They're not foolproof but they reduce risk. Covid is carried by droplets. Masks help screen and deflect droplets. Not foolproof but helpful. If you're in a very crowded space like a school, train station, whatever, they're going to be even less helpful. But the claims they "do nothing" are based on willful ignorance.
