Cap strapped team that can get a potentially elite player on a bargain deal if he continues to grow into the job. There is some risk that he'll plateau early... but that's why there isn't as high a cost. Risk for the team in potentially overpaying for what he currently is, while giving him security now and bypassing the risk he'd take in gambling on himself and not getting injured. This was a smart move. Some of the other moves made ZERO sense... like restructuring Barnett and Johnson this summer. Well, depends on Johnson's ankle, If he's 100% he's the best RT in the NFL and will be for 3 or 4 more years, his extension at his age is a better deal than Trent Williams.

He didn't waste his time when benched, but used that to review what he was doing wrong and correct those mistakes. They're not just gambling on his off the charts size/athleticism combo, but also on his intangibles, intelligence, work ethic, competitiveness. He's the **** child of Tra and Peters. I'm just cautious with this stuff anymore we haven't had much luck in this department in awhile
September 11, 20214 yr Just now, austinfan said: One point about drafting WRs, when the Eagles drafted Barnett and Williams in the 3rd and 5th rd, who was the WR drafted in the 2nd round? So if Watkins turns out to be a steal, Reagor just has to be decent for the 2020 draft to shine, in the end it's not which round you draft prospects, but how many become players. Mailata in the 7th turned out better than Dillard in the 1st, but they still ended up with a potential all pro LT (and they traded up to be sure they nabbed Mailata). One reason Cleveland was bad for so long was while they drafted solid in the first 3 rounds, they had 4 or 5 years where they missed on every third day pick. Um... which years are you referring to for 'drafting solid in the first 3 rounds'? Brandon Weeden Trent Richardson Corey Coleman Johnny Manziel Barkevious Mingo That's 2012-2016. So, I assume you are not referring to those years as being good drafts... Starting in 2017, they actually started to draft well.

Like you said though maybe if they actually set him up to succeed it will be different but, I also doubt it At this point, they need to make it a smooth transition and salvage what they can. But, if he's mentally checked out on the idea, there's nothing they can do.

Measuring a bad move against a worse move does not make it a good move. Why make the room available in this year's salary cap? What's the payoff? Just pushing more money into the future. Howie's specialty.
September 11, 20214 yr If the Eagles have 3 1st round picks...and they keep all 3. I would have no issue if they Chris Olave. He's insanely smooth at WR. Pairing him with Smith would give the Eagles a pair of dynamic route runners. I know it would seem silly to draft a WR for the 3rd year in a row in round 1 but he would be a tremendous weapon for Hurts.
September 11, 20214 yr Just now, RLC said: By this logic, all GMs are lucky. Meaning, Howie landed a Round 7 guy who could be a stud to help mitigate his failure with Dillard. The Dillard pick looms larger without the presence of Mailata.

September 11, 20214 yr Just now, Bwestbrook36 said: True but stoutland also signed off on Dillard at the last minute. Exactly. Meaning, what he saw on the tape looked good. Dillard's issues aren't his body, its between his ears. The Eagles didn't properly vet him, and when he fell to them, they leaped before they looked.
September 11, 20214 yr The Eagles will have to decide what Dillard’s value is. The NFL is a "what have you done for me” business, and Dillard is entering his 3rd season already and about to turn 26. With the Mailata extension hitting the news Howie’s phone will be ringing. LT is a premium position and Dillard will still be viewed as a better LT option than some teams’ starter right now. I’m not sure I could see Dillard moving to G; he never played IOL in college and that would be a long term process to train him there. The Eagles are committed to Lane through 2023 and Dillard through 2025. If a team calls with a 2nd rounder offered I think the Eagles would move quick.

A 2nd rounder for Dillard would be too much to pass up.

It all depends on the structure. If the signing bonus is minimal, and the base salaries/roster bonuses are the guaranteed money, they can put that into whatever year they want. We'll see once the structure is devulged. BUT... in other news... this sort of answers the question of what Goedert might have meant about the team 'going in another direction' with his contract negotiations. The Eagles might not have been able to do both. And when Goedert's number was too high for a TE, they decided to put the money into the higher priority position.

A lot of NFL OGs are college OTs, b/c college teams generally put their best athletes at LT. And the switch from LT to LG isn't as drastic, especially for athletic linemen in systems that use LGs to pull and run stretch plays.

He's a backup LT and that's it. Look at Brett Toth and Jack Driscoll. Both of those guys are practically plug and play across the line. Herbig can plug in at OG or C. Give me a slightly less talented player who can play multiple positions over a guy who is locked in on just 1. They need to trade him for whatever value they can get. They have Clark and Awosika on the PS, one which offers potential and the other who provides veteran experience.
