Just got an e-mail from the kids school.... first confirmed positive case in the student population. <_<

Kinda surprised it took this long, but it still feels a bit unsettling.

Yeah it's a real sheety time to be a parent right now.

I've seen a lot unfortunately

But with tracing and separation protocols the schools around here have at least been able to identify kids that came into close contact that needed testing/quarantine and let the rest of the kids return after sanitizing.  The good news is at least some crappy preliminary data shows that schools haven't been as big of a source of spread compared to other sources. So there's some hope schools may be able to limp through this thing relatively safely.

Hope your kid stays safe.

Thanks.

The e-mail claims that there was no exposure within the school or on the bus, but who knows how long they were carrying it prior to being tested.

I'm sure everything will likely be fine, but it still sucks. We're in a fairly rural area and up until the last couple of weeks everything seemed to be pretty manageable in regards to Covid. That has gone out the window recently though with case numbers soaring.

It really makes you start second-guessing the decisions you've had to make, that's for sure.

Yep, on a daily basis

It seems brutal.

This sheet better be over in the next 8 months cause I'm hopefully joining your ranks by then. Not being able to attend any of the prenatal visits is a tough enough pill to swallow.

Yarp.  Still way too early to feel confident or think too far ahead but of course that's easier said than done

We found out A staff member at my wife’s school tested positive.  They won’t identify this person and aren’t requiring any quarantines for teachers at this point.  Kids aren’t back yet. It’s a crap show

Oh man, congrats! You'll love being a dad, kids are the ish. Can't imagine what our lives would be like without them. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for you guys. Presumably your wife would have to wait until after delivery to get vaccinated, but you would still be able to get it at least.

I’ve gotten a few e-mails about students who tested positive at my kid’s school.  They have a built-in online week after Thanksgiving that they planned for months ago.

Thanks friend.  Hasn't really sunk in yet.  She's an OB and I'm a pediatrician, we have 5 nieces and nephews and most of our friends have kids, this was planned and yet we still feel wildly unprepared.

Yeah the vaccine will be a question mark.  Shes a "frontline worker" and the vaccines women get during pregnancy haven't really shown any issue.  But with the newness of this one and lack of pregnant women in the studies...who TF knows.  It will be an interesting decision.  If anyone wants to come visit they're sure as crap getting it beforehand at the very least.

My life isn't very exciting now anyways.  As long as that lil Fer can handle some travel in those early years it's not like my social life is gonna take a massive hit.

Congrats!

It's amazing how resilient little ones can be when you travel. We took our oldest on a cruise just before her first birthday and she was awesome. It just sucks lugging strollers and diapers and toys and everything else all over the f'n place. Once you get your head around that part, take a few deep breaths, and lower your vacation standards a tad, everything else just kinda works. That probably isn't a ringing endorsement of traveling with kids  but honestly it's not that bad.

2 rules:

1. Keep your kids off redeyes. Us normal people would like to sleep

2. No kids in 1st class

Oh -- and CONGRATS! In all seriousness, best of luck to you and the wife.

Congrats DEagle7.  I have lots of parenting advice to give out, but I’ll spare you until the kid is born.

There are small cohorts mostly those with severe needs that have been in, but the gen pop is not.  And we have decided to keep our kids home since I work from home.  They are trying to keep schools open and basically telling the lies that it’s the staff, not the kids that are seeing the most cases but it’s just a matter of time.  Of course kids are getting it, They aren’t back yet, but once they are you know it’s going to spread.

Yeah that's the issue as I don't believe any of the trials, at least not for Moderna or Pfizer, have included pregnant women or children under the age of 12. But if she's at a high risk of exposure, maybe it becomes a judgment call.

When we were in Thailand we were kinda shocked at the number of European couples there with young kids/toddlers.  Gave us some hope at least!  But yeah we've accepted that the days of backpacking trails in the Himalayas and taking hallucinogens on south pacific beaches are probably over...for now

With the number of miles I have built up from the wedding getting cancelled and no traveling with COVID the lil fella is going to be in business class until at least kindergarten. Sorry 😬

And thank you.

Yup it's looking like that will be what happens. Luckily she works for a big academic hospital so we'll have plenty of resources to lean on.  And someone else in her practice is probably knocked up too (lesbian couple who did scheduled IUI).  So it'll be tough but at least it'll be a well-informed shot in the dark.

I have long believed that airlines are missing a real opportunity to offer "child free" flights on business routes (LA-NYC as an example) during the week. I would happily pay extra not to have to listen to the crying, whining, screaming, etc. Guess I'd have to also ban Giuliani and Trump.

If you bring a kid under 8 on a redeye or into first class, you should be jailed.

"Everybody needs to stay apart!", they say as everyone gathers inside stores.

I already work in a grocery store so my risk stays the same. It's starting to get packed in my stores as well. It's gonna get ugly

Then be less poor if you want to have kids.
