I did laugh when the country of food stodge, Ireland, decided that Subway Bread wasn't bread because it had too much sugar in it.  It says a lot about the practices of those chain restaurants.

A lot of fast food places are getting hammered for those practices these days. Burger king even just announced they are banning 11 ingredients they put in their food. I can only imagine what goes into their bacon cheeseburgers for 1 dollar.

Being in the south, it's all about the Publix deli subs with the Boars Head meat and cheeses.

Jersey Mike's is a close second.

Yup, we don't call them Publix here in KS or in UT, but when I was in Georgia my buddy was like hey you want to get a sandwich at Publix, and I was like what the heck is a Publix???

Turns out it was just a grocery store deli, yeah I mentioned boar's head earlier, custom meats and cheeses and condiments, make their own pickles, great stuff!

I love a good Philly cheesesteak and I love a nice 12 oz filet from a high end steakhouse.  But if you sliced up a $200 kobe beef filet and made it into a cheesesteak, that's not the way to do a cheesesteak either (didn't that overrated Star restaurant do that?)  Cheesesteaks just don't have the highest quality meat in them.  But the proper shredded texture that fits your choice, from your favorite place around the corner, is still the best way, IMO.

This place started popups in the spring at different breweries and restaurants in Charlotte, and it's by far the best cheesesteak I've ever had in NC.  Their entire crew is from Philly.  However, it tastes like their meat is actually a little too high in quality.  I'm hoping they raised enough money for their brick and mortar to open this fall, because other than that it's the closest thing I've had outside of Philly.

Mastronardi (Sunset label) and Pure Flavor are two of the Canadian hot houses that do some nice stuff.  I think Mastronardi has a building down in Florida as well.  And I know there will be a huge produce cross dock hub breaking ground in SC that Mastronardi is going to be a large tenant of.  I’m definitely keeping an eye on that for any regional sales jobs coming.  You wanna see a cool up and coming company.  Check these guys out.   Wave of the future.

That is awesome... Before I clicked on the link though I immediately thought of a place in New Jersey that is doing all indoor farming of produce and it was the future so that is what I was expecting when I opened the link. I can't remember who the one is in Jersey doing the same concept though.

Yes sunset that is the other one I was drawing a blank on that name.

:offtopic: One of my favorites, RIP

Unfortunately I'm getting to the age where many of the comedians I watched as a kid are no longer with us.  Growing up in Canada there was a great pipeline of comedy talent touring in the 70s and 80s.  Norm MacDonald, Mike MacDonald was also excellent, Murray Langston (The Unknown Comic, who performed with a grocery bag over his head), of course the SCTV guys Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, and John Candy.  Four On The Floor was a great sketch comedy series that never caught on in the US.

What the hell lol. You mentioned fresh cut fries, the place I'm talking about has them and great cheesesteaks. I can't back you now cause I never had a hecky or heard of them and I live 10 minutes from Hamburg lol

Go and report back. My credibility is on the line. Do it asap.

It's got an industrial vibe inside and things served in square plates.  Hazleton fancy.

Turn left at the light off 60 at cabelas so you go behind taco bell and the freedom dealership. Follow that road to the traffic light at the T in the road. Make another left. I don't recall anymore but I'm thinking that's main street. Heckys is a few blocks up, on the left.

I looked it up, it does look like a good place. I'm always down there for food so I'll give that a shot next. I don't go right in town much anymore though it's always backed up. Probably why I never took notice cause I'm usually just trying to get through to the other side.

It's actually state street but basically that main road.  Try it for my cred. And you won't regret it either.

A lot of foodservice distributors and restaurants on the east coast use fresh Hass avocados from Mexico or CA.  Which are the best.  Unripe avocados, kept at the right temp can last a long long time, 30-60 days at least.  Then when they are stored at the proper temp (55 degrees) they start to give off ethylene and start to ripen.  Like bananas and other fruits.  So no, we can get good fresh avocados on the east coast.  It's just not consider "local".  I was a produce manager for a couple large foodservice  distributors in Western Pa and we went through pallets of them a week.  We also can get them at the grocery store on the east coast.  Again, it's always best to get them soft and use them right away or get them green and ripen them yourself.  But never put them in the fridge, when they are hard.  Also never buy Florida avocados.  They taste terrible and are watery.

As far as tomatoes are concerned.  Yeah, we can get tomatoes all up and down the east coast.  My home state (NJ) is known for tomatoes but they usually are beefsteaks or vine ripes.  The best tomatoes for salsa or pico are roma (plums).  And most of the food distributors and grocers get them from florida when their crop is ready.  There are also a lot of tomatoes on the east coast from Mexico.  Tomatoes are another item that will ripen over time,  if held at the proper temp.  Again, we can get good tomatoes but they aren't considered "local".  The "local" marketing tool is a crock of ish most of the time.  I am dealing with it here in NC and their supposed local apple crop.  Which is garbage.  But they think it's the best, because it's "Got To Be NC".

Wanna ripen a tomato, avocado or banana faster?  Put them in a paper bag with one of the other.  They'll feed off each other.

Are there any big orchard producers in NC? I think when you get up to the mountains and buy them directly or if there's a grower that comes to the local farmer's market  they're pretty good in season.  The ones that they list as local that are sold in stores are usually not so great.

Based on your palate and food preferences, I'm guessing the cheesesteak is a stale roll  filled with Alpo dog food, and the fries are shipped over from burger king.

Well that's encouraging - not a Whiz person but I will hopefully get to try it when I'm there for the game.

We might give it a try when we come down for the Eagles game next month.  We’re staying at Pinehurst.  I just checked the website.  What the hell is a pop up cheesesteak? Is that not a restaurant

I assume it's a food truck.  Hopefully - it will be near the game.  I think my plan is going to be park up near UNCC and take the light rail in from there.

Henderson not Hendersonville? There's nothing I would want out of Henderson.

Go try it.  You are very wrong.

My food pyramid has 2 food groups. Cheesesteaks and pizza. I am reliable when it comes to those things.
