I feel like the East and West are worlds apart in terms of mask etiquette. When we were in Colorado this summer, people were noticeably more mindful of the mask regulations. I'd say about 80-90% of people in public were wearing masks and only removed them for the right reasons. People are much more lackadaisical about it in PA. I haven't dined indoors myself, but it seems that people basically just wear the mask through the door as a formality and then hang out maskless inside as long as they want.

To take it to the extreme, my brother was just in WV and said he saw several establishments with "Masks not allowed" signs

I work in WV, live in Ohio. I can tell you this is mostly true. Everyone around here hates the masks. If they have to wear them inside it’s never correct. Half the people won’t wear them inside either. It’s an old population as well. However, the county(Wood) I’m in has only had 504 cases total out of around 84,000 people. Only 6 deaths total and that hasn’t been recently. You may think its extreme but less than 1% has been infected by the virus.

Did they try bleach?

What? You guys don't snort a steady stream of listerine for 30 seconds straight every morning? Sure, make me out to be the weirdo then. Pfft.

That is exactly what i've been saying.  Stop all indoor dining and indoor bars.  Prop up that segment of the economy with targeting stimulus and everyone else lives their life normally, with masks.

We haven't been inside a restaurant, other than to pick up food, since March.

This is shocking. Out here in Arizona every restaurant is open. Everyone wears a mask and just follows the rules. The economy out here is exploding.

I'm a Project Manager for an architectural company that works with residential homes builders. All of them are increasing the 2021 and 2022 forecast by historic numbers. I'm currently hiring two more drafters.

Weird how different things can be. People out here act like covid doesn't exist.

Being inside a restaurant is an unnecessary risk. Why go to an indoor place that requires, by its nature, you and other people around you to remove their masks in an enclosed space?  That’s crazy.
Outdoor eating is good but not great. Takeout is best.
Literally everything else you can do with a mask on and should be open.
In other, more troubling news, my wife’s employer (small to mid size regional bank) just announced 175 layoffs and other cost saving measures. Thankfully she was spared.

Not surprising to hear that the residential market in AZ is projecting to increase.

1) interest rates are super low, which stimulates housing activity in general.  Housing prices in the US have now increased for the 102nd consecutive month.  The market pretty much everywhere has been crazy competitive.
2) the housing market in places where people buy 2nd homes for vacation purposes has seen huge increases since the pandemic started as people with the means to travel are instead choosing to invest in vacation homes as they likely won’t be taking big international vacations for the near term.   As an example, the jersey shore housing market has exploded since April.  The same thing happened after 9/11.  People didn’t want to fly, and as a result there was a higher demand for vacation homes and prices skyrocketed.

I feel the same way. I feel no need to go sit indoors at a restaurant during this time.  I’m happy just ordering takeout.  But I get that everyone’s risk tolerance is different.
We’ve eaten outside twice, but both times it was at off-peak days/times at places with large outdoor spaces, so the nearest people to us were like 20-30’ away.
Stinks about your wife’s company but glad to hear she kept her job.

I guess it depends on the capacity and distancing.  I have gone out a few times  with just my wife and a couple times we took the kids because they’ve been locked up for 8 months and it’s not good for their social-emotional development to be stuck at home for this long.  It’s inhumane honestly.  We were not seated close to anyone as they were limited capacity anyway and we made every effort to limit risk like washing hands and not touching everything and our faces etc.  I’m not saying to pack PJs elbows to asses for Thursday night football this week but you can venture out and live a somewhat normal life without putting yourself at a huge risk.

I haven't eaten in a restaurant since March, I am not going out to eat at a restaurant any time soon, and I'm certainly not taking kids who can't stop touching things and can't keep their hands off their face. We get take-out and we've been taking advantage of food trucks in the neighborhood, since most of their events are cancelled. Same good food, I can eat it in my home, thank you very much.

We do go out as a family, to parks, to playgrounds, trips in the car, etc. Outdoor activities are fine. Eating out in a restaurant isn't all that fun for kids anyway (unless it's Chuck E. Cheese). It's more of a chore for them.

I'm not going to judge people for going to restaurants, or restaurants for opening up indoor dining especially as the weather gets colder. It's definitely an increased risk but IMO can be reasonably mitigated if the right precautions are taken.

I'm personally not going to one until there is a vaccine and cases fall off. Not worth it to me and too many high risk exposures through work. Just not fair to them when I can get take out or wear a jacket and eat outside.

We are pretty much fine with outdoor activities for the kids.  They are both playing soccer; U10 and U6, without masks.  They are both going to school with masks (we have had a few isolated cases in our school district but not enough to close any one school).

But we are not doing trick-or-treating this year.  It sucks and it really sucked to tell them.  But they took it well.  We told them we would do a candy hunt around our house (think easter eggs) and they would both get costumes, spooky movies and smores in the backyard.  They are ok with it.  Saying no was more of a function of awkwardness because we were invited to a halloween party (outdoors) but just didn't think it would be great with tables of food and masks being off in close quarters... and that same group would be galavanting around our neighborhood so we didn't want to encounter them in the evening.

Conversations regarding Thanksgiving and Christmas with our parents is going to suck...... especially if this gets worse, as Osterholm predicts.  Everything is just a f-ing chore... i hate having to plan for f-ing everything and then having a debate about whether it is safe.  But we still aren't doing indoor restaurants.

we haven't eaten in a restaurant since march either...and have no plans to.  we do take-out now & then and it's fine.  we really only get together with family...even though that's a risk too. my kid is doing soccer...masks required except when they're actually in the game....and school...masks required except when they're eating lunch.

no f'ing idea what we're doing for the holidays. i'm thinking we'll do the usual family stuff unless things get really bad in our area.

Same man. I'm really hoping we can still figure something out for Christmas at least. If anything for the kids and grandparents.

I'm going to put a tv at the end of our table at Thanksgiving and zoom with family.

Wow, can't believe you guys have stayed locked down as long as you have...I would go absolutely nuts.  I've been living life as normally as possible, except distancing and wearing a mask.  Doing my best to support our local restaurants but its tough to get a reservation.

I'll do outdoor distanced dining. Otherwise I support them by getting takeout and tipping as if I dined in. I was talking with the owner of Nick's in Broadway awhile back, it's been really really tough for independent restaurants around here. Luckily pretty much all of them have adapted some kind of takeout situation, even the nice restaurants in town.

I would say at this point we're eating out 1-3 times a week in some capacity, either takeout or outdoors. Weather has been friendly enough to do so.

I do not want to go indoors. I'm hoping the propane heat towers will extend the season and that the winter is mild enough that outdoor eating is manageable for the foreseeable future.

My old chief is moving down to Florida. Apparently in the Poconos there are six buyers for every house on the market, so if you’re looking to sell now is the time to do it. IMO credit is going to be hard to come by in a few years so if you’re going to buy now is the time to do it.

My gf is a bartender so I worry, but she’s younger so I don’t worry about her per se, but I’d still prefer not to get it. Since this has started DeSantis has been hell bent on being Trumps favorite governor so we are Phase 3 and municipalities are barred from enforcing masks. Thankfully the private sector is picking up the slack, but when not in a big box store it’s much different. Where I live in Florida I’m lucky if the guy in front of me at the convenience store is wearing a shirt, let alone a mask. What kills me is the machismo about it, but wearing a mask isn’t about you, it’s about others. As a point I always wear a mask. What they don’t get is I work two counties down in a populated area at a business very frequented by the public, so if I were not to wear a mask like them it would be a big deal and it could snowball from there. For as much as I can’t stand the superiority of urbanites, I can’t stand the ignorance of the rural.

It’s tough to not do things, but I try to remind myself that two or three people ago my ancestors thought it a treat to take the cart into town, let alone do the things we are accustomed to.
