Article on coaching/GM hiring cycle

Thought this was a good read, and there's a tidbit relating to Howie:

Sportsology did a deep dive on the 57 general manager openings in the NFL since 2010. The numbers paint a picture of owners’ lack of creativity: 75 percent of the hires were former NFL scouts, and 70 percent of all hires came from a team that had made a Super Bowl during their tenure. This means that if you are a senior scout with a past Super Bowl participant, you are likely to be firmly in the mix. The numbers get more interesting from there. The data showed that teams with GMs from scouting backgrounds won less than those with GMs who had a salary cap and football operations background, a group that includes New Orleans’s Mickey Loomis, Buffalo’s Brandon Beane, and Philadelphia’s Howie Roseman. There are small sample sizes when you’re dealing with over a decade of hires in a 32-team league, but it’s important to point out that the data shows no real difference in winning percentage between GMs who came from a Super Bowl team and those who did not.

That's what small sample sizes do for you - the tests have low power.

Before. It’s been a lingering ankle issue he’s had for most of the season that caused him to miss some games. I’m guessing the specialist was in New York and it’s just a coincidence that’s also where it all went down.

But then how can they say they were unaware?

Pickens is a beast though.

It’s only one play - and here he’d be playing 20 yards upfield in the shell. Do you want him playing the slot with gap responsibilities or drop him in the box - maybe not as much…

Rounds 2 and 3 of this draft might be loaded. I’m starting to get excited.

I start to get excited... then remember who is making the picks, and I lose the excitement.

Reminder... Eagles haven't had successful 1st round picks back to back since 2012 & 2013.  And both of those picks were top 12.  Eagles might get one pick in the top 12... but when you look at what they have done with picks in the late teens and 20s... it's not very exciting.  2nd round picks have also been rather miss, rather than hit.

Under Roseman (if you consider him the guy to really be making the calls going back to when Andy Reid was here):

1st round:
2010 - Graham - #13
2011 - Watkins - #23
2012 - Cox - #12
2013 - Johnson - #4
2014 - Marcus Smith - #26
2015 - Nelson Agholor - #20
2016 - Carson Wentz - #2
2017 - Derek Barnett - #14
2018 - N/A
2019 - Andre Dillard - #22
2020 - Jalen Reagor - #21
2021 - Davonta Smith - #10

See a pattern?  Basically, any pick after #13 is one that doesn't do a whole lot.   Highest pick the Eagles have in the first round this year... Currently #14.  Eagles other two picks sit at #19 and #21.

And sadly... the 2nd round isn't much better.
Nate Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Mychal Kendricks, Zach Ertz, Jordan Matthews, Eric Rowe, Sidney Jones, Dallas Goedert, Miles Sanders, Jalen Hurts, Landon Dickerson.

Some of these picks were brutally bad.

This is also true for most teams. First round picks have a 50-50 shot at working out...

I think you are on firm ground there.

It's hysterical that you use that example. I know where that facility is. and my GF's cousin owns the bar next to PPG arena.

Cranberry is out of Pittsburgh City limits and is about 35 minutes from PPG Areana

Voorhees is out side of Philadelphia City limits and is about 20-25 minutes from the Wells Fargo Center.

Whats the difference?

Side note, The flyers host events there, bring in tourism there, Host tournaments, the Philly Wings(lacrosse) practice there, theres been 2 major hotels built next to the facility. ETC ETC.  Also for connivence  and ease, a lot of teams will stay in South jersey rather than staying in Philly when playing Philly teams

I dont think people realize a TON of players from all 4 sports teams live in South Jersey and stay after the retire in south jersey. It's nice, cleaner, more tax friendly for there lifestyle.

The main hub for flyers youth is also out of the Skatezone voorhees facility. My son and I play in voorhees as well as another south jersey rink

Math nerds are hurting sports.

Is Calvin Ridley supposed to be a FA??

Id be all for that move.  Use the draft for defense.

he’s on his fifth year option next year and needs an extension after that.

There are rumors that Ridley and the Falcons are gonna go separate ways this offseason.

I think he has one year left for like $11M. No breaks on this deal - trade a high pick for a not-cheap salary, and then on the hook for an extension.  How good is Chark?

Really? I thought he was horrible against Michigan State. Just horrible.

If Chark is available Id take him over paying for Ridley, no doubt

Chark would actually be a far better compliment to Smith IMO anyway

Is anyone really a compliment to Smith and Goedert.  3rd read may as well be on the sidelines.

last four games:

M Jones:  58.2% 5-4  78.2 rating

Lawrence:  61.8%  1-7  61.8 rating

Tua 62.9%  5-4  81.1 rating

Wilson 54.2%  2-0  77.4 rating

Fields 58.0%  4-3  84.0 rating

Mills 68.1%  6-2  96.2 (#67 in the draft) - Watson who?

Hurts 66.7% 3-1  103.0  (last three games after the Jets, when Siri opened up the offense for him)

There's too much noise to take this seriously, but if these other young QBs can be expected to make a jump next year, same applies to Hurts, he's far from a finished product.

Tua is the only valid comp here -- he's the only other 2nd-year player.

If you want to compare rookies, then Hurts was 52% comp, 1-3, and 77.6 rating

The problem with Ridley isn't the player, but the contract. He's played like a top 10 WR, but he also missed basically the entire year with mental health issues. I have no idea how to value that.

I like that he’s had a 1000 yard season, in JAX!, is only 25 and has the right size/speed combo. He did break his ankle, but that doesn’t resonate with me as a long term issue.

But I haven’t soured on Quez yet as I think he does get open and is cheap. In terms of WR need, I’m still thinking slot (since Reagor looks like a gadget guy/#5 at best).

Given the need to pay more moderately priced FAs this offseason I agree.

Ideally youd get another all around WR who can play anywhere, run all the routes, etc.

But we cant pay for an Adams or Ridley in a trade, and extension.

Hopefully in that moderate price range we can get Chark. Chark makes a lot of sense as a field stretcher to compliment Smith. Teams will have to decide which side gets safety help. Smith will kill them if hes 1 on 1 all game. Chark will beat them over the top if theres no safety on his side. And if they want to play 2 deep, our running game will just keep getting huge chunks.

And Hurts numbers the last 3 games against two of the worst teams in the NFL, and one game against Washington was after they were ravaged by Covid.
