mask, but it's still unnecessarily risky. For the most part, I believe in the cause of the protests, but right now, in the middle of all this, it's felt like a bad time for it.

I'm pretty sure being cooped up for 2-3 mos was part of the motivation behind the protests. obviously Floyd was the catalyst, and we'll never know what the numbers might have looked like without the pandemic, but I think both the pandemic and the economic stresses related to the pandemic were a contributing factor to the response being so rapid and pronounced.

From your article: "They also think one potential explanation for why there was no spike in COVID-19 cases could be that more people who were not involved in the protests stayed home than they would have otherwise, fearing police violence or being swept up in the protests."

Hopefully we can completely eradicate this disease once and for all if only we keep gathering in large groups without social distancing to protest.
