Signing was really low though.

Not at all... because again...HURTS WAS UNDER CONTRACT THIS SEASON.   So he gets a nice raise PRIOR  to the extension.   It's designed to keep the cap hits low initially.

He gets paid...the Eagles get the cap space.

See.. however you want to spin it... he gets paid.  As Hugh Douglass said for weeks on the radio... "it's not Hurts job to take less money... it's up to Howie to design the contract that limits the cap hits"

No discount...player was paid.  Just structured for low cap hits for the team.

Most players are under contract the last year of their rookie deal when extended. These are the comparisons. A Rb got near the same signing bonus money.

McCaffrey on a four year deal …a RB. Got just a couple mil less ….under contract from his rookie deal…same way all the good players do.

Eagles sign UDFA Michigan State LB Ben Vansumeren. VanSumeren is an athletic freak at 6’2 240 lbs. Had VanSumeren been invited to the NFL Combine, his 42.5-inch vertical would have been the highest and his 10-foot, 11-inch broad would have been the longest among participating linebackers. Additionally, his 29 bench press reps would have tied for the most and his 4.40-second 40-yard dash time would have been the second-fastest among linebackers at the Combine. VanSumeren was Michigans starting FB before transferring to Michigan State and switching to LB, so possibly some dual versatility if the Eagles want to add some FB packages.

Seems he has that little touch of "nasty"

SO thats where he gets his nasty, from being a HS DT. Seems he kept that when playing FB. I think he would be great plopped in the MLB slot and we can run a trick p[lay with him

Which RB ... 2nd round pick or lower ( key element here, because of the much lower rookie contract) ...which one got that bonus before contract expired?

What are you trying to say.... are you desperately trying to say Hurts didn't get paid his cash?     He got paid.  There is no way around it.

It's not his intangibles as to why the contract is written with the low cap hits.  He didn't sacrifice pay.  His agent didn't do a bad job.

It was great business from both sides.  They each got what they wanted.

And he was under 1st round rookie deal...  wasn't he drafted top 10?

GM to player... " you should take less money to help the team win"

Agent:  "F#@$ you. It's not our job to manage the cap... pay up!"

Result... player gets his cash.  Good GMs know how to structure contract for lower cap hits.  That's on the GM...player just interested in cash.

Now....player can obviously benefit by having a lower cap hit so more money to spend on better teammates.   But absolutely not their job to sacrifice cash.

The agent won't let that happen.

It can be a foreign concept to the novice. The person who doesn't understand numbers.  Doesn't get th concept of cash and cap hit being 2 different things.   How dummy years,  dead cap, bonus prorated over multiple years....    how these things can make a cash number into many different cap hit numbers.

For some.... 5 years 50 mil is simply 10 mil per year.   No concept of how that 50 mil can be spread out over possibly 9 years.

No concept of how 5 mil of dead money in 2030 is much less than 5 mil here in 2023.

Some novices see dead money and think.... that's actually cap space we could have had.  They don't get that an amount of dead cap, usually creates a larger amount of actual cap space.

It takes a little reading and a little business sense.  But it's not really hard to grasp the basics.

I think he has a slim chance to make the roster...but could be a special team player if he does.  Probably a practice squad guy.   But for the low investment... could be nice reward.

He seems worth giving a chance to

So why does that mean his and most every other player gets almost the same amount of cash in signing as Hurts? Nobody here confusing cap and cash. Four year contract at the lowest paying position getting nearly the same signing as the highest paid player.

Ok... it's like having to explain to a 5 year old....simply because you have an agenda to try to show Hurts as taking less money and doing the Eagles a favor.

Hurts was a 2nd round pick....CMC was a 1st.   The leverage CMC has is that he is already set to receive a higher salary in his last year of rookie deal  Hurts was peanuts.

I'll let you research.... find a RB or QB ...drafted outside of round 1... then look at the signing bonus.

You don't seem to grasp the concept that Hurts scheduled to make peanuts this year.... he is signing an extension with all those guarantees and new money.

You are desperate here.  Why?

Which QB... outside of round 1... got a better deal than Hurts?

And think about it...  year 2 of these deals is usually peanuts... big signing bonus year 1,  not much pay year 2.

Hurts has 40 mil cash year 2.

I'll give you 4 examples of QBs outside of round 1.     Cousins... Dak... Dalton... and Brees.   I was looking at Brady but rules were different in prior CBA.. he got slight raise year 3 ...can't do that anymore...needs to be after 3 years.

I'm rounding to neatest 100k

Cousins... year 4 he made $800k

Dak ... year 4 he made $2 mil

Dalton... he actually signed extension going into year 4 like Hurts...

Year 4 = $18 mil

Year 5 = $7 .2 mil, ... year 6 = 10.7 mil ... year 7 = 13.3 mil... year 8 = 13.9 mil

Brees...  signed with Saints year 6

Year 6 = 22 mil

Year 7 = 3 mil...  year 8 = 5 mil

Same cycle 3 more times

Year 9 = 12.9 mil  .... year 10 = 6.6

Year 12 = 40 mil ....  year 13 = 10 mil

Year 16 = 31 mil ... year 17 = 13 mil

The point is ... Dak and Cousins...they played year 4 for peanuts.   They were tagged.    Hurts got paid ASAP...big raise this year of 20 mil

Dalton signed same time...  had the signing bonus and then made way less than half year 2.

Brees..  signing bonus ... really small 2nd year

I mean... if instead of Hurts getting $24 mil now and 40 mil year 2....  if you prefer $45 mil at signing and $19 mil year 2.

If that is what you want to base your argument for St. Jalen.   His big sacrifice... then ok.

Dude got paid... no way around it.  No leverage...got record New money, guarantees and no trade clause.   Phenomenal deal for him.

When you see Lamar ... $260 mil.   Remember he was already guaranteed $32.5 mil.     Take that $32.5 mil off of any " new money"  or " additional guarantee"   he already had it.

He has the " fluff deal" which you can see it trying to look like the same 5 years but $1 mil more per year than Hurts.

To the educated person, knowing what he already had in his pocket... they know Hurts is getting a better deal of new and guaranteed money.

Kudos to Hurts... for waiting until next year to get the higher amount than this year.

His sacrifice saved the Eagles 3 mil in cap space this year.  Of course they would have saved that money next year....so it would be a wash anyway.

But hey... we have a need to make a dude getting quarter of a billion dollars look like he is doing the team a huge favor. St. Jalen in da house!

St.Jalen of Houston.     Only needs one more miracle to qualify for canonization.   The first miracle was getting the Tennessee GM not to pay AJ.  The 2nd Music City miracle.
