They keep pumping these "90/95% effective" stories, but those are merely the initially reported numbers from the pharmaceutical companies without any context or in-depth data to put things in perspective. Even if these are the true effectiveness rate for the whole population (they're not), it doesn't tell you anything about how long the immunity period is. It could be a few years or a few months. Beyond that, even with a truly effective vaccine, I think, at best, the earliest that we could have enough people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity is probably the middle of 2022. Yep and none of the studies have included kids. So we don’t know if there are any damaging side effects for them. There’s also the possibility that the people who didn’t get the virus after taking the vaccine wouldn’t have gotten it anyway because of their normal immune systems fighting it off. So I don’t buy the 90% effective claim anyway

It’ll be interesting to see which one is truly more effective in the real world and if any long term side effects occur. I thought Moderna and Pfizer were both mNRA vaccines? Admittedly, my knowledge on this stuff is pretty limited.

Pfizer vaccine is designed to introduce the spike proteins and trick to your body into creating antibodies without the presence of the dead virus. You would need 2 doses. They Aren’t even sure how long it would be effective for either. moderna works differently. I haven’t read up too much on their ls though but it’s more of a traditional approach is what I took from the snippets

So I don’t buy the 90% effective claim anyway The criteria for both arms was multiple positive PCR tests and an accompanying symptom. Also, the moderna press release stated that of the 94 positive cases, 11 reported severe disease, and all were confirmed as part of the control group (this is critically important as it means that even if it doesn't provide sterilizing immunity in those 5% of patients, it could still greatly reduce the severity of disease.) I agree with the cautious optimism until they publish the actual study with the full dataset, obviously because of the sample size, but so far, this looks like pretty damn good news. For reference, moderna did the same "science by press release" after their Phase I trial completed and it likewise was met with skepticism at the time (rightfully), but then the actual data came out and confirmed everything they'd been saying. And I also think it's more than a coincidence that both mRNA candidates reported very similar efficacy results. We'll see once they release all the data and we have a chance to dig further into the numbers.

They are, both use messenger RNA that provide instructions for the spike epitope which your body can use as a blueprint to generate antibodies for. First of their kind and likely to revolutionize vaccine development. Like I said at the time, the announcement was overshadowed by this sheet show of an election, but this is the far bigger news than Trump getting the boot, and I hate that MF'er more than anyone.

Yeah I think it’s promising results from both companies so far....but obviously small sample sizes and no long term data available

I haven’t read up too much on their ls though but it’s more of a traditional vaccine like the flu vaccine. No, it's also an mRNA candidate, same as BioNTech's. Very few companies are using attenuated or neutralized sars-cov-2 virus as that would be very difficult to scale up and a prohibitive approach given the global demand of literally every human on the planet is going to need it (even if they won't take it.)

Restaurants/bars at 50% capacity, 25% in the city, must be seated in order to be served, must close by midnight. Youth sports cancelled. Severe caution towards any travel. Mandatory telework for government employees. I am still waiting to hear from my employer; I work from home 80% of the time now anyway. But I have several coworkers who never stopped commuting to the office even when they announced mandatory telework in the spring. New restrictions today: Hospital/Nursing Home visitation limited. Mandatory testing for nursing home staff and residents. Asking hospitals to avoid elective procedures, as hospitals are reaching capacity in parts of the state. Bars/restaurants must close by 10:00pm (instead of midnight), take-out and delivery encouraged. Stadiums, pro and collegiate, and racetracks are now closed by governor order. Is everybody else shutting down everywhere?
November 17, 20204 yr So, my cousin threw a sweet 16 birthday party for her daughter apparently, and my parents attended. They said it was safe because everyone wore masks, and the tables were far apart. When they told me my response was "good, I'll get my inheritance sooner." Stupid people gonna stupid.

My youngest bought a house and we went over and painted. Wore masks and painted in different rooms, hung out and talked outside, but it was a risk. Staggered the helpers over the weekend so it was usually only 4 people in the house,. Still, it was a risk.

November 17, 20204 yr Chester County getting ready to roll over into 10K cases. Our deaths are the same count right now. Delaware County doing worse. Delaware's Gov. had a briefing today and also added some restrictions. 10 people gathered in a home, 30% capacity indoor dining. Outdoor limit 50 people. No youth sports effective Dec. 1

November 17, 20204 yr My brother is supposed to be coming up from Virginia for Thanksgiving. He lives with two roommates who went to a get together and one of the people at the party tested positive the day after (healthcare worker - asymptomatic). So now my brother and these two idiots have to quarantine the next week and a half. If one of them tests positive, my brother won't be coming up.

November 17, 20204 yr Yeah, but you are also putting other dinosaurs in your age group at risk, too. Typical response, though, only worried about yourself clearly. Guess what? The pandemic doesn't pause on your whims because you feel like having a social outing. Think about others, for once.
