I understand he forfeits the money, but from what I am reading across multiple articles, looks like the cap hit still remains on a fully guaranteed salary.

Either way, a lot of dead money if it is just the pro rated signing bonus money.

If he retires, even guaranteed money can go away on the salary cap. However, retiring for physical injury reasons (ex: can't pass physical) would keep salary on books.

This probably wont go over well... BUT (Here me out)

If Hurts proves he isn't the guy, and we dont see anyone we like in the draft, would we consider Derek Carr?  With Gruden gone, a new HC may wish to start over in Vegas, and Carr would be on his last year of his contract next year.

Would he interest you over Minshew/Hurts and what else would be avail in FA for a year or two as a placeholder for a franchise QB?

He might be able to be got in the offseason, is all I am saying, and I wouldn't shoot it down, if it was between him and Hurts.

Derek Carr sucks.  Hell no.

You're right.  This will not go well.

Really speculating there, but I presume you'd have to trade for Derek Carr, and that would probably cost a 1.  I think that's too rich for us, as we are rebuilding.

Bigger question: would Carr actually be an upgrade at QB over Jalen?

C'mon. Yes, he would be. But not worth the cost and/or extension.

If Hurts fails, roll with Minshew for 2022.

He would be an upgrade, but he's just so average to me as a QB. Guy is a perennial loser no matter what the roster looks like.

And I still haven't forgiven you

I suggested it more as a 'could happen' once Watson, Wilson, and Rodgers have said no.  If you offered me Derek Carr at $25M per season on a new contract -- or draft a QB in 2022 -- I'd choose drafting and developing one.

At what? Winston? He's playing better than Carr now, makes like 1/5th of his salary and is a FA so you don't have to trade anything. Plus you get gems like this

Lane Johnson has a fully guaranteed salary ( as of March 19 2021, my bday by the way ) of 7 million, and a prorated signing bonus 8.6 million for a cap hit of 15.7 million in 2022.

He also has pro rated signing bonus cap hits 2023-2025 totaling 19.3 million.

If he retires, the Eagles have two options.  Eat the entire 2021 guaranteed salary and prorated signing bonus money in 2022 taking his cap hit from 15.7 million to 35 million, or designate him a post June 1 release and spread that 35 million over 2022 / 2023.

I don‘t think that‘s how it works.

Guaranteed money is not guaranteed against retirement. Even more, the Eagles could try to have him pay back part of his signing bonus.

When an NFL player retires, all of the dead money on their contract counts against the current year’s salary cap. As far as the salary cap goes, player retirement is treated the same as if a player were cut or traded by the team. Any non-dead money is forfeit upon retirement and does not count against the team’s cap, but the dead money remains.

Speaking of WFT, WFT took you 14 years to retire Sean Taylor's number?  It took the Eagles maybe 4 months to retire Jerome Brown's number.

Merely a smokescreen, given the short notice, to draw attention away from the Snyder investigation.

Unless the team takes back the money from a player, since the player is in breach of contract.

Question: Can Hurts be as good as Winston, Mariota, Carr, Glennon, Bridgewater?  Because that or a vet at the end of his career is what you might get in free agency at multiples of the cost.  Unlikely that the Eagles rebuild is done in the last draft or next year’s draft. Reality is Hurts and Minshew are probably the QBs next year.  I am good with that.  Next year is also the next step to fixing Howie’s financial mess.  Build the 2023 draft capital, develop and train the next defense, target 2023 as the start of the next run.

No Goedert tonight ..... how's Hurts gonna adjust from not throwing the ball to him to not being able to throw him the ball??

He just started working on field with trainers. Probably needs a few more weeks of rehab/getting in football shape.

The OL is at a massive crossroads right now.   Lots of very intriguing talent, almost no sure-things.  It will be very tricky to know how heavily to address (or not to) the OL with the draft this year.

Mailata is the apple in everyone's eye, but almost no one is willing to admit that he does not stand on solid ground.  He has dealt with a lot of injuries for someone who has played so little.  He still consistently shows some difficulty with pure speed around the edge.  So the franchise foundation piece along the OL still hasn't actually put it together, even if it's something everyone is expecting.  Despite what everyone says about the tackle positions placing the same emphasis on pass protection, they are wrong.  Not protecting the blind side does generally mean you'll spend a little less time dealing with pure speed around the edge...much easier for the QB (well, maybe not Hurts) to step up and avoid that from that side).

Dillard, from a reputation standpoint, is the anti-Mailata.  Everyone projects his flaws and ignores his strengths.  Over the last 2 weeks, he has been the best OL on the team.  He's well ahead of the rest of the OL in pure pass protection...for the LT on a team that throws 70% of the time, maybe that's a guy that actually belongs in the future plans??

Dickerson.  Not much to say.  Over-discussed already.  Talented, injury issues, probably a reach, struggling right now...but should improve moving forward.

Driscoll.  I liked the pick, liked the prospect...I feel like he has disappointed since then.  Struggled with multiple injuries, gets overpowered frequently.  If you get him on the right smoothies, then maybe he can stick as a starter...there's potential, but is currently a liability until proven otherwise.

Seumalo.  Next year is his last year under contract.  He's the most proven of this group, but I'm not sure how long he'll stick around turning 29 in his contract year.

I think I would roll with Dillard/Dickerson/Kelce/Driscoll/Mailata for the rest of this year.  If they impress, then it's a little easier to slide Seumalo right in there as Kelce's replacement for next year.  If they don't impress, then a lot of that 2022 draft capital is going to need to go into the OL.

Did someone ask for the most pessimistic view possible on the state of the o-line? This is too depressing on game day

Henbo is on 97.5 right now, and had some numbers proving that Brady does not deal well with pressure from the middle is a myth.  He actually has more losses with increased edge pressure above the norm than interior pressure.
