The school my kids go to announced yesterday that they plan to reopen in September with a normal 5 day schedule.

I'm sure it was Trump's tweet that did it. ;)

Dallas County Judge, when asked why in July there's still not enough testing resources and results arent coming back fast enough to help with contact tracing:

"Its just a breakdown of the State and Federal government.  Since May we've been asking for reagents that could help us run 6600 tests per day right here in our hospitals.  They won't give us those and we have to send all the tests to a federal lab somewhere out of state.  It's taking 8-10 days to get the results back, and that's just useless."

This is why our cases keep going up.  Not because of more testing, but because the administration  has moved on to other things and doesn't CARE about the pandemic anymore.

States are going to have school.  There is a mask requirement for the kids to wear them in school though from the PA dept of health as of right now.  Not sure how that will work out with the younger kids but whatever.  Just get them the F out of my house.

My kids need to be in school in some way shape or form. My daughter has a learning disability and I feel she fell further behind because of online school for the last 3.5 months of this past school year. Their school is going to take as many precautions as they can, so we will see how it goes.

Kids aren't really an issue with this disease thankfully. I wonder about the teachers and other staff though.

Both mine are elementary aged.  My wife and I worked our asses off keeping them on their virtual learning stuff and ensured all the core stuff was completed even though it was voluntary.  They did good but we're not providing the feedback they get from in class learning from their teachers.  We both were fortunate enough to be working from home so we could share duties and work when we needed to but it was unsustainable for us to give up half our day to teaching.

That's where the hurdle is.  Teacher's union is going to fight tooth and nail.

I guess if you're a teacher with underlying health issues you just have no choice but to go to school and possibly die since trump tweeted the schools must reopen.

They tend not to be effected as much as adults, but those germy little Fs are the world's worst vectors when it comes to viruses

C'mon. That's on the nursing home

I read an article earlier that said PA had one of the nations most aggressive pandemic plans -HOWEVER, it was NEVER implemented.  What happened in our nursing homes is criminal and there should be further investigation.  Most definitely was state and local level decisions.  Not orange man. This home in East Vincent Twp. (pop. 3,323) has recorded 39 deaths according to the county's web page.  The WP article states 43.  These families deserve answers and a definite "cause of death."  Hard to believe there's at least a 6 month waiting list to get into this place.

Well he won’t wear a mask because it would cover his face which was made in gods image, so maybe he is?

I don't know how you guys with young children do it.  For once, I'm happy to be old as this school opening issue is not something I have to worry about so much.  I also see them opening, and probably having interruptions.  Will see what the unions do, but I would think we have to try to get them back?  If it doesn't work you shut it down and start over with a new plan.

My daughter is a reading specialist.  Throughout this pandemic ordeal, she has been in tears, ready to quit her job, and I've heard some other teachers on a zoom meeting that were also in tears.  Some of them have young children as well.  The current situation is not sustainable.  A real challenge whereas everyone's health is involved.  I worry for all of you.

We have a 4-yr old and a 9-yr old and we're planning on homeschooling this year.  No doubt that in GA they'll open the schools at least in some capacity, but it's easier just to plan on homeschooling with groups of other kids in the neighborhood.

Glad that's a good choice for you and your kids. And having small groups of neighborhood kids for social interaction as well.  #thumbsup and good luck.

Brother has a 12 yr and a 9 yr old, both girls, and he doesn't want them anywhere near the school for the foreseeable future.

How’s that work? Everyone takes a day a week to teach? Normal jobs good with that?

On the teaching/schooling stuff:  my wife is a teacher and our district is talking about possibilities of doing 2 groups - group 1 comes Monday-Tuesday. Group two comes Thursday-Friday.  Wednesday is cleaning day.  When not in school you’re learning remotely.  This would be the same live on class instruction but via a computer.  Duplicate workbooks and materials - one for home one for school so limiting what is being brought back and forth. Every student is getting a new chrome book.  That’s the best plan I’ve heard so far.  Doing all remote learning is tough because it’s not the same level of instruction. I don’t care how good of a home school teacher mom think she is, it’s not the same.  And logistically you can’t split the day into shifts to have group 1 am and group 2 pm, so it has to be a split week. Parents can more easily adjust schedules to be home 2 days than to be home half a day for 5.

The questions nobody has answers for are the what if’s....Johnny gets sick, ms. Johnson gets sick, a bus driver gets sick, etc.  do you close the class? The school? The district?  For how long?  There’s really no guidebook for that and nothing being directed by the doe, union, state, etc.  it’s just a lot of unknowns and variables that they are working through.  It may even mean starting school all remote learning until Jan 1.  To give them More time. But the overall consensus is that they want to be in school this year to some degree.

Looks like it would actually be 3 days a week which is still really tough.

Ace, hydroxychloroquine has not shown to cut fatality rates.   Again, observational studies do not prove effectiveness.  They show correlation, not causation.   Until it’s tested in a randomized clinical trial and shown that the treatment group has better outcomes than the control group, we can not say that it provides any benefit.

I was referring to "click bait" quotes like "Trump's drug kills this person or that person".  It should be up to a patient and their doctor if they want to take it...in the Ford study, it cut fatality rates by as high as 50%.   So if a doctor is comfortable using the guidelines from the Ford study, he should be able to do so without being criticized by the media for giving someone 'Trump's drug".

And you really need to stop dismissing peer reviewed studies, performed in state of the art health systems....a doctor would scoff at your notion that a peer-reviewed study is useless.

Correlation (at this point) with minimal risk and high reward is something most doctors would be on board with.

Not sure yet.  We're still figuring it out.  My wife's an artist but she basically hasn't worked since all this started, so it wouldn't be a problem for her.  With the other families it would be trickier though.   There's also the possibility of hiring a tutor for the group.

Just an absolute garbage human being.

My wife was furloughed so she spent all day everyday with the kids in their online schooling. That was the only reason it went as well as it did. My first grader likes school but needs help with the assignments. My 4th grader will not do anything school related unless she's forced. It was tough job for my wife. Because we send our kids to private school, we won't have to worry about any teacher's union. Its money well spent.

They should find a new line of work.

Ace, my dad is an anesthesiologist with 35 years of experience.  He has been stressing to everyone that a drug is not proven to be effective until it has gone through the clinical trial process. To not be misled by these articles touting observational studies as proof that a drug works.  He has specifically noted that these observational studies that have been done with HCQ do not prove that it is effective and that they should not be used as clinical guidance.

I posted 2 clinical trials to you that actually show that it was not effective.

Again, observational studies do not prove effectiveness. Randomized clinical trials with a control group do.
