Well, there is some truth the that, if you study cultural history and read some of the legislation. Until 1848, except in widowhood, women really couldn’t own property and were limited in business opportunities.  Look closely at some of the witch trials and who were accused, women in possession of property. Patriarchal if you desire but misogynistic fits too.

Some people overlook indenture and its place in our history but compare laws to indenture to laws on slavery. We see people declared as Freemen early in colonial records. But we had states that prohibited a black man from owning property, while having laws protecting the indentured from slavery (although company store controlled towns sure put that to the challenge.)

Maybe look at schools like the Carlisle school to get an idea of how we viewed native Indian cultures. Same with the reservations.  Basically to convert natives to European way of life.   Look at the whole giving and taking that occurred with land for reservations.

Look at the early treatment of the Scots and Irish.  No coincidence those folk were on the borders of the wilderness.  Get out to Huntington in PA and read about the burning of settlements because they were pushing the boundaries of what was allowed after the French Indian War.  We read about the tea party but westward expansion was a focus of the Revolutionary War for many.  Look at Irish in the Civil War having bartered to take a draftee’s place, usually of English decent.

Then look at the conflict between Irish and freed slaves after the war, especially in the Panic year over jobs.  We’ve seen that here with immigrants too, from the Chinese Exclusion Act to quotas on southern and Eastern Europeans.  Those colorful words that Archie Bunker used, had a background in turn of the century immigration.  The newest being looked down on.  We saw some of that, although not widely discussed, between Blacks and Hispanic immigrants and Asians.

While Penn welcomed all religions, don’t forget about Williams being kicked out of Massachusetts.  Look at the fact that it wasn’t until 1960 that we had a Catholic President and are only on our second.  Yes, discrimination against Catholics and Jews was a real thing.  Atheists and Agnostics weren’t really free to espouse their beliefs without facing discrimination.

Look at our history on treatment of the LBGQT community.  The decisions against and, yes, for discrimination are recent and ongoing.

So, yes, all of those things shaped the America we have today.  Hell it shaped my family. It helps with making our country and society diverse and improving all the time.  That’s not woke, that’s our history, warts and all.  I can cite to experiences with much of the above from my own extended family history and not always on the better side.

"Woke” seems to have a very negative connotation for you.  Not sure I truly understand. Some of the extremes you point to do not seem awake to me at all but rather stifling of thought and speech.  Well, the fascists on the left scare me as much as the fascists on the right.  But there is a difference between culling speech and thought on either side and deliberately not understanding our true history and favoring ignorance over knowledge is just as dangerous as I see it.  I believe, as an academic, that you are railing against the former and not the latter.

Wokeism is born from Postmodernism and its spawn, Critical Theory. Postmodernism holds that there are no objective truths (science and mathematics be damned) and that knowledge only accrues through language. If you control language, then you control truth. Lived experience (by anyone) is more valuable than is scientific demonstration and reason.  Critical Theory views ALL of human interactions as a power struggle between the oppressed and the oppressors. Critical Race Theory sees only race as the demarcation between the oppressed and oppressors.

Wokeism has taken these rather arcane academic views and radicalized and politicized them. Adherents of wokeism tend to be dogmatic, illiberal, and devout. Wokeism has many of the hallmarks of religion (https://www.thedailybeast.com/antiracism-our-flawed-new-religion). Of course, there is also crass profiteering - see DeAngelo and Kendi.

As for the rest, the American experience is not without grievous flaws and when measured against some abstract, perfect ideal, it comes up short. The relevant comparison, I would argue, is to other systems devised and implemented throughout the course of history.

I think the point is that the 1619 Project misrepresented the views of many of the Founders.

I find it difficult to believe that the founders were misrepresented.

The guy Implies that many of the founders were against slavery yet everyone of them including the 1st 9 president owned slaves.

At one point Jefferson enslaved over 600 people.

Even Ben Franklin had a few slaves before changing his tune

Washington was the only president to ever free all his slaves

While many of the founders may have changed their tunes or their views not many if them changed their actions as many still maintained slaves.

I realize back then it was a socially acceptable practice and there are those out there that would like to wipe the face of America clean of any monument of anyone that ever owned a slave and I'm not one of those and I'm not also of the crowd that thinks the founders should be immortalized in the annals of time, they were men who did the best with what they had and knew at the time and like us all were not perfect or above reproach.

You are likely right.   And I read earlier you are a lot more than just a racist...  You really should be more careful what you post online.

I'd like to see something over the deep middle... maybe a deep crossing pattern just for fun.  I'd like to see the middle of the field get exploited.  But, I think we will see Brady put up 40+ on this defense, and this offense get some garbage time points, and end up in the range of about 28 points.

Just call me Gruden

Without Washington there is no USA. Regardless of how he personally would have felt, he is deserving of much more than a statue

BUT, he also owned slaves.   Hence why I asked, should we hold him to the same revisionist history standard of being a racist?

G Dubs is overrated, he was chosen because he was the tallest dude in the meeting.   Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful Ben Simmons wasn’t there.

John Adams, one of the three guys responsible for the writing of the Declaration of Independence, gets no credit. Jefferson was the secretary, Ben was cross dressing in the latest Paris stylings meanwhile, Adams didn’t have slaves, he was the 2nd president and the nations first credited ambulance chaser and he can’t even get on Monopoly money.    Even his cuz has a Beer named after him.

We are going to be talking playoffs in December.  No necessarily making them.  But we'll be in the mix.

Dallas, GB, TB, Arizona, and LAR are essentially locks.  But what about the other TWO wild card spots?  Wilson's injury puts Seattle into question.  None of the other teams have impressed.  If we take care of business against teams without pro bowl QBs, we have a chance.

They want people to watch.

Speaking of sports media.  Now that ESPN is carrying NHL games, It's nice that they talk about hockey on their website now for the first time in 15 years.  Even last night, with baseball playoffs, the first page was all about NHL opening night.  They are so GD distorted with their coverage it's ridiculous.

hockey sucks

As for the game, I'm not sure there is a single matchup that's in our favor. People will point to the weak secondary, but that means you need to rely on Hurts to make them pay, and we've seen against the 49ers and Panthers that it's not likely. We probably won't be able to run the ball at all either. It's a short week so I don't expect to see anything new on offense. It will be 45+ passes to try to keep up which will lead to more mistakes than execution.

On the defense side, I think their DL is going to dominate. Vea will collapse the pocket from the middle. After a few times Hurts will get razzled and start escaping the pocket way too early and not keeping his eyes downfield. I'm not really concerned about Jones or Fournette at all, but when they have Brown, Godwin, Evans and Howard and we have no chance at man coverage, we are going back to sitting in zone with two DEEP safeties. Brady is going to just pick apart that all game long. I think this has the potential to be as ugly if not more than the Dallas game.

Woah, easy there big spender

Kelce's comments make me think it's more so something going on with Lane than a family member of Lane's.

"I’ve talked to Lane, I’ve met with him. I just wish the best for him,” Kelce said. "Everybody in here loves that guy. He’s such a great personality, a great person to be around, a guy that really makes our room a lot more fun, a lot more energetic. He’s obviously a great football player.”

See, everyone disses John Adams. His cousin probably had slaves picking barley for his beer.  So he defended the British soldiers in a shooting, even Gacy had a defense lawyer.

If it was a family member he'd probably not be with the team.

Might be having some kind of mental, anxiety issue like what Brooks went thru.

Not a blackout game

Sounds like Rattler was benched. He's taking 2nd team scrimmage reps. Take him off the draft board.

Bet he transfers in the offseason to Alabama and we take him with a 2nd round pick in 2023.

Ok...thought they said the other day he was in the building?  Regardless, if it was a family issue,  I'd think he'd be with his family.

A reporter shouldn't be having his source as the editor of his story. That kinda goes against all journalistic integrity.
