Dmitry Medvedev, who was president from 2008 to 2012 and is now deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, said the United States had conspired to destroy Russia as part of an "primitive game" since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.

Medvedev was Putin's puppet President. He's just repeating the company line. All of this is easy to say, but actually carrying it out is a completely different ballgame. Absolutely no chance he drops a nuke over Ukraine.

I'm not saying it's likely, but declarations like this seem senseless to me. There's no way to really know just how crazy Putin and his acolytes are, but the experts aren't so confident, and if the Russians really believe in the prospect of a limited nuclear engagement, then this is definitely on the table. I'm not particularly superstitious, but I'm not messing around with this jinx. Anything is possible. Generally speaking, it's really only a matter of time before nuclear technology gets into the hands of a true madman who will use it. It's pretty much inevitable. I just hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime.

It's just not gonna happen unless his life and grip on control is threatened. And not the foreign policy brinksmanship, "I'm threatened by NATO being too close" way, but actually threatened, as in tanks are rolling into Russia, but that's not gonna happen. The chicken littles and Russian apologists can scream all they want about it being "Russia's policy to drop nukes", but Putin's just a man. His goal is to maintain power, not kill himself and everyone he's ever known.

I just hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime. Sure, but it's not going to be used by a head of state that's not under direct threat. It's just doesn't make any sense from a risk/reward. As in, it's all risk and no reward. Now if Russian's are storming the gates of the Kremlin then just hope for the best, but that could happen no matter what we do in Ukraine. But our presence in Ukraine isn't going to result in him dropping the bomb. No chance. Their continued threats are just their way of deterring us from entering, because Russia knows all they have is the threat of nuclear annihilation. Their military is weak, the whole world's against them (other than a large portion of the Republican Party), their economy is F'd and Europe is even showing that they can explore other avenues for oil. The only card they have is the fear of their nuclear arsenal.
