I agree with GB. We should sign Smith. We have the Cap room and there are few LB's available next draft. There are lots of CB's, DE's and a few DT's if we wish to go that route. I say Sign Smith and draft a CB, DE and possibly LB or DT with that 3rd pick.... Then we have the makings of a decent defense next year. Not top rate but at least something that can stop other offenses once in awhile. Then the following draft we fill in some more holes and draft to fill in for aging vets....

What if he agrees to a restructure? Are we certain of what amount we would be hit for?

He's due the $16.2 mil if we claim him.  It's injury guaranteed, so there is no way he isn't going to take a deal without getting that in his pocket.   Can we restructure...sure, do we want to add another contract like that right now... where we push more money down the road?  I would pass. But I'm not looking for a quick fix either, I think this is going to take a few years.

If he was 29-30 I would agree, but here is  proven YOUNG player with lots of miles left. I would make this investment. There are ZERO "hot commodity" LB's next draft(if we even take one)

I'll pass... wasn't good enough for Dallas at that price.  They wouldn't let him go otherwise.  Because of his prime age....etc.  the fact there was zero trade value??    Dallas tried to trade him,  not one team would pay a 7th rounder for a 26 year old LB?

I'm not making this move based on the current desperation....which is the reasons I'm hearing on here.

His contract... 7.2 , 9.2 , 11 mil, 11 mil, and 12.35 mil.    If you have patience and wait a year or two... then you can spend that same money on a top notch LB that can be 26 in two years... and save the $16 mil of cap space that would roll over.

I get what you guys are saying... but I think the concept of the rolling cap escapes a lot of people.   Sure at $11 mil he could be less expensive in 2023... but he would have already used $16 mil at that point.  And for me,  this team isn't going anywhere the next 2 years.  I want to build it up the right way, no quick fix.  Already too much cap space invested in things that aren't going to help us win.

New Details Emerge From Cowboys Decision To Release Jaylon Smith (msn.com)

If Smith would be a fit for the Eagles you can bet Howie will look the other way.

Our history with Ex-Cowboys is not a good one. That maybe shouldn't disqualify him out of hand but something to keep in mind.

Philadelphia Eagles[edit]

In 2021, Gannon was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles[5] as their defensive coordinator.[6][7] Gannon brought to the team, his revolutionary swiss cheese defense. It is based on the theory that you expose so many holes, that teams are confused as to which weaknesses to expose first

LOL WHY? because THEY signed WHAT 3 top draft LB'S? And we drafted......??????? They never said he wasn't good enough, this is a $ move lol

yes, gotta keep up with bogus thought patterns lol

I would assume they wanted more than a 7th? They needed to see their draftees pan out(and they did),so NOW they are fine with losing him

I thought it was about improving your team to the best of your ability, through FA,the draft or development. IDK we've been "desperate" for Howie to get LB's and CB's forever. Now one comes along and you want to pass. I don't have a staff, but if he is WORTH the money(and I have it),then I make my team better. It's not like we spent it on a QB or WR (like we usually have to do). of course we can debate if he is worth the money, but sometimes you have to stop penny pinching and get an actual talented player in here. Is he that? IDK,he seems to be,but at least I take a look

It is based on the theory that you expose so many holes, that teams are confused as to which weaknesses to expose first. Deploying an update to Philadelphia Eagle defensive coordinator legend Jim Johnson's "bend but don't break" approach, Gannon theorizes that by both bending and breaking, he can lull offenses into a false sense of security. Once the opposing team reaches a lead of 30 points or more, they may play second or even third stringers, allowing a slim chance that with the right combination of onside kicks and garbage time points, the Eagles might lose by 15 or less. It is entirely possible that against other NFC East teams, this strategy may even result in outright victory.      Here's the whole thing lol. OMG!! his theory works, all except the fact they aren't playing 3rd stringers and they are kicking our arse LOL. Probably a wiki edit by some Dullaz fan

IDK I believe wiki can be edited by about anyone?(like a hater) I can't believe we would hire someone like this, sooooo

Most are better than what we have, more D&D failure(draft and development). But really there are only a handfull of LB's next draft. After round 2 even THAT talent falls off

panthers got him for a 6th rounder.....

Right, he isn't good enough for the money. He is the exact age you want to keep players, not get rid of them.  Not one team offered a 7th round pick?    Save the $$$

Ok...  you want to sell something... you don't get the price you want, but if you could get a dollar, why would you not take it?

Rolling cap.... it's a concept that needs to be understood.  It's not , you spend the money or you lose it like before,  with the rolling cap you have to decide if it's worth saving for later.  For me, I would.  The cap space is not that great at the moment.  The team needs a 2016 season to set up a 2017. Really since they lack the foundation that was already here in 2016,they need 2 of those seasons. Not only to develop the younger guys,  but to let the older guys move on.  Jalen Smith at age 29 and already costing them $27 mil total from 2021-23 , I don't think is a smart move...get the 26 year old free agent in 2023.  Much cheaper cap wise, and now you have longer foundation piece.

I believe that if you sign him ...it also comes with the 9.2 mil injury guarantee for next year.   Not the time for this type of investment yet.

Why they feel the need to bail on him. Why nobody else will want to take that on. I agree with your take. Think he clears waivers. Then it’s up to where he wants to play(obviously of available teams).

SO,we paid mailiata, but we're not paying for a defensive player. Sounds like Howie. I think he got gun shy after the "dream team" debacle. he needs to remove those blinders again

Wait up here now because we cut off talks with Goedert.

Wow….can’t believe what I’m hearing….you actually want to clear cap space now. Hell has frozen over!

Our cap has been screwed! Just bad …and worse the more you dig into it. This team isn’t contending for anything real right now. Siri and Hurts are probably screwed. Don’t even like that we’ve moved money like we keep doing towards the future. Be nice if we actually were paying up more than the average salary on some big contracts now or next year and have rollover going forward. I don’t even care if we have glaring holes. All about the future and what we can do then. Tired of being stuck in this hole of paying guys for two years ago play today. Flip that and imagine what kind of contending windows you could open.

Panthers traded for Gilmore. Might have already been mentioned. He can’t play against us at least.

Feels like a few of our players are beginning to become frustrated with these coaches. Arguably our best player on each side of the ball. Sanders you can just feel bubbling over(understandably). Fletch now is dodging saying this D just isn’t good for him. Pretty much said it but instead stopped just short and stated he’d be a professional and do whatever’s asked. Ouch….don’t have to read to hard between the lines here.
