Actually just read a great breakdown on the ST situation on Bleedinggreennation. Probably would mostly agree with their stats and opinion on the situation. (Mostly because it seems like the agree with me)

We need Reagor to be a stud for a decade

On this point,we simply don't know yet.MS 2 was supposed to be a stud for a decade,so was AG and by now you are also aware we aren't too hot at developing WR's.I'm not saying you are wrong, but thats a massive assumption and frankly unless you start him you aren't gonna know are you?.I'm starting Reagor or Goodwin whomever is he better WR.I'm still gonna make Reagor earn it,but as my 1 pick you better believe he's playing, even if I have to use a rotation

The TE position is, and has become tough to define. Many people use different terminologies even. I’ve heard it called the Y, the F, the U, the H.....depending on abilities. Also they flat out line up as a WR at times. I love when we see a matchup nightmare for a team and bring Ertz all the way out by the sideline and isolate the mismatch with LB or S.

Tony Gonzales is the best TE ever. I don’t remember him really ever blocking. But I’d say he is top ten RECEIVER ever. He was unstoppable!

Right... " isolate Ertz on a LB or a safety "     . . And why do teams put a LB or Safety on him?????.    Because he is  TE.  They don't put a LB or a safety on DeSean or Alshon when they are isolated... because they are WRs.

A point guard can post up a center can shoot from outside... they are still considered point guards and centers..  same with Ertz no matter where he lines up, he is a TE.  The formation with Goedert is considered 2 TEs.  If it's JJAW ... in for Ertz, it would be considered 3 WRs... and the defense would react accordingly.

Not just sticking him on ST. But going to let him electrify in the return game for sure. Why not? But this have a rookie try and play all these positions never seems very wise. He has the perfect mentor to learn his position very quickly. Let him learn a little. Become comfortable at the Z. He’ll get some special plays designed to get the ball in his hands also. Most think DJax is in his last season here anyway. I’d also venture that most think he will miss time as well. But it’s a truncated offseason. Can’t force everything down these guys throats. How much of a normal rookie offseason has already been missed? This class is behind. Signs are showing it won’t be a full TC or PS. So let’s not expect miracles week one out of these rookies. Keep things realistic and manageable.

Which is why(once again) I would be fine with him playing slot a game or 2.Get him used to the speed of the NFL more. That is how you develop WR's .If Jjaw can play slot,I'm sure reagor can do it a game or 2.It won't kill him, nor will it "destroy him as an outside WR".It just gets him into the swing of the offense without putting a "god you gotta catch this" pressure on him right away(see AG).I didn't draft him at 21 to ride pine and nothing wrong with sticking him in a slot role a few games to learn a little about the slot role. We don't need 3-1 trick ponies

Chiefs had a good if not great running game... dude could block.  He had to block, it just doesn't stand out as his skill. His position was TE, same with Jimmy Graham.  The standout skill doesn't matter, the position is TE.

Now maybe it’s too much to have Reagor doing KO returns. probably just have him on punt return duty. Maybe go with the No Mas plan and let Hightower take KOs. They are such a minimal part of the pro game anymore.

If we must lol,but once again,we have other players we could use to do that and I would like as many players as possible to get a chance to touch the ball(we have other rooks that need snap experience you know?)

Loved Tony. The guy I really adored at TE was Gates.Him and LT were a 2 man mob

Rerun of Eagles vs Green Bay was on over the weekend.   Sanders kick return was a key play.  For sure you consider putting the stud rookie out there. Get the ball in his hands as much as possible.  The thing that too many of you are not realizing... the amount of returns in today's game is so minimal.  Might have 2-3 combined kick/punt returns a game... he can handle it.  Edlemen was returning for New England... he gets slightly more than minimal usage in the offense too...lol.

I'm making Goodwin earn it a roster spot... forget the starting job.

I want Reager touching the ball as much as possible.   Just impact the game.  Gotta think Tyreke Hill style... do whatever which should include a couple returns.

Everyone has to earn a spot.Fact remains we got him as a late addition on the cheap. For his speed and the fact he has vet experience to cover for Djax(or if Reagor sucks)

Whatever. I want other guys to touch the ball.As we are aware by now, sometimes you need your BU's.Reagor is here for 4/5 years.I wanna know who we have in reserve and not have to play them with zero experience.Even a few returns gives someone else a chance to gain some snap experience.2/3 return touches a game won;t make much difference to Reagor, but could be a chance for someone else to show why they are roster worthy. So,we disagree, nothing shocking there

I will tell you a bog game last year was the Green Bay game, if we lost that one we would have dug a deep hole early, might not have come back.   A huge play in that game was Sanders punt return while we were down.  Whoever they think is the better return man, should get the job.  Don't overthink, all the rookies need action, the kid we drafted over your boy from LSU, a big part of why is his big play ability.  He can change the game with one touch.  The more opportunities he gets, if it's one return, let him have it if he is the best option.  If it's another guy, let that guy have it.   Gotta maximize the team's chances of winning, more important than giving a lesser player the opportunity to return a kick.

Big picture though, I would like to see that spot have some competition... be nice if we have a few WRs that can return.

Defensive reaction is a good way to judge the situation. But even then what do you call it when Aqib Talib follows your TE to cover all day?

Really much of the film shows Reagor lined up out to the right. I would probably describe a fair amount of it as the X role. Pedey has stated Reagor is learning the Z. So with this being the case: I don’t want him worrying about learning the slot. A designed play or two from the slot...sure. He could be put in the backfield also. But I’m looking for him to grow that part of his game as we go. I want him to rock some punt returns and pickup some moves to accel as a Z.
But let’s put things in semi-order here.
Punt returns: He has the skill pretty ready to roll. Wins the job and strikes fear!

Handoffs: Easiest most sure fire way to get the ball in his hands. He’s dangerous once he can go. So this will happen because he comes with this ability. Jet sweeps or straight from the backfield...whatever way you got.

Go Route: Run as fast as you can and catch the ball while giving the QB the biggest cushion to put the ball in there. He’s fast. He has experience of maintaining room from the sideline. He fights for the ball. Comes pro equipped for this. It will happen. Has to learn to adapt to the pros here. They will try and jam him and keep him from taking off on them. Then they will utilize S help over the top.

Screen Pass: Pedey and Duce know the screen game. He just needs to listen to them. Yes, I’m recruiting Duce to give Reagor some lessons. Taking handoffs, ball security, following your blocking and when to get North/South. I’d focus on this play in multiple forms, formations and positions. Get him terrorizing DC trying to gameplan for us.

So these were the first tier I’d say. I wanting him mastering these as soon as possible. Think he takes to these like a duck in water.

So we got him going deep and being elusive on screens. Then you counter the Nine Go Route with comebacks. Run up on the corner, get him to turn his hips and boom! Come back. Hitch, hooks...in or out...whatever but you are using their fear of getting beat deep to set it up.

Post Route: Reagor is a BEAST on these. Set him up with the Go but then make that move inside towards though...ughhh...(Goal)Post.

Slants: Leverage and getting off the line clean are key here. Pros have all dealt with these plenty. Always helps if somebody is clearing out that area for the slant to be clean run after catch.

Drag: kind of similar to a Slant. But not snapping on that quick timing angle. Letting it all clear out and the accelerating across field.

Ins and Outs: Plenty of footwork to perfect. Needs to be crisp and need multiple yardage combinations.

But it all just comes to down to countering and working the defender.

His whole thing is being healthy. Pedey can unleash him as a weapon....if he can go. So I think he’s a starter week one if healthy....or gets hurt during TC walking out of the locker room and doesn’t make the team. Complete Boom or Bust guy. I like taking the chance. Low cost with a nice potential return.

Absolutely! Let’s not over complicate things right away. Just let him play some ball. He doesn’t need a full Route Tree from all the different positions week one. Find the easiest ways to make him a success. Then grow from there.

We could really hit defenders with some speed. We could start out the season with him and DJax opposite each other. Stretching the defense!
Imagine how much room that gives the TE and RBs. Sanders and Scott will destroy single defenders in any open space.

Absolutely! Once Reagor becomes an irreplaceable piece of the offense....then I maybe pull him off the majority of returns. Basically just like his mentor DJax.

How I see the S situation is we have a more than solid known commodity in McLeod. So it’s up to Parks, Mills and Wallace to earn roles around him. Mills has the upper hand in his trust with the Scwartz, playbook and scheme knowledge. Aren’t really commited to anyone going forward at the position. These are the guys I’d expect to make the team. But 2021....and going forward it’s a job interview. Gotta go get it

I want to keep Hightower. Hard to say what the numbers game at WR works out to be. But use him as the KO Return man. Use him as a Gunner. Make him a core ST player.
Kind of feeling him as being the one trick pony backup speed option on offense. Low expectations early. Hopefully he can come on as/if needed.

  • Author

Kind of bummed about releasing Trevor Williams. Thought, if healthy, he had that potential to be a number two corner. Don’t know why they released him at this time.

  • Author

Probably can expect more trimming of the roster. We have Leo that is on International exemption. So he’s basically a free player for practice all season. But others I just don’t think they’ll deal with everything. Need to keep this as contained an environment as possible.
