This makes you a pandemic expert? What, exactly, do you do?

If we tested, quarantined and contact traced, exactly as the White House has been doing all along, the situation here would be much different.

Instead the president and vice-president don't wear masks and give out horrific medical advice.

HEALTHCARE WORKERS INFECTED BY SARS-CoV-2

JAMA Network
May 21, 2020
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid 2019) Infection among Healthcare Workers and Implications for Prevention Measures in a Tertiary Hospital in Wuhan China.

The investigation took place at Tonji Hospital in Wuhan China.  A 7000 bed (cannot begin to imagine a 7000 bed hospital) tertiary hospital.

Of the 9684 healthcare workers 110 became infected with Covid-19, an infection rate of 1.1%.  Most of the infected, 71.8% were females.
It was appreciated that healthcare workers were at a high infection risk. The infection rate in the Wuhan public domain was 0.18%. This is a very low number. The infection rate, of mostly symptomatic patients, in the United States (that is the population that we have primarily tested) is 0.48%. I am somewhat skeptical of a basal rate of 0.18% Covid-19 positive patients in the public domain of Wuhan China.

Of the 9684 healthcare workers, 3110 (32%) were considered first line workers, employed in fever clinics or wards with Covid-19 positive patients. Of these first line workers, 17 (0.54%) became infected. Of the non-first line workers 93 (1.4%) became infected. One healthcare worker out of the 110 covid-19 positive died.

Main Infectious Source:
1.  contact with indexed patients 50.1%
2.  contact with infected colleagues 10.9%
3.  community spread 12.4%

Many of the healthcare workers were infected (60%) in the early stages of the epidemic when little was known and proper PPE was not worn. If you take this into consideration, it would appear that 10 healthcare first line workers became infected after the institution of proper PPE,  bringing the infection rate to 0.32%.  Of these infected first line healthcare workers, only 7.8 were infected by patient care transmission, ending with a 0.28% infection rate among first line healthcare workers, somewhat higher than that seen in the community.

The findings of this presentation are consistent with the findings at Mass General Brigham Hospital which Dr. Gawande discussed.  Illustrating yet again, the value of proper PPE, which, for a population at large where the prevalence rate of Covid-19  is anywhen from 1% to 6%, would be surgical masks when physical distancing of six feet is not possible.

Obesity and Outcomes in Covid-19.  When an Epidemic and a Pandemic Collide
Dr. Carl Lavie
Professor of Medicine
Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation
University of Cleveland School of Medicine

42% of the American population as of 2018 had a BMI greater than 30 and 9% had a BMI greater than 40.

We are aware of an increased representation of obese individuals in the Covid-19 positive population and that morbidity and mortality is increased in this group when infected with Covid-19.  There are conditions associated with obesity that may predispose to an increased susceptibility to Covid-19 and also increased acuity of the disease:
1.  Increased incidence of hypertension (associated with increased susceptibility to Covid-19)
2.  Increased incidence of diabetes (associated with increases susceptibility to Covid-19)
3.  Increased incidence of Congestive Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation exacerbating respiratory difficulties associated with Covid-19
4.  Increased incidence of restrictive lung disease exacerbating pulmonary problems associated with Covid-19
5.  Increased incidence of renal disease, complicating the course of the disease
6.  An increased state of inflammation secondary to cytokines manufactured in adipose cells, increasing the acuity of disease.

If you are over a BMI of 30, you are in a vulnerable population group and I strongly recommend that you wear a mask at all times when out in the public domain.

Oh yeah?  Not to downplay your 'experience' but that does not make your opinion on how to handle this pandemic any more important. Especially since I've seen you offer very little aside from "nobody could have done better" which is nonsense. Lies and misinformation from this administration is a good place to start. I don't need any biomedical sciences experience to know that.

I mean, China even being in that list at all is a stretch.

So does that mean you believe the numbers from other countries?

Southern Maryland had a huge car meet last night that was broken up by police. Possibly around 500 cars

That’s happened 3 or 4 times in redneck parts of Sweden in the last week or so.

Ok, Paul.  This distills to " your experience means nothing because the administration lies".

While Toaster bases his opinion on one statistic that does not account for any other variables such as age demographics, general health or anything but death rate.

Everybody should just let their politics rule their opinion.

You should preface "I work in biomedical research” with "I ride Trump’s jock.”

Oh and for years in the old forum, I have stated how broken the FDA approval process was and how the FDA has routinely refused to approve anything based on approval by other nations regulatory bodies.  (Hint: This magnified the mistake on tests made by CDC).

Second, the majority of facilities that produce the materials for tests are in Asia.  That is the next very important issue because the tests being made we soaked up by those countries.

Essentially the cupboard was laid bare for any administration which limits what can be done.

No, because I have stated Trump mishandled this every time.

crap. Apparently NC had a spike in confirmed cases that is the highest it's ever had.

You should have expected reports like the above, not because it's true but because they (Bill Gates and Co.) want total control over the population and the only way they can get control is to scare the sheet out of the population, so expect to hear more outrageous spike numbers by those states that entered Phase 1 early...............BOOO!!!

Then why argue the death toll would have been the same regardless? It’s the defense from people who still revere Dear Leader despite his incompetent leadership.

Maybe we should just round up all the COVID positive people and drive them off the edge of the earth

For some reason it brings me so much joy knowing other countries have rednecks.  Part of my wife's family is from the black forest and when we went to visit it basically felt like a more scenic central PA.
