Ok so the two countries not in NATO that got attacked by Russia are now somehow a warning sign for the other countries currently in NATO (who haven't been attacked) to jump ship and leave NATO? Have I got that right?

Which he did. Perhaps he could have tried harder to strongarm Germany into submitting to stronger sanctions after the invasion. But other than that there's literally nothing short of getting involved in a hot war that would have stopped Putin. This is where Biden deserves blame. There was a statement from the German finance minister today about needing more time to evaluate removing Russia from SWIFT. What the hell have you been doing for the last month? As I said yesterday, the sanction response so far has been underwhelming. We didn't hit energy or metals, and we didn't hit Putin or SWIFT. And if the answer is that Germany wouldn't go along, well...that's the job of the leader of the free world, to bend consensus and find a way to get what is required. Give the Germans financial support, or find a way to fill the gap with LNG. Hell, I'd just say "remember 1933-1945 guys? You owe the world still." Biden and the administration played it well leading up to the invasion, but they should have acted much more forcefully yesterday. They should have been shaping consensus for the last month, and instead it seems, despite hyper accurate intelligence, we were still caught flat-footed on the response.

Thank F we've got geopolitical geniuses like you and Vikas to point out the errors with such reasoned arguments as "wat?" and 'I decided not to respond' If you think Biden or any US president is going to airlift a US army group into Europe to fight Russia out of places like Albania, Bulgaria or Hungary, which is what a proper NATO response would require, I don't know what to tell you, I can pretty much guarantee the earliest point NATO would jump in is maybe Poland, because then he'd be on the border of NATO's old money.

Yes, we will fulfill our article five obligations. Because if we don't for a country we deem "unimportant," then that emboldens Putin to go after more NATO countries. The Europeans will demand action. 2. You said that this would cause countries to LEAVE NATO. Even if you are right (spoiler: you aren't) that the US and western Europe won't honor their obligations to a place like Albania, there is still no reason for them to leave NATO. Even if it is just a 1% chance that NATO would defend them, it's 0% if they leave. There's no benefit to leaving since Putin has shown that he will invade countries not part of NATO. It's utterly illogical and insane.

Have I got that right? Actually Georgia had signed preliminary agreements to join NATO in 2008 right before Russia annexed the majority ethnic Russian bits of South Ossetia and Abkhazia but do carry on, NATO sent Condoleeza Rice to tell them to sign the ceasefire, now Ukraine who have been getting guns and military aid from NATO, are now getting phone calls from NATO leaders telling them eh no we won't be riding to the rescue but you be strong now. Jesus Christ do you need a diagram, if the cost of peace is removing NATO military infrastructure from Ukraine's neighbours which is the sticking point, they'll promise to do it, they already did it in Minsk and then decided to renege, you can guarantee a country's independence without having them as formal members of NATO.

They should have had all of this worked out ahead of time. Instead of allowing western Europe to pretend it wasnt going to happen, he should have planned ahead. But that requires leadership and foresight Edit:. Maybe this is what you meant by "shaping consensus"
