If Jalen Hurts keeps playing like this, Howie will sign him to a contract extension this offseason.

He’s not eligible until after year 3.

Jalen Hurts making compelling case to be Eagles' quarterback beyond 2021

One of the biggest things working against Hurts is that Jeffrey Lurie is one of the most pass-minded (and therefore, heavy run-averse) owners in the league. He is into analytics big-time, and the analytics tell him that throwing is the way to go. There's more than a touch of irony here, as Lurie was influential in the team's decision to draft Hurts, and now the Eagles are running an offense that doesn't quite fit Lurie's belief system. The idea, however, wasn't to draft Hurts to be QB1, but rather a dynamic No. 2 to Carson Wentz.

History had other ideas. Wentz is long gone, Hurts has taken firm control of the reins, and with one of the softest finishing schedules in the NFL, the 5-6 Eagles are set up to make a hard charge at the postseason. ESPN's Football Power Index gives Philly a 39% chance to make the playoffs.

Things are starting to fall into place, in no small part because of the electric play of Hurts. So long as that continues, the search for a different lead quarterback should be put on hold.

Just thinking...

We ran the read-option.

We ran the read-option with a pitch man.

We ran the RPO.

We ran our IZ and OZ, traps, split zone, and power.
We ran the wildcat.

We ran a double wing.

Jet sweep.

That’s just the run plays.

Their linebackers had 9 combined tackles, which is stupid low considering how often we ran the ball. If Marcus Davenport didn't have the game of his life, it would have been much worse for them. Our run game basically made one of the best LB corps in the league irrelevant when they knew it was coming.

Very encouraging stuff.

It looks like Reagor was just fine on PR; where was he bringing the KR out from?  If he's bringing it out of the end zone then, yeah, that needs to be corrected.  If he's fielding them outside the EZ that's what teams do by design to limit returns short of the 25.

The Saints did a great job of hitting the ball high and short of the goal line, forcing Reagor to return it. I don't think Reagor made any poor decisions on any of his returns.

Has it occurred to anyone that Sirianni has never had a QB with this kind of skill package, and he may be intrigued with how far he can go with Hurts, especially given the OL they're building.

As Justrelax pointed out, Hurts is allowing Sirianni to be creative in building a run game, now use that as your base and gradually expand Hurt's responsibilities as a passer. And you don't have to do this in one week, you can do this over the next two years.

I'd point out that McNabb was an option QB when AR got him in 1999, he didn't learn how to run the WCO at a high level until 2003. But his running ability allowed AR to win with him while developing his full skill package. Yes, McNabb had a stronger arm, but a funky throwing motion and was notoriously inaccurate (worm alert!). Hurts is a better runner, better leader, off the chart work ethic. And he's more sophisticated as a runner, having played in various college schemes he can master all those wrinkles Siri comes up with.

So while everyone is speculating Howie is going to sell the farm for a "name" QB, don't be surprised if Sirianni tells him he wants another year to see if they can make it work with Hurts, and then make a decision in the spring 2023 (extension, trade or draft).

Hurts is currently 20th in rushing attempts out of all players in the NFL. Mainly, running backs.

If people truly don't understand why this is a problem long term, they never will.

That‘s only a problem if he gets hit like a RB. He doesn’t. Given how rarely he gets sacked, he prolly takes less hits than the non-running QBs…

Just read that Reagor has 63 receiving yards in his last 8 games combined. That can't be right. If that's right, why TF is he active...

Punt and KO returns, I guess. Has some kind of speed threat on O, I guess. But sheesh....

He sucks at returning too. I don't know if it's mental because they drafted Smith the following year and he's now just the returner or what

Neither did Dak, until he went down for a year because of one play.

That can happen to any QB. There are no guarantees.

And by the way, Dak got sacked a lot that year..

Right... and having your QB run as if he's a running back is a recipe for disaster long term.

F.O. refuse to admit their mistakes.  They don't do humiliation.

At least he runs forwards. That's refreshing!

After watching my QB get hurt every year I for one enjoy having a QB that is built like a tank.

How many times has Hurts taken a hard hit this year?

Now how many times has the average pocket QB taken hard hits?

In fact, if you do film review, I think you'd find most of the hits Hurts has taken has been when he stays in the pocket, trying to make a play. When he runs, he runs low like a RB (not upright like Wentz), is extremely strong, and has the instincts to avoid direct hits in the open field. And he's already learning not to macho every run, he goes out of bounds or down to avoid contact (the Tony Dorsett method to career longevity).

Wilson might be the only QB I can think of with a simliar build, though Wilson is 3 or 4" shorter.

He is one of 2 guys I want in the draft next year. The other is Bernhard Raimann from Central Michigan.

He is from Austria (Europe), 6"7 310lbs, he is raw but super athletic and strong.

Both need to be enrolled in the Stoutland Big Man Academy next year.

I like Raimann as well, Trevor Penning is another intriguing OT option day 2
