This is odd because Western media made it sound like Ukraine was crushing Russia.

Yeah that's more what I pictured, and what I assume most people would, when hearing "SAM".

It's a mix. As per Google this is an SA-10...

Less mobile and probably an easier target to hit. I'd assume you'd have to be more strategic with these. Constantly moving them and never letting them loiter after turning them on to engage a target.

Oh that's my fault then, i assumed these were SAM batteries the way they were being referred to in contrast to stingers. Yeah technically these are all "SAMs" but I assumed the former when i read the tweet.

And i's not all complex missile defense systems. I'm not an expert by any means on Soviet era weapons systems but I think this is an SA-14 based on what Google is telling me...

And, quite honestly, these are the types of weapons that Ukrainians would get the most fighting effectiveness out of. Things that can be operated by a one or two people, are highly mobile, and are inexpensive/easily replenished.

Not familiar with those particular Soviet ones, but most modern SAMs are relatively quick to lock and then fire-and-forget. Starting and driving them might even be more difficult than targeting. No clue on maintenance and reloading.

Ammunition is needed I'd think, but they would presumably provide that with the launchers.

One of the reasons we've been reticent to send some weaponry is that Ukrainians aren't trained on the use of them. So they've been trying to support ways to provide Ukrainians with weapons they're ready to deploy now.

The machines they're sending are Soviet era machines from that report, which Ukrainians I would guess are familiar with.

To be sure, this is all just my speculation. I'm not trying to misrepresent myself as knowledgeable, just what I'm picking up from this conflict.

Sure feels like a 27 pt underdog is winding down the 3rd qtr and still in this.

I keep reading this news snippets but sending is one thing.  Successfully delivering into the hands of soldiers who can use them is another.  And so is maintenance and ammunition.  I'm no war scholar, but isn't this a pretty basic worry?

SA-8 is vehicle mounted, but is for low altitude threats. SA-10 and 12 are on the same vehicle platform (S-300), it’s just that the 12 is designed for anti-ballistic missile defense, and its tracked instead of wheeled.  SA-14 is a manpad. And at this point it’s just throwing a lawn dart at the moon.

Not if Russia doesn't hold the skies.

The south was always going to be easier for Russia. My understanding is that the troops out of Crimea were much more professional than those used in the north, and the terrain is much harder to defend. I don't think Ukraine intended to waste a lot of resources trying to stop advances considering how open it is, they hunkered down in cities. Nonetheless, the stand in Kharkiv I think has really upended Russia's expectations of a quicker war, as it would have been much easier to advance on Kyiv from the south.

The north has a lot of marshes and wetlands. The timing of the invasion and that it's been delayed is much to the advantage of Ukraine. The cold snap actually probably helped Russia as it kept some areas that would have been really muddy frozen, even though they then have to deal with those elements.

Again, I'm very much a layman at this. But this is what I'm picking up. YMMV.

Starting to get the impression that Putin's compliance with Xi's alleged request to hold off on this until after the Olympics has backfired in a major way.

Twitter really is a cesspool. I made the mistake of going on there the other day for posts about the war in Ukraine. Your stuff is tame compared to the raw sewage I found there.

The revisionism is underway. It's going to be a tall task. All the BS parroted here will be impossible to spin.

Russia accomplishing every single stated goal will be a clear defeat for Putin.

dude, the west expected Russia to roll Ukraine in a few days.

you cannot spin this into any sort of "accomplishing every stated goal". it's an embarrassment for Russia even if they win (which they probably still will, depending on how you define "win").

go back to Russia. seriously.

Isn't this more a function of them meeting differing levels of resistance? Presumably because northern and western cities like Kiev having easier access to supply routes compared to those southern/eastern cities?

Keep in mind a huge chunk of Ukraine’s military was where they were making gains in the south. Like a sizable chunk.

They delayed the invasion to help China get the focus for an Olympics that no one watched, only for them to get shafted by the mud, for them to have China not give them help. Genius move. They should have invaded two weeks before they did, and if they had done so it’d be a different story.

The troops coming out of Crimea aren’t so much better as they are not led by morons.

Actually, the reporter (Hall I believe is his name) that was also injured in the attack, is a good reporter with dual US/UK citizenship.  He actually took that other dope Gutfeld to task on a Fox news segment.  So, I think this woman posting this tweet is indeed disgusting.

Yeah, she's gross, but only because that dude disagreed with Gutfeld.

Lead spinster right here.

Did Russia expect to "roll Ukraine" in a few days? Their stated goals clearly involved employing tactics which would be impossible to execute in a few days.

Because you refused to accept Russia at it's word, and instead engaged in your own media fantasies, the reality on the ground shows what a fool you are.

A lot of people are dead because the U.S. pushed a weaker nation into a war they knew they could not win. This is a f'ing disgrace.

Right. I've been trying to Monday morning QB Russia's plans, since the start of the invasion didn't go as I expected. I figured Russia would move more deliberately; secure the south from Crimea, and the Donbass, before advancing on Kyiv. A long, drawn out advance. Instead it seems Russia went right for the knockout. I don't think they expected so much resistance in the south and east. Russia has been unable to set up the siege around Kyiv. Therefore they've moved right to Plan B; bomb them into submission.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invoked the worst attacks on U.S. soil during his speech to Congress on Wednesday, pleading for more military assistance to fight back against Russia’s invasion.

"We need you right now [to] remember Pearl Harbor, the terrible morning, December 7, 1941, when your sky was black from the planes attacking you. Just remember, remember September the 11th, a terrible day in 2001, when evil try to turn your cities, independent territories into battlefields, when innocent people were attacked,” Zelensky said. "Just like no one else expected it you could not stop it. Our country experience the same every day right now.”

Zelensky went on to ask for the U.S. to implement a no-fly zone over Ukraine, and to continue providing additional aid to Ukraine as it closes out its third week fending off Russian invaders, which, according to the United Nations, has left nearly 700 civilians dead.

"This is a terror that Europe has not seen for 80 years and we are asking for a reply, for an answer, from the whole world,” Zelensky said in his remarks to Congress. "Is that too much to ask for, a no-fly zone?”

Weird is one in three Americans being willing to risk nuclear destruction over a conflict in Eastern Europe. That's weird to me.

Meh, read the thread. With the Ukraine prop being shared in here it sounded like Russia was going to be sent packing any moment. Instead, Ukraine is literally begging Biden to start WW3 on its behalf.
