He only talked about Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He never talked about what happened in Vietnam. He took it to the grave some 30+ years later. A couple Vietnam Vets I never met before in my life came to his funeral, but I am not even sure they deployed with him.

Like I already said the Allies plan was to invade along the French coast. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t any fighting in Italy or other parts of Europe. That being said the Soviet Union did the majority of the fighting and dying among the Allies.

If I'm remembering my WWII history correctly, sometime after their successes in Africa, the US started pushing the British to cooperate with them on an invasion plan in France. Churchill actively resisted it because he thought it would be a bloodbath and ultimately fail. He forced the Allied push into the Italian theater. The US went along with it despite the objections from the US generals. Italy turned into a huge quagmire with British and American forces operating independent of each other after some really embarrassing battles with the Germans along the Gustav Line, the US finally convinced Churchill to go along with the invasion plan in France. There was one glory hound US field commander who went rogue and disobeyed orders and went straight on to Rome instead of cutting off a retreating German army which probably would have saved a lot of time and Allied lives in Italy. It was really bad.

As I said, this is an endless debate on which battle meant more..,.....and boiling it down to how many were killed or what the original plans were is belittling it to just numbers. There were @ 75 million people killed.....Military and civilian in WW2. . My Dad and my 4 Uncles were in that war in multiple theaters and 2 of them told about the sh-- they went thru and I just get a little critical of when these things are boiled down to "rankings". I get what you were trying to say....I'm just a bit more sensitive to those comments.
