The first time around, some of his "handlers" didn't think another loud mouth loon on the ticket would be a good pick. Ivanka for example pushed him to pick Pence because she thought a quiet christian conservative would balance out the whole "orange hitler" thing he usually does. I think all of the sensible people who worked on his campaign and in his whitehouse are gone. So yeah, I think he will go for someone who is in his eyes "100% loyal no matter what". That leaves someone like MTG or Don Jr. 

I still think he does a backroom deal with DeSantis, where Trump promises his full endorsement (and agrees not to run in '28 should they lose) if DeSantis kisses the ring now as his VP.

No chance. Trump’s ego is too fragile to have DeSantis on the ticket. Also, DeSantis is smart enough to know that no one comes out of being around trump looking good.

Yeah, there's no way Trump agrees to that.  DeSantis either wisely realizes that running in '24 ends his career and he waits it out or Trump takes him down through any means necessary (one of which is the in-state party reps who start cancelling primaries).  Gonna be pretty hard for DeSantis to win delegates if no one's allowed to vote.
