If there were 2 people there would be a fight, and they'd probably be family.

I know.  It's just crazy watching people fight in a stadium that's practically empty.  Although there are fights at preseason games too.  Smh...

Appearing on news programs while he should probably be working, huh?

You are watching some alternate reality TV stations? What are all these shows you see him on?

Unfortunately, I think it's about to get really, really bad, but I wasn't suggesting a nationwide lockdown. Aside from the questionable legality of such a move, it just wouldn't be practical. I think that it might be necessary for some states to lockdown particularly hard-hit counties, though. The idea would be to target clusters; don't amputate the whole hand when you can just take a finger, so to speak.

In an ideal world, people would just understand the gravity of the situation and self-quarantine through the winter. Figure out your bubble, take up some hobbies, and hunker down.

And that really wouldn’t do anything.  People who aren’t going to wear a mask when around others, are still going to not wear a mask when around others during a lockdown and Still will hang around other people and spread the virus.

While that is true, those people would be less likely to come into contact with other people, which would limit the spread. It's also been reported that a lot of cases are cropping up in people who've been to bars and restaurants. While masks do provide significant mitigation, it's still not as good as simply not being around other people. Like, just because people are wearing masks doesn't mean they should be crowding together. It seems like a lot of people think that they can just wear a mask and ignore social distancing.

Really, I wish people would just use common sense. Generally speaking, don't go out to eat or drink in indoor establishments, but if you do, don't hang there for hours on end and be mindful of just how close you are getting to each other. Unfortunately, though, people can't seem to responsibly handle any sort of grey area with this stuff. They just use it as an opportunity to be reckless.

I guess hes a liar, just like your fearless leader.

Again, masks don’t completely prevent the spread. Didn’t think I needed the qualifier "completely” but I guess I did. All I’m saying is that the leftists who defied social distancing recommendations to pile on top of each other in the thousands are complete morons who are murdering people by spreading this disease. They’re disgusting killers. Sorry if you want to defend them.

Years of overeating and a lack of exercise have prevented you from ascending a flight of stairs without sweating. No qualifier needed.

Are people wearing masks in bars and restaurants?  Nope.

No, and my point is that it's not a good idea for people to be going to bars and restaurants in the first place with cases spiking so dramatically at this time of year. It's a high-risk activity done out of choice rather than necessity. These places are breeding grounds for the virus and thus are the businesses that I think should provided some kind of short-term assistance so that they can temporarily close in the interest of public health.

I agree, but you don’t need a lockdown to stop indoor dining.   You’re talking about one small segment of the economy.   Just don’t allow indoor dining.

The decision should be as simple as this, if the activity cannot be done while wearing a mask, then don’t do/allow the activity.

That's a fair point. I guess my mind jumped straight to lockdown when the logical thing would be to implement some common-sense restrictions. I think public health unfortunately demands that we place limits on particular types of commercial activity for the time being, but I also feel for these small business owners and their employees. I just feel like the right thing to do would be to ensure that we undertake some necessary closures while also doing all we can to help those weather the storm who are most directly impacted on a financial level. It's screwed up that we shuttered all these small businesses, but then the federal government provided them virtually no resources in the stimulus to weather the storm, yet the Fortune-500 companies get all the bailouts they could dream of. It shouldn't be that we can't do what science tells us we should do because there are no safeguards to mitigate the individual economic repercussions. Our priorities are seriously screwed up.

I've been out to a restaurant a few times recently. Everyone was wearing a mask other than at their table, and the seating was socially distanced.

That is exactly what i've been saying.  Stop all indoor dining and indoor bars.  Prop up that segment of the economy with targeting stimulus and everyone else lives their life normally, with masks.

We haven't been inside a restaurant, other than to pick up food, since March.

W.H.O. says 40 million cases of coronavirus.  That's less than 1% of the world population.

It's a bold strategy, Cotton...

I feel like the East and West are worlds apart in terms of mask etiquette. When we were in Colorado this summer, people were noticeably more mindful of the mask regulations. I'd say about 80-90% of people in public were wearing masks and only removed them for the right reasons. People are much more lackadaisical about it in PA. I haven't dined indoors myself, but it seems that people basically just wear the mask through the door as a formality and then hang out maskless inside as long as they want.

To take it to the extreme, my brother was just in WV and said he saw several establishments with "Masks not allowed" signs

In West LA people are extremely compliant, at least at restaurants. Mask on anytime you get up from your table. No waiting inside for seating -- you wait outside, socially distanced. They even limit the restrooms so only 3 people max can be in there at any time.

The better weather definitely makes things easier, to be fair.

Well...

Seems safe to me. :mellow2:
