My game lineup today is Pitt/Balt. and  NYG/Wash.   Garbage.

But, there's no great 1 PM game today.   At 4:25 I get 49ers/LAR.  Not too bad, I guess.

The advantage of having the package.  I get any game I want at any point and backwards for several years.  All preseason, all regular season, all playoffs, all in 40 mins, 2:20, coaches view, and just the highlights.  Used to be able to select Reese/Quick but no more.  Spanish is still available :P

few observations from that debacle , we have no depth at DB , BACKER and DE, only 3 WR's (smith, watkins and ward) the rest should be cut. OL has decent depth . gainwell , huntley and ward should be the return men.. team needs to add DE , BACKER , S , CB , WR and RB in the draft early and a vet WR. with that many holes i'm surprised the team is in the wild card. howie needs to  step back from the talent evaluation

Pretty scary thought considering they've had 8-9 CB on the 53 all year.  They need help across the board on defense.

I thought Malveuax flashed at DE.  Could be a good depth player next year.  Has nice size too.  Noticed him more than Kerrigan that's for sure.

I am not overjoyed that Howie remains entrenched.  Prove me wrong, Howie.   Show us all that you can draft defense, draft in the first round outside of the top 13... and not overpay your own players to retain them indefinitely, or restructure them constantly to eat up cap flexibility.   Stick to 2nd contracts... and steer clear of those dangerous 3rd contracts, at least 3rd contracts that lock the team into big money and commitments to players.

Howie has had issues recently.  But he also has shown the ability to be a really good GM.

Although he failed at keeping the window open, I am comfortable giving him an opportunity to "build" again.

high bar

You can bury the Dolphins for the next 10+ years if they fire Flores. He's one of the only good things they have going on.

I'm not, but I don't get to make that call.   So, I have to hope that Howie can change his spots.  Hope that somehow now he can find defensive players in the draft... and can somehow draft in the mid-teens/20s as we will have at least 2 picks, maybe 3 in that area.

Jags are a lock today.

He's one of the few guys I'd consider to replace Gannon with right now.  But I expect Gannon back either way.

Sure doesn't show it with his NFL throws.  That first completion to DeVonta was severely underthrown.

That would be a home run for sure, but definitely unrealistic.

I promised to reevaluate my position on Howie at the end of the year, if the Eagles won more than 6 games.   So, it is time to do so...

This roster is stronger than I thought it was... but not that much stronger.   This team proved that it is well coached, that they can lean on the strength of the team, and can ride that to wins against weak teams.  The OL is that strength, which really isn't that surprising given that they have the best OL coach in the league, possibly in all of football working here.  Last night really just solidified that strength.  Against the Dallas starting DL, the Eagles' backup OL, even to the 3rd string managed to provide running room for our 3rd and 4th string RBs, and even provided decent (but not great) pass protection - La'Raven Clark was pretty bad though.  Dickerson made it through his rookie season, which is encouraging, but still has a ways to go to prove he's durable.   Driscoll, on the other hand, as nice a depth piece as he appears to be, is becoming an injury concern in his own right.  Seumalo is becoming an injury concern as well... so the OL continues to need some more pieces added, though it should likely not be a target in Rounds 1 or 2.

So, when we look at the entirety of the roster, we have a team that I would likely put in the middle third of the NFL.  This is definitely not a top third team right now.  And I'd likely say that it is even more in the range of the 20th best roster, than it is closer to the middle of the league.  The defense continues to be weak... very weak.  This defensive roster is the thing that I believe is primarily causing Gannon to be handcuffed.  The offense has a really good running game, due to the OL dominance.  The WR corps is still a massive disappointment overall.  With the investments made, this WR corps should be in the top half of the league in terms of their effectiveness or efficiency... but instead they are likely one of the worst in the league.  They have Smith... and we still have the hope in Watkins, though he still has a lot to prove himself.  I don't think he's a #2 WR, I think he's a #3 or #4.  Which is fine, but the hole at #2 remains, and Reagor continues to disappoint.  JJAW continues to disappoint.  Those 'misses' are harbingers and concerns for the future that Howie can fix that position in the future.  RB is ok, but if this is going to be a power running team, the RBs need upgrading.  Sanders is nice, but continues to miss too many games.  Scott is a nice backup, but needs to be upgraded.  Howard is a shell of what he was, and is also becoming more injury prone.  They need to look for some more RB talent in the draft this year and get younger, stronger and healthier at RB immediately.

Howie is by no means the worst GM in the NFL, and I've never claimed he was.  But, he sure isn't in the best either.  We could do worse.  We could also do better.  More importantly, we could get someone who actually drafts defensive players and WRs.

This team exceeded the expectations of many this year.  But unless the Saints win today, they get to wear the crown as the playoff team with the worst ever record against 0.500 or better teams in NFL history... 0-7.  That's a concern.   Good news is they basically swept the bad teams they faced (one Giants' game excepted), but also got swept by every good team they faced.  And even that Saints game, which could buoy that record all the way to 1-7... and that was basically only a win because they were matched up against Trevor Siemian at QB.

I am not overjoyed that Howie remains entrenched.  Prove me wrong, Howie.   Show us all that you can draft defense, draft in the first round outside of the top 13... and not overpay your own players to retain them indefinitely, or restructure them constantly to eat up cap flexibility.   Stick to 2nd contracts... and steer clear of those dangerous 3rd contracts, at least 3rd contracts that lock the team into big money and commitments to players.

thats about as level headed as youve been about him in quite some time. I might slant things a bit more positive, but I dont think youre tilting all the way to the extreme negative anymore.

Its good to see you back with rationality. Welcome back.

One thing I think should be pointed out in the eval of Howie, is that our HC who has done a HELL of a job, was a Howie hire. And no one trusted he and Lurie to do that and choose the right guy. They came out of the gates too pass heavy and no one trusted that Siri had leeway to change up the offensive plan. And, he did. So Howie deserves some credit not just on a roster that was better than people thought (albeit still with some glaring holes). But also with a coach who no one trusted him to hire. Who people underestimated long before a game was ever played. And for the fact that Howie did not disallow Siri to make the necessary changes that turned this season around.

Weight training for a QB might help durability in taking hits, but it won’t help or guard against ankle, knee, achilles injuries.  Funny that the most durable QBs weren’t muscular guys — Favre, Eli, etc.

Brady, Montanna, Young, Peyton, Brees the list goes on and on.

Either Hurts is a top 15 QB or we have a top 15 roster.

We can't have bad QB play, bad roster and a good point differential.

Meh... I've recognized that not everything Howie has done has been bad... but the amount of things he has done wrong recently overwhelmed them in such scale that it was hard to see the positives for all the negatives.  I held out hope that Howie would eventually be held responsible for his failures... but it seems that will never happen.

That said... this draft has me very concerned.  It could turn out really well for this team, but only if Howie can do the thing he's never done as a GM... find talent in the 15-25 range.  He needs to do it twice...
