Another Rd 2 WR I've heard nothing about

The Sleeper

Amon-Ra St. Brown

Southern Cal

6-1, 195

Hands: 9 1/8 inches

40-time: 4.51 seconds

Vertical jump: 38 ½ inches

225 bench: 20 reps

Fennell’s take: "His dad was a former Mr. Universe. He had his kids lifting weights when they were 3-4 years old. And for everything physical and athletic that his dad had them doing, his mom made them do academic stuff. He and his brothers all speak multiple languages. His older brother, Equanimeous, plays for the Packers. His younger brother, Osiris, plays wide receiver at Stanford.

"He had some of the most diverse receiver production I’ve ever seen. He can win in the slot, outside the numbers and in the backfield. Last year, they had a running back shortage against Colorado and put him in the backfield and handed it to him. He ran for a 30-yard touchdown. He can get yards after the catch. He excels on the jump stuff on third down and own-the-field stuff. He’s very competitive at the catch point.

"He’s a sleeper for a number of reasons. Playing on the west coast, you don’t hear about those guys as much. And he didn’t have tons and tons of production. Just 41 catches last season. He was overshadowed by Michael Pittman in 2019 and has had a variety of quarterbacks throwing to him the last two years.

"A lot of people see him strictly as a slot guy. But I think he can be more than that. He reminds me of [the Bengals’] Tyler Boyd. He’s used primarily in the slot, but they move him outside in the red zone and throw him fades and he wins at the catch point. So I think he’s a guy who can do a lot more at the next level than he did at USC.”

Round projection: 1-2

The Jones re-run lol. Then we'll keep him a few years and let him walk so he can go succeed elsewhere

Well that speaks to coaching as well (especially since he played OK after leaving).  WIth the change in the entire coaching staff, hopefully player development isn't as bad as it was under the previous regime.

No he was injured

4.5 is pretty slow at WR. Needs to be in the low 4.4s IMO. I suppose he could be ok as a slot guy. IDK much about him either

You'll excuse me if i'm skepical of USC WRs

IMO this is the problem. Someone needs to whack Howie upside da haid and learn how to evaluate your skill positions(although they all require skill you know what I mean). I understand building the lines is important, but they seem to do it by sacrificing other positions CONSISTENTLY(as you said)/ This is what makes me pull my draft hair out. We DID go WR last year(shocking),and we did with Agholor, and I can't say with the trash team we had if the reagor pick was good or not. I fear Howie will look at less than stellar numbers and pull back to more conservative(lineman). Most  from what I see are we really suck at round 1,2 choices. It seems Howie tries to outsmart himself. We do very well with UDFA's and late picks, but those first few are the ones that set your team apart. I think Howie "pretends" to know, but always covers himself in FA's in the secondary and at RB usually. If Howie really wants to be a good drafter,he needs to take some time every year and go with the scouts who scout those position and see what attributes they look for. I'm sure they 'report" to him,but at decision time do you take someone elses advice or your own? And I think that's where the bottleneck lies because Howie may know linemen more than CB's and I believe he THINKS he knows more than he actually does. If Howie would go to pro days(or at least some) he would have a better idea of which CB or LB fits this team on a PERSONAL level, not the advice of others. His gut tell him to take a lineman because those are more familiar to him and I feel the WR picks(really the only round 1 skill positions we've had for awhile) are more out of necessity and relying again on others(maybe Lurie tells him I want a WR in here). So that's what I see. That Howie thinks he knows more than he does,or he is ordered to take a WR in 1 because every year we get the FA secondary players, maybe a LB,maybe a RB because Howie is not comfotable enough with himself to choose those positions over others. Just a point, how long has it been since our round 1 or 2 picks were REAL difference makers?. Solid is good, but you need those stand outs from time to time and those are they guys we are NOT getting. This draft we need to get back to solid, that is understandable and we'd better get it done because next year is setting up for those top difference maker players you need to go into the playoff zone.Once we have a solid team,Howie fails/failed to go get those difference making players, thus we are always solid, but middle of the road. Even bad teams have studs, yet we have zero of those(maybe Ertz and Wentz were) and IMO therein lies the problem. So rebuild, get back to solid and make sure you are set up for next years influx of ,what we all hope to be, STUDS

That's a lot,  but I think you miss my point,  just like how I was trying to explain to do a mock draft and then trade the players afterwards...so the numbers don't matter.

This positional priority goes back to Kotite's last year. Mid 1990s.   You keep focusing on Howie...  he came in 15 years afterwards.   It's not about evaluating the position players either, it's the overemphasized value ( to a fault ) on the position.

Also.. I will respectfully try to disagree with this myth that you think we are so good at UDFA and late round picks.

First, again with the example of 2013-17...5 years of drafts.   We have Lane, Seumalo and Barnett ( Ertz if he stays)  two 1st rounders, 3rd rounder and Ertz is a 2nd rounder.      No late picks remaining, idk about any of UDFAs?  But I don't think so.

Second... using this draft,  just look at the numbers.  We have 4 picks in the first 2 days.  If 2 of them pan out, it's 50% success.  3 will be 75%.    But 7 picks as of now on day 3 and many more UDFAs.  With UDFAs coming and going all the way up until the season starts....  let's say 4 guys stick.       You would think we have better success later... I just think it's a much larger pool of players, Way more than 4 from the first 2 days of the draft.

So I don't think our batting average is better , just taking way more swings!

He could have made an interception and people say ..look at that success because they want to have that in their head.    Similar to how some harp on a positive thing for Hurts even though he was pretty bad overall.

The first part: exactly! The second part: are you kidding me? Have you been preaching how we are ready to make a Super Bowl run? No, of coarse not. The Oline was a disaster. Nothing there to trust last year. Throwing for over 340 yards in his second and third start was huge as a passer. Near impossible. A guy picking up as many yards on the ground as he does shouldn’t have to throw for that many yards. A QB that runs for fifty yards should be able to get the job done with 200 yards passing. I don’t cate all that much how you get it done. More ways than one to skin the cat. Give him a team...and he’ll win!

https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/players-roster/jalen-hurts/   SO what happened the other 3 games?(2.5 or whatever)? It's got to be consistent not hot/cold as I can attest to in TB with Winston

He went against the best defense in the league(arguably) in the Saints. I refuse to defend Hurts from the Tank Game. The team was setup to fail. Tom Brady himself would have looked like a rookie.

Weak sauce anybody trying to use week 17 against Hurts is pumping an agenda. Be a hater if you want. I’m not stooping to those levels though.

So you’d compare the weapons in Tampa to our team last season? Especially the guys Hurts was dealing with.  Don’t think it’s remotely comparable.

Are we going to act like he didn’t do it vs two of the worst Ds in football and was completely destroyed by Dallas D in the 2nd half??? We going to ignore the accuracy issues??? The lack of pocket presence???

You love looking at that base stat line of 340 yards didn’t throw of 55% in all but 1 game??? Threw 4 ints in 4 games fumbled 6 times???

I don’t care if he was throwing to 3rd stringers in the tank game 7/20. Hurts was rated worse then CJ Berthard of SF let that sink in

Anyone who is ignoring how bad hurts was last seals is pumping an agenda... You don’t even have to use week 17 he was terrible

Team was terrible. He made some egg salad out of some broken eggs.

But I’m not going to act like he was great. Just a solid starting point from which I could work.

  • Author

Improve the team. That’s the main thing. He needs to work on his accuracy. I don’t see that as much of an issue from a guy that appears to work as hard as he does.

  • Author

But yes I’ve seen and heard enough to make me want to see more. He’s a leader. Don’t think he’s got a ceiling of MVP or anything....but give him a team and he can get the ball to playmakers.

SO ONE game out of 4 (proves nothing). If he had that record over 16 games he would be 4-12,so what was our record again?????.OH yeah 4-12 lol. So he was "as effective as Wentz" was before Wentz was benched. I'm willing to give him his chance, but by far and Away I don't see him as the next HOF'er and the pom poms are staying in my trunk

SO if he beat "arguably" the best defense, the other 3 games should have been like taking candy from a baby. Why didnt we win those?

Look at the stats Ham 300 yards one game 167 the next. That is inconsistent. That why TB got rid of Winston. And after they got the consistent QB(which I had been saying all along they needed to have) who won the SB????? MANY of those weapons were already in place for Brady. Sure, they added more when he came. SO let's get the weapons and line in first before we anoint Hurts as the next Brady ok??? Show me 300 yards a game each and every week, then maybe I would believe you, but right now the stats don't back you up

Welp it's his team for a year, unless he sucks, then it's Flacco's team (see Winston/Fitz in TB-same dang thing!!!). TB just kept changing them back and forth. I hope we dont do that.I hope Hurts is adequate, maybe he will lead this team, but if he gets benched, he needs to STAY benched. It's a rebuild year. What I want to see is him hitting receivers and making good decisions. If the PS WR's drop them, thats not on Hurts, but we need to see all that stuff. I'm not expecting him to become Aaron Rodgers this year, but I would like to see the consistency. He also better learn at times to THROW THE BALL AWAY. His instinct will be to run, but we have already seen that movie and it didn't end well
