When I was visiting her recently, her sister stopped by with a couple of her close friends. The friends all wore masks while they were there, but my aunt didn't and I seriously doubt that she wears a mask around them when at her home. And those people specifically are very careful as well (the friend is a retired doctor and thought she had it at the initial peak but ended up being negative when she was finally able to get tested), but the picking and choosing that just doesn't make sense is frustrating. My mom even comments about how we always wear masks before we enter her house when my wife is a teacher... The selective relaxation is extremely frustrating. We were all having a Zoom party one night a few months back and the conversation turned to anti-maksers, conspiracy theorists, and people that are flouting the public health guidelines. Apparently those people are the scum of the earth, yet it's perfectly okay for my SIL to throw a birthday party at her house or for my MIL to push for a committal to several Christmas events when we don't even know what things will look like a month from now (hint: it won't look good). Rules for thee but not for me is how this apparently works, and if you even dare point out the hypocrisy, the butt hurt gets cranked up to 11. As if navigating family isn't already difficult enough during the holidays.

This year is particularly weird because if you don’t show up for a holiday gathering some people are going to be butthurt about it.
November 17, 20204 yr Ah COVID Thanksgiving... We have invited my dad and his wife over for thanksgiving. If they decide not to take the risk, no hard feelings. I think though, he and I are on the same page, this might be his last Thanksgiving. He's had a massive heart attack this fall that he was lucky to survive and his overall health is not good. These are the decision families are faced with. It's rough on all of us. We may try to go to Maryland to see my Wife's mother Thanksgiving weekend. She lives alone and hasn't left her place since March, so again it's really up to her if she wants us there, and we will see if Baltimore county goes into lockdown. Baltimore city already is.

Also, both of them had to halt their phase 3 trials due to adverse reactions in some patients, but have since resumed them. J&J's Ad26-SARS-COV2 candidate resumed earlier and might have a slight lead on AZ's ChAd-Ox1. After those two, we should be getting word on Novavax's protein subunit Nvx-COV2373 which is maybe the most promising of any so far, and could provide even better efficacy than the already awesome results we've been told about from Pfizer and Moderna. They've got a phase 3 trial in Europe that should be wrapping up in the next couple months so by then we should have 5 candidates having completed phase 3 trials with a good idea of how far they can go to putting a sizeable dent into this ongoing nightmare. The real question is what are the common names going to be for the vaccines? Nobody is going to say, I’m here to get my crv-19ex-An4L shot. do we call it trumpiflu since he created it with his own hands? do we call is bidecillin since he will see to it that we get it safely or Gatezthromyacin since gates will probably make the most money off it somehow?

I thought the pandemic would make things easier this year when it comes to family holiday gatherings. Let each individual family unit decide what they're comfortable with, and if some people show up and others don't... no big deal. Unfortunately, I can already see the expectations mounting (more on the wife's side of the family, but mine will get in on it too). I'm not opposed to people gathering for the holidays... it's the inconsistencies and selective outrage that I have a problem with.

As if navigating family isn't already difficult enough during the holidays. Yup. I even bought a propane heater and suggested that we have dinner in my mom's over-sized garage so we could spread out more and have the doors open a bit to allow ventilation but she shot that idea down immediately. So instead we're going to in separate rooms in the house while we eat and barely be able to see each other. It is just going to be the 5 of us most likely (mom, wife, me, and our 2 kids). I suggested my sister join us but they go to her in-laws where they won't be expected to wear masks so she's not changing her plans (my words and thoughts not hers). My cousin is hosting dinner at her house and sent an invite out to the whole family, even a bigger group than they normally have! Fortunately they understand and don't get upset or offended if people don't go, but it is just crazy.
November 17, 20204 yr My wife is one of five and we’re hosting this year. Everyone decided not to make the trip. Not really sure if that’s just because of Corona though

When my wife's immediate family gets together there are around 20 of us now because of the kids. Public health is limiting indoor gatherings to 10, so we're already double the "allowed" amount. I feel like the entire world will be watching America and Thanksgiving to get an idea of what a post-holiday surge might look like for Christmas.

Well I'm assuming it is a similar invite list to their Easter Dinner which I think is typically around 30-40 people that would show up. There will be a lot fewer people for Thanksgiving just because my family hasn't done big Thanksgiving dinners in many years. Most of my generation does Thanksgiving with our in-laws.

Much less crowded. They may have things that the grocery store is out of too. Grocery shopping I go as early as possible. Get in and get out. Once I get my Thanksgiving stuff I shouldn't have a need to go back anytime soon. I always pack up my desk every night in the event I don't feel good, or we are asked to stay home. My temperature this morning was 94.8. WTH? Something is wrong with that damn thing! Anyway, I can easily keep doing these things for another 6 months. The only time I go out is when I have to take a shared ride bus to the doctor's office if I absolutely have to go. Luckily when I have gone there has been no one on the bus for the most part. And every driver has to wear a mask. I have to sit in the back cuz they strap my wheelchair to the floor so I don't go flying around. The last time I went there was a couple all the way in front of the bus and that was way more than 6 feet. When I had to go to the grocery store to get my flu shot, I didn't see anyone without a mask. Not one person. My mom is really the only one that goes out to get groceries and even she says that there's hardly anybody in Wegmans that doesn't wear a mask. And forget WALMART. If we need something from Walmart we will get it online instead. Thanksgiving and Christmas it's only my parents, my brother and myself.
November 17, 20204 yr Does anyone think that we're actually going to be able to get one of these vaccines by mid December? It sounds like the Mederma one is going to be the one that most of the people in the country take because it doesn't have to be stored on dry ice and can be refrigerated up to 30 days. But in the back of my mind I could see Trump somehow screwing this up and none of us sees any of this until next year.

Not unless you're a paramedic, nurse, doctor, etc. Distribution for us normies won't be in effect until spring/summer time frame. Long after that sheetstain is gone.

I listed to Biden speak last night and to this moment he has not seen or been given the trump plan to execute the distribution. Probably because there is no plan. Let’s be real. It’s just another thing he will fumble and blame on someone else. Biden was not optimistic that we would have the vaccines out before next year. That’s why he’s encouraging the masks and limits, etc. a friend of mine works for Pfizer and also wasn’t optimistic about the distribution last I spoke to him because of the storage and transportation challenges. Let’s also not forget that an announcement of an effective vaccine does not mean it will automatically get fda approval, they still have steps to take and despite pressure from trump during the campaigns they have to be sure this is safe or they open up for massive lawsuits and years of litigation. All it will take is one person to get sick or die from the vaccine and the whole thing crumbles. Then once the fda approves it, you still have the logistics of getting everyone vaccinated. As Biden said, having a vaccine is very different from being vaccinated. All that said, my guess is the vaccines will be ready for mass distribution in the spring at the earliest.

Thankfully, the Moderna candidate is much more stable and doesn't require -70C cold chain distribution. Novavax's will be even more forgiving in that regard.
November 17, 20204 yr Yeah, the media needs to calm down with the vaccine reporting. They keep pimping out these "90/95% effective" headlines, but those are merely the initially reported numbers from the pharmaceutical companies without any context or in-depth data to put things in perspective. Even if these are the true effectiveness rates for the whole population (they're not), it doesn't tell you anything about how long the immunity period is. It could be a few years or a few months. Beyond that, even with a truly effective vaccine, I think, at best, the earliest that we could have enough people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity is probably the middle of 2022.
