Are you talking specifically about cheeseteaks or both them and hoagies?  Because I agree, a bad Cheesesteak can ruin your day.  A bad italian hoagie is manageable.

Maybe some people consider a cheesteak a type of a hoagie.  I don't.  Maybe that's me.

I mean cheesesteaks and hoagies, but primarily cheesesteaks.   When traveling outside of this area, there are other options available and I just go that direction.  I limit both my cheesesteak and hoagie intake.   Cheesesteaks for obvious reasons, and hoagies for excessive salt (I don't do as much deli meat anymore.).

A cheesesteak is its own thing.  A hoagie is supposed to be cold.

I love a good Philly cheesesteak and I love a nice 12 oz filet from a high end steakhouse.  But if you sliced up a $200 kobe beef filet and made it into a cheesesteak, that's not the way to do a cheesesteak either (didn't that overrated Star restaurant do that?)  Cheesesteaks just don't have the highest quality meat in them.  But the proper shredded texture that fits your choice, from your favorite place around the corner, is still the best way, IMO.

I go for the stickball there. Ham and salami with provolone.  Usually not on the menu at my local one but they make it anyway.

Jersey Mike's is very good.

Jersey Mike's is OK.  I mean it would be a C+ for their subs and a C- for their steak sandwich in the Philly area.  They only use american on their steak sandwiches and the have very little in the way of meat.  The roll is pretty good.  Their deli meats and toppings are good.  They just opened a Capriotti's in Cary, NC.  I am going to have to make a trip to them.

I frequent Arizona.  So, I'm familiar with the local Mexican fare.  It is better there, no doubt, but I can still find some very good stuff here... the local tomatoes here will rival anything California has to offer, but its limited by season.  Can't argue about the avocados though... but my understanding is that avocados don't actually ever ripen on the tree.  Not sure if that's true.

That is true. Avocados are like bananas in terms of ripening. Although bananas need to be gassed to start  the ripening process

It is a tree that belongs to flower type trees. Some people call it flower, and some call it a tree. But at the local farmers market, where i shop, it is 2 hours from picked in the field.

Good highlights.  My opinion on Petersen has taken a plunge however since he just basically copied and pasted other journalists.

I liked him better when he would post videos and give breakdowns while talking at 100 mph. He since has fallen into the Eagles twitter trap

I think that's a safe bet.  Unfortunately, unless I want to wait to travel back to the area, I do have to buy hoagies and cheesesteaks outside of the Philly area.  Of course, it's not something I am buying very often.

You can have them sub in provolone. It's not like stuff back home, but it's better than Subway.

Cafe Rio used to be good, but it has gone to crap lately.

100 times better than Subway.

The only way to get good Mexican on the East Coast is to find the places owned and operated by Mexicans.  They exist, but they are not chains.

I recommend Taco Riendo at 5th and Thompson. It is Mexican-owned. Xolo in  Bryn Mawr is also Mexican owned. Both have excellent burritos. The tacos at Taco Riendo are better. My niece by marriage is half Mexican and her mother is full-blooded. She sneers at Taco Bell etc., but when we took her to Taco Riendo she kept saying, "Authenica, authentica." They serve Cafe de Olla, very hard to find north of the border - at least in the east. Hot, sweet, delicious.

Expensive though. Like $15 here for a large, but I haven't been home in years, so that could be the going rate.

And when you get a few dozen miles west of Philly, you encounter grinders, which are hot subs.

I have one pizza shop that makes great cheese steaks just had one for the eagles game Sunday. They use real sliced steak and amaroso rolls ( go to hell of you don't like amaroso rolls lol)

It was mostly the cold subs I was speaking of when talking about not having any real delis around here.

Heckys in Hamburg. Not only a good sandwich joint.  Delicious fresh cut fries and great great cheesesteak

Like I said... I'm biased and spoiled living here.   On the flip side, I wouldn't take a person from Arizona to a Mexican spot around here, because they can get better Mexican at home.  So, we'd go to Philly spots.  Or something where neither of us knows better.  😜

Tomatoes are another item that will ripen over time,  if held at the proper temp.  Again, we can get good tomatoes but they aren't considered "local".  The "local" marketing tool is a crock of ish most of the time.  I am dealing with it here in NC and their supposed local apple crop.  Which is garbage.  But they think it's the best, because it's "Got To Be NC".

Yup, my chain has a local program and it's a joke. We will get a few good batches of tomatoes, peppers, corn and cucs from Lancaster county and after a week they are coming from Florida or Mexico. The local growing season in PA is to short to establish any real local quality for an extended period of time. The beefsteak and cluster tomatoes were always from a hot house in Canada that are pumped for of crap to survive shipping better which in turn makes them tasteless
