Daniel Jeremiah on the Eagles upcoming draft plans

- Says the margin between Hurts and the 2022 QB draft prospects is not enough to justify moving on from Hurts.

- Says the Eagles accumulated these picks with the plan to trade for a veteran QB, he names Wilson/Rodgers.

- Says look for Eagles to draft Secondary, Defensive End, and Defensive Tackle.

Howie's dream is a defense made up entirely of DTs and slot corners

You accumulate all those draft picks to trade for a veteran QB closer to his prime, not a veteran QB winding down his career.  I hate this plan so much.  Rebuild the core of this team.  Build this defense with blue chippers, not 6th rounders and UDFA.  Ugh.

Howie is already building our CB room with day three players

Checking in.

Does Russell Wilson still suck?

Just so I am caught up, we now have someone claiming the following:

- Hurts is basically the same as McNabb. Sure, McNabb was the MVP runner-up in his 1st full year as a starter, and until recently people have questioned whether Hurts should be benched for a guy we acquired at the end of training camp. Yeah…similar career trajectory
- Bonus: McNabb was never better than 10-15 in the league as a QB. I guess the 9 better QBs from 2000-2004 were Brady, Manning, um..there’s definitely 7 more

- Russell Wilson isn’t an elite QB despite, you know, likely being an all-time great

- Patrick Mahomes isn’t elite. Seriously

This place never disappoints. I can’t wait until our resident expert tells me that Jerry Rice wasn’t an elite WR.

Trading multiple top picks for a soon to be 33-year-old QB who relies on mobility for a decent chuck of his game isn't smart. It would be one thing if he was the last piece but they are quite a few players away from that.

I'm with you on Rodgers, the timeline just doesn't make sense. Wilson, I am little more accepting of, but I think the price and competition for him will be too much.

What's interesting in Daniel's draft preview is his reporting that the 2022 QBs are not much better than Hurts.

He has connections in the Eagles organization, so if he is saying this I would bet he has checked in with the Eagles FO and that was his takeaway.

Looks increasingly likely that Hurts is our QB for at least 2022, barring a blockbuster trade.

Smith is 100th in YAC, with 138. Its not the greatest stat to judge a WR because the QB has a lot responsibility in a pass catchers YAC, in the first 10 games for Alabama last year, Smith was 1st with 768.

Btw, Goedert is 47th, Sanders is 54th and Quez is 61st.

I really hope there isn’t a blockbuster in the works. I’d much rather see those picks put to good use to build this roster rather than building a different one. I don’t see this team like Tampa Bay which was basically a quarterback away from being great. Also does any of these guys have TB clout to get great NFL players to come to Philly of all places to be cold in December and work for league veteran minimums? I don’t think so.

From Russell’s lips to Howie’s ears. This is exactly the type of thing Howie wants to hear. Getting Wilson for ten years would be something very appealing for Howie. Be careful what you wish for though. Just cause Wilson wants to play for 10 more years doesn’t mean he’s going to be effective for 10 more and playing in cold and windy Philly in December might not yield the same results.

40 teams would be awful.

Russell Wilson is a scrub and Mahomes is unproven.

Maybe his next take will be what paint chips taste like or about the alluring scent of glue.

We currently do not have the talent to support 40 teams.

In order to do this right, the NFL needs to expand the talent pipeline beyond America and Canada.

Structural investments would need to be made in other areas of the world to supply the NFL with more talent.

Need to invest in Football programs in Australia, Polynesia, Europe, Africa etc.

His wife will put the kibosh on a trade to Philly.  Thankfully.   This off season his agents will let Howie know he doesn't want to play in Philly and they will only get him for 2 seasons - if he even reports- and he won't resign with them when the contract is up after the 2023 season.

At least this is my hope.  Use the 4 picks in the top 45 and get young, less expensive talent.  3 defenders and another offensive lineman please.

I can totally see Howie using a narrative like this to spin trading our 3 first rounders for Wilson:

"Well one of the first rounders was basically found gold through the swindling of the Miami trade back, it always icing since we would have picked DeVonta at #6 anyways.

The 2nd first was from the Wentz trade who we wanted to dump anyways because he turned out not to be worth the contract we gave him.

So we really only traded 1 "real" first round draft pick for a Hall of Fame QB in his prime.

You all can cue the applause and bask in the glory that is Howie now"

Or some other weasel tactic.

Yeah the only way I see Wilson wanting to come to the east coast would be to get closer to NY. The thing is the Giants also have picks, cap space, and play in Northern Jersey so they’re basically NY already. I agree can’t see wifey sitting up in a box freezing while Philly fans are ripping her husband after consecutive three and out drives.

I really don't think under any circumstances that all 3 of our picks THIS year would be traded for one guy. Generally, these huge deals involve multi year 1sts, and I think it would be completely negligent to give up all 3 2022 1sts.

That being said......it's Lowie, so.....

Howie generally likes to be the guy who wins the deal. Giving up two or three first for a 33 year old quarterback (turning 34 in the 2022 season) would be one heck of a risk to make. Funny thing is the fans who would widely cheer for this move will be the first ones to call for Howie’s head for giving up the draft capital for a quarterback on a team that isn’t good enough to win anything and his contract would make it difficult for them to improve via free agency.

Wilson is already showing signs of decay, and I'm not sure how effective he'd be in a conventional offense where he can't run around, buy time and throw deep - which is how he pads his QB rating (he may blame his high sack numbers on his OL, but his style is partially responsible). And as he ages, he's not going to be as evasive buying time. He was a better QB his first five years in the league.

The advantage of a pocket QB as they age is "mobility, what mobility," as long as they have adequate arm strength, experience will compensate for some decline in arm strength. Wilson's problem in the pocket - he's short.

All these rumors about the Eagles trading for a QB, is there any actual evidence? Eagles were interested in Wilson, which means they made a phone call, which they probably did for a dozen potential trade ups/downs before the draft. Every team wants a top QB, they also want a top WR, DE, etc etc.

Watching Stafford in LA, he's the same QB he was in Detroit with better talent, but he didn't magically transform into an elite QB.

The trick with elder QBs, Peyton in Denver, Brady in TB, is surround them with lots of talent and ask them to run the team, not carry the team.
