We have the benefit of a potentially really strong draft this year to help offset the contractual downsides.

But ideally building up from a 4 win team you shouldn’t have such baggage to carry years later while trying to actually contend.

That’s where some fans that slurp everything Rosie does as brilliant miss. The issue is don’t have the money. So that’s the problem needed to overcome.

Easily versions where not such backloaded contracts and dead money would have this team affording LB and RB without issue. Cheapest positions to afford even.

The thoughts of improving on a contending team the next season just aren’t even considered I guess for most here.

I think of how decades ago…the contending teams were switching up adding that top corner to get them over the top. Wish that was what position we were in instead. Especially considering the main baggage stems from a lame 2020 season.

The biggest weakness at LB is just lack of investment. The position group is so low on paper priorities …the weakest room on the team…after P.

On the field ... what are your observations on the LBs this camp... what do you see as their biggest weakness

First observation is both starters left.

On the field... in this camp.  What have you seen so far?

Of Epps and Harris in 2022 as the only legit S options? Terrible! So bad…Rosie had to fix his glaring mistake by forcing a trade. If Ceedy Duce wasn’t available? Would have traded for some other player.

So again... in 2022... where would you rank the Eagles S position among the rest of the league?

If I’m planning against our D…I would run at Reddick and any of those LBs. With passing focused on attacking the LB also.

How would you attack Dallas?

It's interesting ... I've been getting Dallas fan pages in my Facebook feed.   It would be interesting for them to hear you complain about the salary cap management as an Eagles fan.

I was cracking up reading some. " highest revenue team, there is no way Jerry can be that bad every year managing the cap"  ... lol.

They have been in cap hell every year for the longest time...  then you could come in.... like the rich girl complaining that they didn't have all the colors of the $5000 handbags she was shopping for.

Dallas definitely invested in RB and LB over the years.  The article was about how Jerry said they couldn't pay Martin because Parsons is going to be the highest paid defensive player soon.

The fans were all over how Dallas screws up the cap each year.    I couldn't imagine that.   You see some comments and you really see ignorance from their fans.   I saw one where they think the Eagles cheat when it comes to the cap.   Lol.

Mailata got married. He will be distracted,so no way can we shoot for a SB

Good call

It happenrd to Wentz

I sure hope Mailata doesn't mess up and get pregnant.

Dickerson is probably not 100% due to tying the knot.    The weddings of the left side of the OL has to factor into the game plan for 2023.  Throw in Toth with some bad snaps.... this makes it hard to really observe who will be the main punt returner.

This puts more pressure on Hurts now.  He has to run a new offense with a couple of newlyweds on the left side.

Am I the only one who sees this?  Combine these things with overpaying Chuck Bednerik in 1955... and it makes for an uphill battle.

Let's point out the way that the Eagles have handled QB since Howie returned at GM.

1.  Sam Bradford was the QB... got a mid 1st round pick for him.

2.  Unloaded DeMarco Murray, Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonzo to help move up to get Wentz

3.   Got Foles back cheap.

4.  Wentz/ Foles win him a SB... do absolutely nothing since for anyone else.

5. Got the top comp pick for Foles.

6.  Got a 1st and 3rd for Wentz...  which got flipped for Carter,  Dean, next year's 2nd from the Saints,  and helped us land Smith and AJ Brown.

7. Drafted Hurts late in round 2.

8. Have Hurts under contract for the next 4 years at a combined $73 million cap hit.   In comparison Daniel Jones will have $130 mil cap hit in same 4 years, and Dak has $85 mil cap hit for the next 2 years.

The QB is the most important position.  How much you invest in the position might be even more important.

Howie was able to get Two mid 1sts, and two 3rd round picks in return for Bradford, Foles and Wentz, only invested a late 2nd round pick and will incur less than $80 mil of combined cap hits for 7 years of Hurts.

If only he could manage the cap so he could spend on LB and RB.  Then we might see good results like the other NFC teams have shown since he took over back in 2016.

How about looking at the last decade of the Eagles drafts... and what's on the roster.   Obviously we had to draft well to make up for poor cap management.

....Lane was drafted in round 1 of 2014.

1. Between Lane and Dallas Goedert ( drafted round 2 of 2018) ...the Eagles drafted 36 players.  Barnett is the only one left.

2.  Between Lane and Devonte Smith ( drafted round 1 in 2021)  ... the Eagles drafted 56 players.

Barnett.... plus Goedert, Maddox, Sweat, Mailata,  Hurts, Driscoll, Quez, Wallace and Bradley... are on the roster.

Analysis...   since pick Lane... basically 2014-2020...  7 drafts.... 56 players... you have  Hurts, Goedert, Mailata, Maddox and Sweat as the only players that really contribute.

Very poor results strictly from draft.

With poor draft results, the managing of the cap has had to make up the difference in bringing in outside pieces to help.

Obviously that's the thing the Eagles have done better to create the 2nd best results ( next to KC)  in the last 7 years since moving on from Chip.

The excellent cap management,  in comparison to the rest of the league, ( which is the only comparison that matters) should remain a constant.   If the Eagles can draft well in addition to the cap management,  they should have some sustainable success going forward.

Really any idiot can understand 2 things regarding the Eagles in comparison to the rest of the league.

1.  They managed the cap well.

2. They had very poor draft results over the long haul.

Well that’s flawed logic. Previously we had four Dline strictly one gap penetrating. Gannon and assumptions about Desai are more covering for the LBs to be clean to make plays. Eagles have always prioritized the pass rush to facilitate the D success. But more than just one way to get things done. You know I just am enamored with Fred Warner. Watching any game where he’s on the field and you couldn’t possibly convince a single person that LB don’t matter. But can’t prioritize every position and player. So I can see your point and position about not over investing in the LBs. But how I’m seeing Desai D …it’s designed for the LBs to be the guys free to make the run stuffing tackles. On the passing front: if you have a dominant pass rush going…how would offenses plan on dealing with that? The obvious plan would be quick passing attack getting the ball out before the rush can get there. So the mid level pass coverage becomes absolutely crucial.

Once again it's not FLAWED logic,it is LOGIC,we DON'T spend at LB. Name me one BIG investment at the position in the last 10 years(not draft picks)

17 hours ago, cunninghamtheman said:

Basically as an OC the whole middle of the field would be the target. Nothing scary about our S either. I’m optimistic about the position group. But nothing proven to scare any O away from going there.

As I keep saying(over and over again to no avail) Howie loves his pass rush and if there is no time for the QB he's not getting the ball to the center of the field. Force the panic swing pass. It's what we have always done

But last year I wanted to win it all. So I was critical of anything that wouldn’t allow that to be the outcome. This year is similar. Rosie backloaded contract ways I’ve been concerned of the obvious downward trajectory after the SB season. It was an obvious roadblock for 2018. Even more for 2019. 2020 wheels fell off. So situation could be compared now to that.

No comparison at all. Remember how Howie turned around his draft picking???? Those years were loaded with boo boos(like you boy Reagor). last 3 drafts have been stellar. Change my mind. No comparison at ALL

You're forgetting about the RG and 4th string center.

We really need an upgrade
