Hate to break the bad news but cases are never going away, so enjoy your mask forever and living in fear

Probably but we're not at the point yet where our healthcare industry can withstand us just saying "f**** it" and throwing caution to the wind.

I'm not fearful at all, I'm just not a big baby who whines about wearing a mask during a pandemic because I have a warped understanding of liberty and common decency. I stopped noticing the mask over my face ages ago. Who cares?

Well hospitalizations have not been lower in a long time, even the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia announcing there is no need for a mask mandate, so the health care industry is doing fine it seems

lol 3.1% positivity for a virus that's extremely mild in almost everyone. Time to dramatically change our lives again! We gotta get out in front of this thing!

40 people hospitalized in Philly which is a drop from last week. It’s a COVID explosion

I am 100% some people are hopeless. Not seeing that positivity rate drop for that anytime soon

I am really glad COVID agreed to a ceasefire for a week in Philly. Party like it’s 2019 sheeple

Wait, so is it, "There's no impending surge and no need to take any precautions. Nothing to see here, move along folks!" or is it "Look at those morons giving a grace period, the masks should go on now!"

I can't keep up

There is no need  but if they actually believe they need to get out in front of it then they are morons for waiting a week.

You have to give people time to comply, this is SOP with any ordinance.

Honestly, you are just as extreme as the anti mask people, just in the other direction.

Both stances are nuts IMO.

My stance is that the pandemic is not over (fact) and that we should still mask up when transmission is high, since masks are proven at reducing transmission (fact). If you think that's "nuts," that says a lot more about you that it does about me.

Cool. I'll just disagree. The current mask mandates make no sense. You can't argue that. They are  not mandating N95. The cloth masks that pretty much every wears are useless. It's for show at this time.

By your logic, using the current situations right now, cloth masks should be mandated every flu season. And I say this having never complained about wearing one, and if mandated today in my local, I still won't complain.

Like I said, ideally, we would be pushing K95s, but people would just laugh, b***h, and moan about that, too. Cloth masks are highly ineffective at this stage but not "useless." A face covering of some kind is still better than none at all. It is not for show, it is going back to proven mitigation efforts during times when the spread is rapidly increasing, because letting it spread unchecked is just going to more quickly produce more variants that could potentially evade vaccine protection altogether. You're making this more complicated than it really is.

You could always stay at home. Nothing reduces your rate of infection better.

I'm really more concerned about those around me than I am about myself personally. Sure, staying home entirely would take my risk as low as possible (not that my job would allow for it anyway), but it's about balancing risk. The situation is not so dire that we need to stay home but tenuous enough that masking is advisable in the current circumstances.

No, you are. You are advocating mandating something that, in your own words, is "highly ineffective". It's stupid but like I said, if mandated I'll just wear it while thinking it's stupid. I am not complicating a thing because, as I said, I'll go with the flow as it's not worth the energy.

All I'm doing is discussing it with a rando on a football message board. If you think that's the definition of a person complicating a public health issue, that's definitely evidence of you taking it to an absolute extreme, like I said earlier.

Risk is subjective.

I actually didn't "advocate" mandating anything. I simply said that wearing a mask is the right thing to do in this environment.

Yes, so it depends on the subject and their particular circumstances. My grandmother is pretty frail, in her mid-80s, and has been in and out of the hospital recently. It seems like a good idea for me to be masking up.

So you agree the aforementioned mandate is stupid and shouldn't be executed? Because it didnt sound that way from your posts concerning the matter.

So you want everyone to wear a mask?

I'm not sure what the relative effectiveness is, but what I do know is that the insistence that any mask other than a KN95/N95 is "worthless" is heavily overstated. If everyone is masking, regardless of the variety of mask used, it is still going to have a positive impact on reducing trasnmission.

I want everyone to be able to simply use their better judgment, stop seeing this as black-and-white, and at least mask up in high-risk scenarios during times of high transmission.
