Well, the pendant should be a bit more specific.

We declared independence in 1776... so in our minds, we were born then.   According to the world, we weren't born until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.   1787 is when the Constitution was ratified, but the country was independent for 4 years prior to that under the Articles of Confederation.
