This is classic prisoners dilemma lol. If you both let the clock run out you both get the best mutual option. But LA didn’t know LV wouldn’t have tried a long FG there if they stopped them on 3rd down, so LA had to call a TO there to force LVs hand.

I have no doubt Carlson could've made the kick. But there is no reason to risk a block in that situation.

There was no risk in getting it blocked at the end of the game just now? There’s always that risk. could’ve said that just now before kicking a 47 yard field goal. That’s not a chip shot field goal

If Collingsworth did the math and explained it to the national audience, this whole fiasco wouldn't have gotten any legs.

They knew a tie was a fine outcome but that a win was optimal for playoff matchups. There was no reason to hurry or be aggressive. They could afford to slow play it.

I agree. And in knowing that, Staley's decision made the worst possible outcome for the Chargers more of a possibility. It was a bad decision. And if his defense wasn't set, he's a defensive coach that's on him too.

Staley: "My mindset was make the field goal as long as possible.”

Still, if that's the defensive package you wanted on the field, he's clueless. Why even have a safety back there at all? They weren't passing.

No.  They called a timeout to set up the defense.

THE TIMEOUT DID NOT IMPACT THE LENGTH OF THE GAME.

Oh come on, you don't run to set up a 56-yard FG.

That's BEFORE the timeout.

See how little time is remaining on the play clock.  He wasn't calling the timeout to preserve time.

No, no, no. He called a TO with like 4 seconds on the play clock to put in personnel that would match up better against the run.

The decision was good. The outcome was bad.

That pic is before the TO.

You have a screenshot of the defensive alignment before the first down?

They completely screwed up the call. That is the ONLY reason we’re talking about the timeout.

Likely the most logical thinking.

The chargers would’ve likely needed a no gain (still think they would’ve kicked it if there was like 3 second left) or loss of yards in order to force the raiders to run it out.

Michaels and Collinsworth COMPLETELY botched the call. That’s the only reason we’re even discussing it.

I went back and checked. Post timeout it was a little better, but not much. The Raiders put someone in motion and the defender trailed them to open up the middle of the field.

They were running trying to get some extra yards to make it a more doable field goal. However if they got nothing, Carlson has made 55 and 56 this year. If they run and get 3 yards it’s a 53 yarder. You’re telling me they don’t believe Carlson who is 9 of Fing 10 in his last 10 attempts from 50+ could make it and they didn’t trust him? Please.

Agreed. But if they stopped the Raiders on 3rd down Staley 100% would have called a timeout on 4th down to leave about 30 seconds left. Because he doesn’t know if the Raiders are kicking or letting the clock run.

So hed call a timeout to force LV to punt on 4th down and the game would have ended with an LA run or kneel.

And Gary Anderson was perfect on FGs in 1998. You don't plan on a kicker making a 50+ yard FG when you don't even need to win the freaking game. Are you serious right now?
