His power grasp is iron tight but even despots have their limits when thousands of young bodies come back in such a short time frame. If capturing Kyiv were his only goal then fine but far from it. he wants to hold all of Ukraine indefinitely, he wants Poland too if he's actually going to restore Russia its former glory. That kind of land grab requires some easy wins early, get the base excited and feeling invulnerable, scare your future opponents, don't dip too hard into your resources etc. This is a brutally bad foot to get off on.
