Hurts went 11-for-17 for 162 yards, and ran the ball 10 times for 62 yards.  17 passes and 10 runs from the QB isn't winning football.  It works well when you're playing with a big lead, but very difficult to win when you're even or trailing.  It might be useful if you've got a top 5-10 defense like the Ravens put out every season, and Lamar can run 20 times because they're always in the game.

When we're here pointing out 3-4 good throws he made during 60 minutes of football the bar starts to be pretty low.  He also made horrible throws to a wide open Goedert downfield, and was back-pedaling from an imaginary pass rush on 3rd and goal to miss a pretty easy TD.

Castillo for DC!

I think Juan is an O-line coach again somewhere?  He was a great O-line coach.  Andy lost his ever loving mind when he tried to make him a DC.

That would certainly fix our secondary.  Now, if we fire Gannon we will be in good shape!

I'd at the very least give him the opportunity to show what he can do with all of the added talent.

His time is already running out though

If Hurts could pass the way he did at the end of the game consistently and take off a bit less, we would be in a much better position moving forward. He's got half a season left to show he can do it.

Repeat after me,

Can you stop with the condescension?

The preseason predictions demonstrate that nearly everyone in here recognized that the team was in need of rebuilding.  So, there's no need to beat that drum.   BUT... in so recognizing, you can watch the games and look for where the coaches are missing the mark, where specific players are missing the mark, and where they should be improving, but are remaining where they have been or are regressing.

Meanwhile, the rebuild is necessary because the guy in charge of adding talent added guys like JJAW in place of Adderley.  Reagor over Jefferson, Pittmann, Claypool or any number of a bunch of others.  And now he's trading for players that he chose to go with other players in the draft instead, and those players aren't playing either.

This team is generally frustrating because they don't seem to have a direction right now.  The QB isn't good enough, and its obvious.  The offensive scheme is hard to evaluate, because the QB is limiting what they can do effectively.  The defensive scheme is hard to watch, because the DC is playing the safe shell defense, which puts a lot of pressure on the guys in the middle of it, but there's virtually no talent there.  It is frustrating to watch.  The team has not been fun to watch in 4 games out of 9.  The Cowboys game was atrocious and an embarrassment on national TV.  The Chiefs game was tough to watch, and while the offense got points, the game was never in question.  The Bucs game, while close on the scoreboard felt much more like a cat playing with a mouse than a game that the Eagles had a chance to win.  And the Raiders spanked the team for a full 3 quarters, before the garbage time points came to make it look close again.

I expected losses, I did not expect the team to look so lost and rudderless.  Now... defend Howie for how he's built this roster that is so desperately in need of rebuilding.

Ahh yes. Clay Travis.  Great sample piece there

But I thought you were talking about people discussing it in here not in the media.  And yes.  There were some, namely PFT/Mike Florio, who clamped on the Rodgers story and went nuts with it.

He went nuts on it because of the people like Clay Travis out there who are on the other side in support. It’s a lot more of a divisive and political topic than the Ruggs deal. Hence the continued coverage.

This HonestNFL guy loses credibility every time he talks about Hurts.

Is this really what we want???  Are we this pathetic??  We won the f'ing SB just a few seasons ago and now we all have to bite our tongues or be overly-impressed with a game that clearly demonstrated that Sirianni knows Hurts isnt an NFL QB.

Is this seriously where we're at, talking about "ripping comebacks perfectly" in a loss where he goes 11/17 for 162 yards?

And that includes two likely TD passes that he didn't "rip to perfection"

With a top ten defense, he could easily carry this team to 10+ wins running this current offense behind an improving OL. Grind out the wins but he can handle the pressure of close games.

I think if this were the case, the top ten defense would carrying him to 10+ wins... This current offense is asking him to do very little 'quarterbacking', and a lot of 'runningbacking'. 11 completions.  10 rushes.  That's not a QB 'carrying anything', that's a QB being carried along.

Worse than Castillo on all levels.

McDermott and bowels and Billy Davis were all worse than Castillo at DC and none of them had to deal with the cancer that was Jim Washburn👎

Gannon though ,yes he's been worse than Billy Davis.

Lots of OTs would agree. Yesterday Howard chipped Bosa (I think it was Bosa anyway), and it awkwardly gave him leverage against Lane, ruining his pass set.

Yep, that was an amazing defense.  RIP Mike.

I couldn't watch the game yesterday because of kid stuffs.  Offensive progress sounds encouraging - I've been pretty critical of Siri, but it sounds like he's making some adjustments and figuring things out.

I'm really disappointed in our supposedly great D-line.  0 sacks yesterday?

ZERO QB hits as well.  The only QB hit was by CB Nelson and he got flagged for unnecessary roughness for going low on Herbert.  I wonder how many QB pressures they had, if any?

One problem is their lack of quality depth along the DL especially at DE.  Cox played 83% of the D snaps and that's entirely too much for him at this point in his career.  Hargrave played 75% with Williams at 45% (that's a good % for him) and Ridgeway only at 26%.  Barnett, Mr. Bad Dumb Penalty and Not Particularly Effective, played 80% of snaps.  He should be under 50%.  Kerrigan and Jackson only played 20 combined snaps.  So the DL is getting tired out as the game goes on.  We basically had no chance of stopping the Chargers on that last GW drive.

The D side of the ball needs a desperate infusion of new young quality talent.  Unless they absolutely fall in love with one of the draft eligible QBs and are convinced he is the one to lead the team for future years to come then they should draft heavy with D players, especially early.  With whatever money we have for FA I'd want them to target a vet slot WR (bye bye JJAW, Ward, and Reagor) to help both the QB (whether Hurts or Minshew) and the young WRs (Smith, Watkins, Hightower) to get better.  I think a vet WR who is a good quality player can teach these guys some things to help them grow and improve.  I'm not on board with trading away high picks for Wilson.  His window is limited and by the time you draft to build the D (which you trade away picks for him and you won't be doing that until 2023) he'll be near the end of his career.  Watson is still young enough to have a 10 year window of opportunity, but all that legal ish with him has to be resolved first and who knows how long that will take?

If he had acknowledged that missed pass to Goedert in that tweet, would it really change anything about what he said?

Break his tweet down line by line. It doesn’t say he played perfectly. It said he played as he expected he would coming into the season. And he ripped comebacks (which he wasn’t before).

Seems so.

Hurts made the big plays with the game on the line. Can't ask much more from a young QB.

Siri asked too much of him early, and I think misunderstood his college experience, Hurts is not good at the RPO, or even the run option, he's actually best as a pocket QB in a balanced scheme who can use his legs to buy time and make big plays (and force teams to spy, opening up the field for his receivers). He needs time to develop as a NFL QB, but gee, you can say that for practically any college QB these days. 4 schemes in 4 years, give him a chance to actually master one.

As far as arm strength, look at some of those throws when he sets his feet, he's not going to make the jaw dropping off balance "all arm" throw, but neither could Brees et al. He needs to speed up his recognition and perfect his mechanics, but when he does, he has more than an adequate arm, he's not Tebow or the Detmer brothers.

Hurts' running ability gives you the option of letting him win games with athleticism while he learns on the job.

With a top ten defense, he could easily carry this team to 10+ wins running this current offense behind an improving OL. Grind out the wins but he can handle the pressure of close games.

Get deep into the playoffs? Hurts would have to take it up a notch, the OL a notch, add a big WR and have Jackson emerge as a dangerous H-back.

But the odds of drafting a franchise QB (even at #1/#2 it's probably no more than 20%, after that, #3-15, maybe 10%?) are so low they're better off seeing how far Hurts can progress and building a team. Or do you want to use a high first, and if you're lucky, after 3 more years of struggling with bad QB play, end up with someone like Wentz circa 2018-2019).

I thought Arcega-Whiteside was the next great thing at H-back...

Breaking news - teams do, in fact, draft franchise QBs.

Hutchinson over Thibodeaux all day in Gannons defense. Thibodeaux would get  mauled in the 4I, just like Sweat does.  Hutchinson is bigger and stronger.

I like what I saw out of him yesterday.  He's still making some technical mistakes which still makes sense given the lack of experience, but just importantly he's cutting down on them and starting to flash drive of that athleticism we were told about when he was drafted. Still a long ways to go, but in a rebuilding year I love that he got 71% of the snaps (the most by far of the LBs). Let him learn, see what we have and hopefully we have an actual starting caliber LB next year.

This is the play I was talking about it.  The more I watch it the better it gets. He keeps his eyes on the QB. He sees him looking in the flat but doesn't loose track of his assignment.  As soon as he sees Hebert bring his arm back to throw, he is breaking on the ball.   Ekeler has no chance on the play.  Taylor has his shoulder outside of Ekeler so if he misses the tackle is if forcing him back to other defenders.  He made a nice tackle.  He didn't just try to knock him down but wrapped him up nicely.

Castillo to DC is over blown by this fan base

Guy played LB in college and the USFL coached defense at Kingsville.

When Reid was hired Juan was a TE coach and asked Reid to give him a shot at OL and Reid did and he became one of the best OL coaches in the league.

To think he could go from OL to Defense when he was originally a LB isn't the big stretch it's made out to be and he did better with the same talent than McDermott and bowels did, both of whom are lifelong defensive coaches.

I'll always stick up for Juan not only is he a hard working good honest human he was a heck of a coach whatever he was doing and still is.

Idk broncos lose anyone yesterday? cause next week got surtain, fuller and Darby. That’s a massive upgrade from what the chargers were running out there yesterday. Really Chris Harris was the only starter type guy out there for the chargers and Campbell was playing with a groin injury.
