Being "open to it" isn't committing to do it. Hold the vote and make them stand alone in blocking it. That might get them to fold. 1. I love that the reply included Ron Swanson in the quote. 2. Germany is the key. They fall everyone else falls in line or is frankly irrelevant.

If they're publicly stating they're open to it and Biden doesn't get them across the line it's a total fail. It is worth recalling how Russia occupied part of Germany. They are going to be very careful.

Their fear must be that sanctioning the Russian energy markets, or cutting them off from SWIFT, will stop the flow of natural gas. And they may be right -- although I do wonder if Gazprom would keep shipping regardless because they would suffer irreparable damage as well. The failure is finding a way to work the problem and get Germany over the goal line. Maybe we dedicate all US LNG exports to Germany. And we allow them to keep buying Russian gas during a transition period until we can fill the gap. Or...we just flat out bribe them with financial assistance. If that all fails, bring out the stick -- do this, or the USA might start re-assessing its commitment to NATO. The Germans fear the Russians more than most (for obvious historical reasons). If they think we'd really back away from Europe, they'd be screwed. Like I said -- the POTUS is the leader of the free world, and leaders lead. If Biden didn't want a hard job, he shouldn't have run. This is the tricky issue. The greens in Germany are strong politically so going back to coal is not going to be looked upon favorably. The short term pain of dealing with reducing reliance on Russia for energy will be worth it long term but the path to get there is dicey.

February 25, 20223 yr It's not the time for us to give them crap for this right now but once the dust settles we really need to tell these countries to stop being such bishes and Fing commit.

I'm all for throwing the book at him and doing that now. We have tons of private connections to Estonia, Lativa, Poland, and Finland (family, neighbors, etc.). We are one level removed over here in Sweden but believe me when I tell you we can feel Putin's horrid breath here as well.

February 25, 20223 yr I feel like Germany of all countries (with the inherited shame that they carry for the atrocities of ww2), should be the first country doing all that they can to stop this. It’s a chance for atonement.
