Folks who are looking for Lane Johnson, Fletcher Cox and other high priced guys to be traded need to look at the salary cap implications of those moves.  Howie's kicking of the can would accelerate all that prorated bonus money to the 2022 salary cap.

Cox: $40.7M
Johnson: $28M
Brooks: $15.5M

Of those, only Brooks would end up being a net savings for 2022.  ($3.7M 'saved')
Johnson would end up costing an extra $12M+ in 2022.
Trading Cox would end up costing an extra almost $26M!

Thanks Howie!

is it worth biting the bullet and taking the hit next year? the birds probably won't be competitive, and definitely not a destination spot for any decent free agent.

they had an elite QB in 2017.

Who was in year 2. Eagles draft/trade/sign the right guy and they’re right back in it.

you have two main paths you can take. keep sending hurts out there and never really know if sirianni is the issue with the offense or you put minshew or flacco out there and see if the offense improves, implying hurts is the issue.

If both options still suck, clean house and get rid of howie.

Why do I need both options to suck to get rid of Howie?   Howie is the one that put us in the position we are in right now in the first place.  How about just 'fire Howie'.

I choose the latter at this point. Let's see Minshew. I'm sick of watching Hurts bail on the pocket when there isn't much pressure.

I've never seen someone bail from 3 man rushes as much as Hurts has this year

Honestly, Gowan stuck out like a sore thumb late in the draft. Not sure why we didn’t just draft him.

Thankfully we waited til 11 games left before he hits free agency to decide to give him a chance to be a no. 1 TE

Wonder if Ertz was told before the game last night. Seems like he knew afterwards at least.

My guess is he knew. I haven’t seen that much emotion from Ertz on the field in a long time.  He was hyped after every catch.  That then brings up the question. If he knew he was getting traded, why risk injury?

Yeah it’s why i didn’t even mention Cox or lane. They are both here through 2022. I do think if brooks was actually healthy he’d be a candidate but being injured i don’t see it. I do think Nelson could be had at the right price. I would say slay but i don’t remember with his restructuring if it makes it impossible. But i could see a team like tampa or GB with Alexander hurt wanting to acquire hIm

Savings of $6+M if traded now for 2022.

Damn.

Cool.  Shall we discuss his 2nd round picks now?

I'd rather zone in on this 5th round comment a little more

John Hightower

Clayton Thorson

Shelton Gibson

Nate Gerry

Wendell Smallwood

Vaitai

Great success!

Howie is just such a poor GM.

Eagles risked injury with Zach.
Eagles also got to showcase Zach's upside without Dallas playing.

We probably got more because he played last night.

I fully agree, I was in the fire howie camp after last season. but I think if that scenario played out you have absolutely no reason to keep him.

The only other real trade piece is Nelson. Brooks and Slay would save space, but Brooks is hurt and Slay is worth keeping.

If the eagles weren’t in a rebuild for another year in 2022 I’d agree. However i think by the time the eagles are competing for a playoff spot that slay is going to be on the decline making a lot of money. Depending on what they could acquire for him I’d consider it. Bucs and Gb need corners. If they get into a bidding war it could help the eagles long term even if short term we’d be a mess at corner

We're trading for OBJ!

No discount?  WTH does even mean?  Nice leverage

It means they already lowballed him all offseason and his agent laughed and hung up

Well, yeah -- if we could get a 2nd or a 3rd, I'm packing his bags. But for a 5th? Nah.

Howie basically said it was a done deal before the game

It is absolutely worth considering, but HOWIE can't be the guy doing it.  He's the one that loaded the gun.  Likely the right move was to do a lot of that this year already and really leaning into the rebuild.  But, they wanted to throw around the idea that it was a retool.  Just foolishness, and its more of the same foolishness that we've seen since they hoisted the Lombardi.  Howie changed his tactics, tried to get too clever and dug a deep deep hole the team has to dig out of.  And frankly, trading most of those guys would bring back peanuts anyway.  It would just be salary dumps, which I'm fine with, as long as it's not Howie doing the dumping.   If Howie is doing the dumping, that's an admission of culpability and he needs to be held accountable... and I don't mean Lurie telling him that he can't have dessert with dinner.

man, I wanted hurts to succeed so bad. loved his attitude in the off season and the work he was putting in, saying all the right things. he just doesn't have it. bails way too early and apparently can only see one side of the field.

Which makes letting him play completely INSANE. I get the sentimental part, but Howie's job is to maximize value.

Of all the idiotic things Howie has done...this is up there.

I actually think you could probably get a 3rd for him. With how desperate tampa and GB and some others could be for corners at the deadline. GB might be without Alexander for the rest of the year and the Bucs are down guys left and right. Granted not sure how he fits within either of their systems and what they like to run.

Lane and Brooks are on the "do not want" list for most teams right now.  A player dealing with a personal issue and another one that's constantly (and currently) injured aren't high on other teams' priority list.
