A RB I'm liking, a lesser Jonathan Taylor type back

Half of the blog probably sees a bunch of dancing behind the line, and lost yardage.

But he looks pretty good. He may not have 4.3 Jonathan Taylor speed. But he may have Derek Henry speed which is way more than a back that size needs. Looks like a beast. Good fallback plan if we cant land Robinson from bama.

And played completely differently. Tell you what. I'll log all his tackles at some point tomorrow and post them. Could be I'm wrong. Maybe we'll see.

I look at it this way. You can shorten the game and amount of possessions against playoff teams to try and even out the talent discrepancy and the total amount of possessions they get.

but let’s say they play the Bucs. Bucs get 7 possessions cause you are doing that. and score 4 tds and a field goal so 31 points cause our defense has yet to prove it can stop better QBs. Means the eagles are going to have to be pretty efficient in their drives, score tds not fgs and avoid punts cause you won’t get enough possessions to make up for that. Not impossible playing that way but in the playoffs usually get better coaching (i think Todd Bowles would have a game plan), opponents with much better talent  and when they have great QBs like a brady or rodgers you have to be perfect if you are gonna play that way and don’t have a very good defense (which against good QBs has played out) and aren’t getting short fields makes it much tougher

I understand your bolded point e-a-g-l-e-s eagles!, but while your assessment is spot on for weeks 1-7, I'm not sure that assessment is as accurate now.

One of things we clearly saw yesterday is that the level of talent on the Defense is not high enough to allow Jonathan Gannon the luxury of taking his foot off the gas pedal at all. He needs to be all aggressive, all the time. Aggressiveness has definitely paid off, and when Gannon stopped being all-out aggressive, the Saints very quickly rejuvenated their chances of winning the game.

One of the interesting stats in the game is that the Eagles had zero sacks and only 5 Quarterback hurries. I will be interested to see what the release times were for Siemian. I suspect that they were quite low/quick. Aggressive coverage by the DBs and the LBs reduces the options that a good QB with a quick release has.

In those first seven weeks Gannon gave way too much cushion to the receivers, with the result that there were plenty of options for "quick hitter plays."

Yesterday when Gannon dialed back on the aggressiveness in the 2nd Half, those quick hitter plays became available to Siemian, just as they would be available to one of your list of good QBs.

With all the above said, it is important to remember that a key thing to keep in mind in assessing the D's 2nd Half performance is that Slay had to leave the game.

Just pointing out a strong physique will only carry a running QB so far.  What matters is whether they avoid excessive contact.  Getting out of bounds and down to the ground is key.  If Hurts plays to contact (if) generally the body takes too much punishment to last — regardless of the body

Totally right.

The running and holding it too long make him much more likely to get hurt period

They don't run the same way and you know it. He gets down, slides, goes out of bounds, does all those un-RB-like things. Has he taken a shot, even once, this season when running?

I think he tried breaking tackles on a run twice on Sunday. Definitely did it once

Isaiah Spiller is my guy I've locked in on for a few years now.  Love watching him play.

Oh yeah, he's probably the best back coming out.

Vikings and 49ers play each other on Sunday, so one of those two drops down to the same 6 losses as the Eagles.  Saints host a Bills team that will have a very high incentive to win.  That could mean the Eagles' chances look much better this time next week.  Then the following week the Saints visit the Cowboys.

Bottom-line, the Eagles fate is in their own hands.

Watch him play every week, he's a pretty complete back, runs hard, decent receiver good blocker, can go between tackles has speed to bounce.

Actually started at byu on defense, switched to RB and never looked back.

I imagine highest he'd go is 2nd won't get out of the 4th, assuming he stays healthy and performs at combine up to expectations.

Tell it to Wilson, who takes far more punishment extending plays than Hurts takes running the ball.

Newton was 6'5, guys like that struggle to get low and present a big target to tacklers - no matter how big. Wentz is 6'5 240 and that didn't help him.

I agree ... go Fords, but how far they go is subject to some question this season.

Better than my other alma mater Hill School, who currently sit at 3-7.

There are a few.  I really like Kyren Williams at Notre Dame if he were to come out.  Kenneth Walker is putting on a show at Michigan State.

I really like Sean Tucker at Syracuse and Wisconsin's Braelon Allen, both Freshman.

I just want to keep a power back in the mix like Howard. Haven’t had that since Blount, those fall forward guys I like.

The Giants can't stop the Bucs' rush D. Good luck against us.

Beat EA, but Malvern went undefeated. They did alright.

Maybe I’m missing it but I also do not recall Hurts taking many hits.  There’s definitely plenty of volume so I suppose the chances must go up, but I see an intelligent runner that aims for the sidelines, gets down and minimizes contact.  I’m certain that style and size factor into likelihood of getting injured.  I do not grimace when I see him run as I did with Wentz where it just felt like a matter of time.

I don’t agree with the Hurts skepticism but in reading the responses I understand the argument, I just don’t agree.  I am completely fine with the team building around his strengths.  There’s a core of younger talent that I think is perfectly suited for his skill set.  Hurts certainly has plenty of room for growth, but what I love about him is that he’ll be the first to admit it and I’m sure, without question that he’ll put in the work.  Any Philly sports fan should really appreciate this.

Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters following the team’s big win over the Saints on Sunday, and talked about his big takeaway from the game, his message to Miles Sanders following the two fumbles, and why JJ Arcega-Whiteside’s 23-yard catch will be the team’s play of the game. He also admitted that he got too conservative once they had a big lead, letting New Orleans make their way back into the matchup.

One of the great strengths of the 2017 Eagles was that they had a real killer instinct.  They never let up until the final gun sounded.  That is something this team could benefit from.

Good to see you Matt!

The Giants OL is awful. Bucs with a 3 man rush. They somehow only get one double-team as Billy Price decided to block no one despite both LBs quickly dropping out.

I would point out yesterday the saints had Trevor siemian at QB. He is not good. His stats look a lot better than what he’s actually played. They consistently find themselves down midway through the fourth quarter by two possessions or more. Two of the last three weeks it’s been by three possessions. he is a back up quarterback. The Eagles have feasted on mediocre to bad quarterbacks. And I wouldn’t usually call Matt Ryan mediocre but that’s what he’s been this year. In the past never was said. Where is at this stage of his career he’s definitely mediocre if that. Frankly siemian doesn’t scare Gannon to make the throws he needs to beat many defenses. It’s why he’s a backup in the league

Also the saints were down their starting LT and starting RT. Without their top playmaker in kamara. And without michael Thomas all year. The team the Saints have to put out there on offense at this point in the season is not good. I tend to think they are going finish below .500 and implode

I think the reason why you saw the Eagles not give as much cushion yesterday is because the saints wide receivers are bad. Like 2016 eagles going out there with Dorial green Beckham, Bryce Triggs, head case agholor and Jordan Matthews. That might be actually better than what the Saints put out there yesterday cause at least we had ertz as a pass catcher. I would argue the Saints collection of offensive skill position players is bottom 5 in the league if kamara is not out there. smith, Calloway, trautman and Ingram is one of the worst collection of offensive skill talent. Add on down both of their tackles.

To me the lions and saints (currently) don’t have playmakers that can beat you consistently or scare you so the gameplan set up to be different knowing that. Whereas against the chargers I think you saw more of what they’re going to try to do against better talent because they actually have players that scare you that can beat you consistently. And a vastly better Qb in herbert.

In the second half they got up by 26 points and I think they decided to call off the dogs. thinking the game was basically over and were going to allow them to bleed some of the clock by keeping them in front of them. However they had some missed assignments.

Also the second half defense had some issues because in the fourth quarter the Eagles offense had 2 3-and-outs deep in their own territory and the Saints got great field position at the 34 and 39 yard line and capitalized for 10 points.  And the last TD they were just trying to milk the clock and the game was over. Besides miles sanders fumble, I thought the first 3 quarters The Eagles complementary football was fantastic. The fourth quarter came and was the complete opposite.

the eagles defense has played well this year against Matt Ryan (not of year’s past), Sam darnold, siemian, Goff, bridgewater and Jimmy G. They’ve played really bad against brady, carr, herbert, dak and mahomes. Over the last two years, the eagles have 9 wins. They’ve beaten Daniel jones, Tysom hill, dinucci, mullens, Ryan, Goff, bridgewater, Sam darnold and siemian. So i don’t think this is strictly just a Gannon thing. I think it’s the eagles really lack ideal talent on defense to be able to matchup and play the way he wants against the more talented teams in the nfl.

One of the reasons i want that week 18 game to be meaningful for both teams is to see how far the offense has come against a defense that’s top 10 in ppg allowed and top 10 against the run. And see how the defense holds up against Dak and that offense (assuming zeke, cooper and lamb are healthy).  If that happens to be a meaningful game week 18 we’re going to see just how far the Eagles have come from week 3 all the way to week 18.
