OVIEDO, Fla. - A centenarian and Marine Corps veteran survived being hospitalized by COVID-19 and is sharing his story with FOX 35 News.

At 100, John Henry Chaney still likes to ride his bicycle every day.

"I feel great every day,” Chaney said. "The only thing I do is ride that bike and walk and look at the news. I like to know what’s going on in the world.”

Learning about COVID-19 spreading around the world and then contracting the virus himself.

"I would never thought that I would have anything like that,” he said.

Chaney lives in Oviedo with his daughter, Mary Johnson.  She said she knew something wasn’t right.

"He was having an issue with shortness of breath,” Johnson said. "When his temperature spiked 99.9 I said, ok we gotta go to the hospital.”

He was admitted right away at the Oviedo Medical Center in March.

"They say when I got to the hospital that I had pneumonia,” Chaney said.

He later tested positive for COVID-19 and was unable to have any visitors. He kept his 15 children, 38 grandchildren, and six great-grandkids updated by sending cell phone videos.

"That’s the first time we’ve ever been apart since he’s been living with me since my mom passed away,” his daughter said.

After just three days on oxygen and other treatments, he was able to finish recovering at home.

"I am blessed,” Chaney said. "The good Lord has taken care of me for something.”

Chaney has survived a lot in his 100 years; serving in the Marine Corps in World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima, a cancer diagnosis, and the loss of his wife in 2002. Now, five months after his fight with COVID, he’s doing well.

"I feel like I’m about 60 years old,” Chaney said.

And he’s still riding his bike.

"He rides that bike every day,” Johnson said.

So, file this one under "we're F'd as a country".

I was just at the grocery store and I walked the wrong way down the aisle (in my defense, the side of the aisle I went down wasn't marked), and about half way down a lady starts screaming hysterically about it, saying I'm too close and going the wrong way.  I wasn't about to get into it, so I said okay, stopped my cart and got what I needed a bit farther down.  Then, I headed back the way I came down the aisle.  Then, another lady heading the wrong way down the aisle was screamed at by the same lady that screamed at me.  But this time, she took it up a notch.  That lady screamed back a bit, but eventually they went their separate ways.

So, the screaming women then walks down the aisle and right past me, really close, and I asked her if she could take a few steps away from me because I'm kind of an a-hole and then she freaking lost it, started screaming as loud as she could, going nuts, and then the store manager stepped in and finally she stormed off.

So, the other lady walks up and I'm talking to her and the store manager.  So half way through the conversation this lady, who by now has decided to pull her mask down to talk to us, I guess thinks me and the store manager are on her level about all this, and she starts talking about how it's all a hoax created by the media and just goes on and on with the Trump talking points.  And me and the store manager finally walk away and he says "we're so screwed".

And also, before Kz chimes in, I believe that store manager was a certain former German theoretical physicist.

Stuff like this is just sad

Police in Virginia say that a rape suspect released from jail in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic went on to kill the woman who had accused him.

Ibrahim E. Bouaichi was tracked down by authorities on Wednesday, The Washington Post reports. But he shot himself and was in grave condition on Thursday.

Bouaichi was indicted last year on charges that included rape, strangulation and abduction. He was jailed without bond in Alexandria.

The woman testified against him in Alexandria District Court in December.

When the pandemic hit, Bouaichi’s lawyers argued that he should be freed awaiting trial because the virus endangered both inmates and their attorneys. He was released on $25,000 bond over the objections of a prosecutor.

Circuit Court Judge Nolan Dawkins released Bouaichi on the condition that he only leave his Maryland home to meet with his lawyers or pretrial services officials.

Alexandria police say that Bouaichi, 33, fatally shot the woman in late July.

Authorities said that federal marshals and Alexandria police spotted and pursued Bouaichi in Prince George’s County on Wednesday. He crashed his vehicle and apparently shot himself, authorities said.

Judge Dawkins retired in June. He did not respond to the Post's request for comment. Judges are often prohibited from commenting on pending cases.

Bouaichi's attorneys, Manuel Leiva and Frank Salvato, said in a statement that they were "certainly saddened by the tragedy both families have suffered here.” The lawyers said they "were looking forward to trial. Unfortunately the pandemic continued the trial date by several months and we didn’t get the chance to put forth our case.”

Police said the woman was a native of Venezuela and did not have family in this country. The Washington Post reported that very little information about her was available. The Associated Press does not identify persons who may have been sexually assaulted.

So you get the covid extremist, freaking out about you walking in her direction. And then you try to commiserate with a "normal" person who turns out to be a covid denier.

Fingers crossed for a vaccine...because we cannot rely on a change in human behavior to save us.

This is one reason why this virus is so baffling. The virus kills kids, but people 90+ survive it. I just don't get it.

Yep.  It was a perfect microcosm of the country.  Getting screamed at by a well intentioned, but way too high strung and annoying liberal and then turning around and there's a lunatic Republican that wants you to join her death cult.  And the manager told me that last night they had to drag a guy out of there for the same kind of thing.  We're all completely F'd.

Between Jan. 22 and May 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded only 13 deaths in children ages 0 to 9, out of more than 20,000 confirmed cases, and 33 deaths among those ages 10 to 19, out of more than 49,000 cases (see Table 3). That works out to a case fatality rate of around 0.06% to 0.07%, much lower than the case fatality rate for all ages of 5.4%.

All because you couldn't follow a simple direction of going the right way in an aisle :nonono:

Remember about 5 months ago we just needed 15 days to flatten the curve?  I miss those simpler times.

Marked safe from another fraudulent "stimulus bill".

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally: An event that brings thousands of tourists to a small South Dakota city is about to begin

"These people on motorcycles, they're risking their life every time they come across an intersection that has a car that can come out there and kill them," he said. "And so they're not all that concerned about a virus when they know what is needed to do in order to stay safe and minimize the risks of infection."

Just saw this. Sturgis SD.  Fools.  Wherever these people are from they are going to take it home and more community spread.  We are screwed.

Well, the SD governor says they’re ready for a maskless gathering with 250k people from all over the country.

What could possibly go wrong?

Just saw this on facebook.
